how are they gonna adequately prepare whatever child they cast for nico di angelo. it has got to be impossible for someone that young to give informed consent about playing the saddest wettest loser in all of human history. like hey kid i know youre sprightly and all of ten, but we need you to be in all five stages of grief at all times. remember, your mother was killed in fascist italy, youre eighty years old, and now youre in love with the guy who killed your sister. say this next line like you know what it's like to be an ear of corn.

I know it won’t actually make any difference but they actually could age him up to eleven in the show considering Nico gains a whole ass year in nine months in the books (granted it was in HoO but still). Again, won’t really make a difference but hey, there are some insanely talented kids out there. Here’s hoping one of them is around the right age in two years.

Hello!! Thank you so much for your inside about Japanese language, it's so interesting and useful!! I'm no good with the language but I was curious to know how they call the Earth flames in japanese! I know the sky ones from how they pronounce them in the anime but I was curious to know the japanese sounds of the earth flames! Thank you so much!!

Avatar

Thank you for your request! I'm so glad you enjoyed my post.

First of all, it's called "earth" in English, but in Japanese it's used to refer to the surface, land, or ground of the earth. There doesn't seem to be a corresponding word in English. They are the words "大地/だいち (Daichi)," and it's used in contrast to "sky".

Let me explains how they were expressed in Japanese! From left to right, kanji, hiragana(kanji's readings), and pronunciations are listed in this order.

Enma
  • 大地/だいち (Daichi)

In his case, although there is no official explanation, but it's called "Daichi" because he is the boss. And It's also called "重力/じゅうりょく (Juryoku)" because of its nature. It means gravity.

Adel
  • 氷河/ひょうが (Hyouga)

It means glacier. The nature is called "凍結/とうけつ (touketsu : freeze)".

Kouyou
  • 森/もり (Mori)

It means forest. 🌳

SHITT・P!
  • 沼/ぬま (Numa)

It means swamp/marsh/bog. (In Japanese these can be referred to collectively by "Numa".) The nature is called 発酵/はっこう (Hakkou : fermentation). In her self-introduction, she introduced her special skill as "Hakkou". Since it is pronounced the same as the Japanese words for "eight" and "luminescence," so classmates took it in a variety of ways. (Btw, Gokudera drew the correct answer.)

Rauji
  • 山/やま (Yama)

It means mountain. 🗻

Julie
  • 砂漠/さばく (Sabaku)

It means desert. 🏜

As we can be seen from these, the motifs are phenomena that occur in nature. Therefore, it corresponds well with the weather. And only those nature are described that are evident in cannon. Also, it's not clear what Kaoru's ability are. It must to painful to be attacked by drills.

I hope these will be of some help to you!

thank you so much for this!! It’s sad we have an unnamed flame among the Earth flames though... I have another curiosity! I (and my friends) spent a lot of time trying to figure out the name of Simon Cozzato (what was the name and surname) but we figured that it’s a full name with no surname? The author did the same with Superbi Squalo that’s a whole name too. Is it correct? So he can be called either Simon or Cozzato, or the full name? (We referenced to the chapter when Cozzato introduced himself to Giotto and Giotto said he knew about the “Simons” ?) Also, as an italian I need to point out how cute Amano-sensei created the two families being Vongola (Clams) and Cozza (Mussels) and the second one became a name (Cozzato, but it’s not a real italian name!). Coming from south Italy (Naples) we literally live with clams and mussels !!

It was my pleasure! And I love that shellfish fact so much.🌊

Well, wow. In Japanese, Giotto said he knows "Cozzato". Also his descendants Enma's lastname, "Kozato," is pronounced very similarly. So, I have always thought of Simmon as a first name and Cozaato as a last name.

And the information that Superbi Squalo is full name is his full name may not be due to Mx.Amano. That is maybe in-game information for derivative products.

I think a reader asked that question(Is Squalo full name? ) in the bonus section of the book. But the question was not answered, just talk about illustrations. (This is a common occurrence. Perhaps it is a manifestation of Mx.Amano's obsessive nature to characters) Or I have also seen a theory by reader that Superbi is a middle name.

Mx.Amano's love and commitment to their characters is very strong. So, little information has been revealed in cannon.

New information may be added through animations or games etc. But mostly Mx.Amano would not intervene. Therefore, it often depends on the person whether they takes that information as official or not. They really care about their characters. For this reason, many people don't believe in sources other than Mx.Amano, even if it's official. Only Mx.Amano can make use of unique characters as they are, without business.

They are too much of a mystery🌫

Heyo! Just noticed something that I'm intrigued by--you refer to Akira Amano with very gender neutral pronouns and titles. In the west we are under the impression that Akira Amano is a woman due to their Wikipedia article.

Has information regarding their gender identity changed in the past ten years? Or was the western fandom simply mistaken?

Hi! Thank you for asking!

It was a surprise to me that Mx.Amano's gender was identified when I saw the Western fandom for the first time. But, I could not find the source of this information/photo.

Or there is no mention of their gender or a photo of them on the Japanese Wikipedia. And in Japanese, there is no need to refer specifically of gender. Like, she/he. So their gender is much less discussed in Japan. Many fans call them "Amano-sensei". This is a gender-specific honorific title at all.

They are also rarely seen on the public stage, even sentences about themselves. And we can see their comments in their comics, and their writing is extremely neutral. They don't even use the first person. The content is often seasonal or everyday life things, and they rarely talk about themselves. (Their writing is always very bright, gentle and soft. They love cats😺)

So, for me, I think no need to identify it until it was directly mentioned by Mx.Amano. At least, it's not for me to refer about them unless they break that consciously neutral stance. Whatever their gender identity is, if they don't want it, I don't need to know.

Fascinating! I didn't know that at all. It's very possible, even, that the entire western fandom was misled by a possible fake picture. Who knows?

Thank you so much for your reply, I'll use gender neutral pronouns for Amano-sensei from now on.

I actually looked this up in recent months and while I can’t remembering where, I did read that that photo we all know of Amano was, in fact, a stock image. I also don’t know how it came to be that the Western fandom believed them to be female, however, there are hypotheticals that can be made. One is that it is usually females that will take on a pseudonym so they can be taken more seriously as a writer and not judged on their gender (though it’s extremely common for ANY mangaka to keep their identities a secret). The other is from the sheer amount of female fan service in the series. It’s clearly drawn with focusing on “hot boys” in mind, despite being a shounen. This, of course, is still no real indication but could have been part of the reason why it was assumed.

i.e. why when you or someone else gets stabbed or impaled, you should leave the object in the wound until medical help arrives.

THIS. RIGHT HERE. This is an amazing example!!

If you take the thing out, they’re going to bleed a lot more.

SO. DONT.

News Flash from the Medical Help ™ — we don’t touch it either! Unless the object they’re impaled with is literally too big to fit in the ambulance, We. Don’t. Touch. The. Thing.

The only people qualified to Take-The-Thing-Out are surgeons. End of story.

Okay, but for the love of God, please, PLEASE, if you did, if you panicked and took the thing out…. DON’T…. PUT IT BACK IN.

Or else, congratulations, you just stabbed them AGAIN. I reeeeeally shouldn’t have to say this guys, but I do.

one screw to make, one screw up to take

there’s actually a reason for this.

human infants are waaaaay underdeveloped at birth compared to many other mammal species.

in fact, humans should actually have a gestation period of almost two years.

that would mean that the kid comes out ready to walk and talk and a lot less delicate.

the only reason why we don’t gestate that long is because the human birthing process is really fucked up. our hips are too narrow to birth anything larger than a 9 month gestated baby. the head simply won’t fit after that.

it happened after we learned to walk upright. our brains got bigger but our ability to birth things became a lot more complicated.

this is why growing children in artificial uterus is such a cool study happening right now.

we wouldn’t be dependent on a human body to make a kid, which involves a lot of complicated variables.

instead the kid would potentially stay growing in the uterus up to almost two years. then be born nearly fully functional. no more terrors from the fragility of infants.

A Will Solace Character Analysis: the Underappreciated Soft Side

I’ve noticed many fanfictions have Will Solace OOC. So I’ve been thinking about aspects of Will’s personality fans seem to either gloss over or exaggerate. Here, this post is me doing an in-depth analysis explaining Will Solace’s canon personality in the books, and how it can sometimes differ from fanfictions. Sprinkled in this analysis are tips to fanfiction writers on how they write Will as more in-character.

There is one major aspect of Will that people seem to ignore or underemphasize. Nico best explains it when describing Will in this quote

Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiled-up energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as aggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action - the camp’s best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers.

To sum it up, Will Solace is a very chill and calm character. A lot of writers make Will more irrational, impulsive, overbearing, and emotional than he actually is. Will is not the type of character to create drama unless he’s, as Nico puts it, “under fire.” In other words, the intense side of his personality doesn’t come out unless the situation is urgent or dire.

Fans remember during the Second Giant War how he gets angry and argues with Nico over Nico’s health and shadow-traveling, so many assume Will is going to be this fiery over a lot of other things regarding their relationship. For example, fanfic writers may make Will controlling or overly sensitive with Nico. However, keep in mind, Will gets heated with Nico during the Second Giant War because Nico’s shadow-traveling is killing him. This is how Will describes Nico’s dire state.

“Coach Hedge told me all about your shadow-travel. You can’t try that again.”
“I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not. I’m a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, you’d be in no shape to fight. But you wouldn’t make it. One more slip, and you won’t come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctor’s orders.”

Will is a healer. When he touches Nico’s hand, he can sense how little sleep and food Nico has been getting and how Nico’s being taken over by darkness. Nico is on the verge of death and hasn’t cared about his health for a long time. Nico is also stubborn about it, so Will has to be aggressive in order to save Nico’s life. This aggressive behavior is not the norm for Will, but it can sometimes come out when he has to assert control in a life-or-death situation.

Will is a calming prescence. He’s a diplomat. He stops violence on multiple occassions.

He’s one of the few people who’s able to calm Clarisse’s violent rage, and he does so in a gentle manner.

Clarisse pointed her dagger at Rachel. “What about their allies, huh? Did you see that tribe of two-headed men that arrived yesterday? Or the glowing red dog-headed guys with the big poleaxes? They look pretty barbaric to me. It would’ve been nice if you’d foreseen any of that, if your Oracle power didn’t break down when we needed it most!”
Rachel’s face turned as red as her hair. “That’s hardly my fault. Something is wrong with Apollo’s gifts of prophecy. If I knew how to fix it –”
“She’s right.” Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse’s wrist. Not many campers could’ve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people’s anger. He got her to lower her dagger. “Everyone in our cabin has been affected. It’s not just Rachel.”

One of the most underrated Will Solace moments is when he stops a bloody battle from happening between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.

But he knew it wouldn’t do any good. After weeks of waiting, agonizing and steaming, the Greeks and Romans wanted blood. Trying to stop the battle now would be like trying to push back a flood after the dam broke.
Will Solace saved the day.
He put his fingers in his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering.
“DON’T BE STUPID!” Will yelled. “LOOK!”

People are so used to seeing demigods, especially male demigods, being aggressive fighters that they can’t wrap their heads around a brave and strong demigod who actively tries to avoid unnecessary conflict and destruction as much as he can.

And that’s Will Solace’s strength: he has the ability to prevent as much harm as possible.

Will is a difficult character to write. There’s a lot of dueling factors with his personality. He’s calm and pacifying while also being brave and assertive. He’s fun and lighthearted while also being intelligent, logical, and grounded. He’s laidback while also being responsible and hardworking. He’s insecure but not melodramatic. He’s very caring and protective but not pushy.

Will’s personality confuses Nico sometimes too.

He’d always thought of Will as easygoing and laid back. Apparently he could also be stubborn and aggravating.

The trick to writing Will is to keep in mind his default personality is a soft and lighthearted character. Writers tend to overemphasize the hard side of his personality when his default personality is actually the soft side.

Think of the relaxing, lanky cat metaphor Nico uses for him. He and Nico bicker often, and it works for Will because he rolls with everything and doesn’t take things too seriously. He’s able to alleviate Nico’s moodiness with humor, wittiness, groundedness, and patience. Nico affectionately calls Will a “dork” because Will usually keeps things light. Interestingly enough, he’s able to be lighthearted without coming across as insensitive or an airheaded goofball, the latter of which is something Nico dislikes about Percy’s personality. On a related sidenote, another way writers make Will OOC is they make him too dumb or too immature. I know I mentioned to focus on Will’s soft side, but be careful to avoid that too. He’s a SENSIBLE, lanky cat.

The way Will keeps his composure during a stressful situation by using laughter while still being mature is expressed well in this exchange with Apollo. (Yes, Will has a lot to manage.)

It was difficult to think of this young man as my son. He was so poised, so unassuming, so free of acne. He also didn’t appear to be awestruck in my presence. In fact, the corner of his mouth had started twitching.
“Are—are you amused?” I demanded.
Will shrugged. “Well, it’s either find this funny or freak out. My dad, the god Apollo, is a fifteen-year-old—”
“Sixteen,” I corrected. “Let’s go with sixteen.”
“A sixteen-year-old mortal, lying in a cot in my cabin, and with all my healing arts—which I got from you—I still can’t figure out how to fix you.”
“There is no fixing this,” I said miserably. “I am cast out of Olympus. My fate is tied to a girl named Meg. It could not be worse!”
Will laughed, which I thought took a great deal of gall. “Meg seems cool. She’s already poked Connor Stoll in the eyes and kicked Sherman Yang in the crotch.”

The fiercer side of Will’s personality comes out only when the situation calls for it; this happens sometimes when he has to be a caring family member, a responsible healer, or a warrior in a dire situation. Even when he gets more forceful, he doesn’t get more forceful than he has to.

Since Will has such a balanced and lighthearted personality, what are his flaws? What are the dark sides of his personality? There are four main things that stick out.

1. He’s insecure about his self-perceived lack of abilities.

“I agree,” Will said. “I wish I was a better archer … I wouldn’t mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my father’s gifts to stop this war.” He looked down at his own hands with distaste. “Unfortunately, I’m just a healer.”

2. He sometimes struggles to endure the heavy responsibilities he has as a healer and as a protector to his family.

“I got it reattached,” Will told me, his voice shaky with exhaustion. His scrubs were speckled with blood. “I need somebody to keep him stable.”
I pointed to the woods. “But—”
“I know!” Will snapped. “Don’t you think I want to be out there searching too? We’re shorthanded for healers. There’s some salve and nectar in that pack. Go!”
I was stunned by his tone. I realized he was just as concerned about Kayla and Austin as I was. The only difference: Will knew his duty. He had to heal the injured first. And he needed my help.

3. He forces himself to bottle his emotions to keep his composure.

Will laughed under his breath. “I’m terrified. But one thing you learn as head counselor: you have to keep it together for everyone else. Let’s get you on your feet.“

Here’s a second example.

I rested my hand on Will’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back by dawn.”
His mouth trembled ever so slightly. “How can you be sure?”

4. He constantly worries about his loved ones.

Nico rested his hand on Will’s shoulder. “Apollo, we were worried. Will was especially.”

In conclusion, Will Solace’s personality is difficult to get correct. But don’t worry, if you write Will as a laidback, witty cat in your fanfics, I guarantee he’ll be more in-character than many other fanfics with Will Solace.

(Note: I am only human. If you believe I’m misinterpreting some aspects of Will’s personality, feel free to express it. What I say isn’t 100 percent the right interpretation.)

Was a bit worried at the start but it seems I’ve just somehow manage to avoid most typically ooc fics (as the ones I’ve read didn’t feel that ooc to me). The only thing I do tend to see and would like to extend with your post is his overbearingness, and by that I mean, people tend to write him being constantly serious about Nico’s shadow-traveling when that is not the case (as you said, he is more often carefree).

He doesn’t mind Nico shadow traveling or using his abilities as long as he doesn’t nearly kill himself like he did in BOO. For example, in THO, Nico didn’t hesitate to take Will with him to shadow travel and grab the chariot. And right after Will wasn’t that concerned, mearly picked him and got him a drink, knowning he would be fine soon. Same with ToN, which at that point, Will seems to be completely used to Nico passing out often, having chocolate and a pillow ready for him.

He knows it’s unavoidable, so instead of trying to stop him (unless it gets really serious) he simply tries to be there for him and protect him when he is vulnerable and I think that is even sweeter than him constantly frowning on Nico using his abilities even a little.

People out here theorizing that Yuu and Mika are related bc of recent chapters need to remember that Kagami had literally planned to make them ACTUAL brothers before tossing the idea aside in order to focus on nonrelated family relationships. So why in the world would he decide to change that now of all times?

Small Potatoes?

I DID IT GUYS I CRACKED THE CODE

I was scrolling through my dash and came across this post of Russian proverbs and guess what? The “small potatoes” line, as per ANY INTERACTION EVER with Akiren and Goro, DOES have a double interpreted meaning, hence the source of the idiom.

Specifically, I’d like to point out this proverb:

Любовь не картошка, не выбросишь в окошко. LOVE IS NOT A POTATO YOU CANNOT THROW IT OUT A WINDOW (that is, love is not a small thing that is easy to get rid of)

Which brings me to this reblog:

For about TWENTY YEARS I have been wondering why, in the English-translated Chekhov play I read because it was on the summer reading list for my AP English class, someone says with no particularly enlightening context, “Death is not a potato.”
BUT THAT’S WHY, ISN’T IT. HE’S REFERENCING THAT PROVERB. LOVE IS NOT A POTATO; DEATH IS NOT A POTATO.

And boom. Both contexts give Akiren’s line of “this isn’t small potatoes” so much more depth and meaning. Love is not a potato; death is not a potato. This isn’t small potatoes.

The feelings Akiren carries for Goro aren’t potatoes. It’s more than just the typical meaning the idiom carries. (The idiom itself specifically refers to something small and inconsequential.) But looking at the origin, it’s so much more than just that.

What Akiren is really trying to say here is not that “Goro’s life isn’t inconsequential”. Take into account the original proverb: Love isn’t a potato. What he’s trying to say is that his feelingsno, his love for Goro is not inconsequential, that it’s not something he can just let go of that easily. When he says “This isn’t small potatoes” he isn’t only referring to having to fight Maruki. He’s referring to the entire situation, which is the reason he’s so vague about what “this” refers to.

It’s a love confession wrapped up neatly in an idiom borne from a proverb.

Now, take Chekhov’s play’s line into account: Death is not a potato. It references the original proverb, and is equally applicable to this in context, and comes back to not being able to let go easily. Akiren would not be able to let go of Goro.

And, if you do choose to do the right thing and fight Maruki, Akiren doesn’t let go. Up until the day he leaves Tokyo, Goro’s glove remains in his pocket, and on his last day there, he solidifies his promise within his heart again, and reminds himself that he has yet to keep it.

These two are so used to speaking in proverbs and idioms and double entendres and quotes, it’s practically a language.

You should get into gymnastics. You must be pretty flexible to stretch like that.

Royal already gave us a gymnast and that isn’t me lol

Okay, on a more serious note, though, you really don’t need to take the post that seriously. I am fully aware that this wasn’t meant to be the canon interpretation of this line, and that it was, more likely than not, a coincidence.

I’m not pointing out something “written in canon”, I’m explaining my interpretation of a line, as any high school lit. student would do in class, where drawing connections between seemingly unrelated things is fair analysis. It’s just my interpretation and understanding, a connection I made, and if you don’t agree with it, no one can hold anything against you for it. No one is forcing you to read or accept this—you’re free to have your opinion, and I am with mine.

But immediately trying to invalidate it because it’s a stretch isn’t cool. It wasn’t meant to be something that I state is canon because I do not work for or with Atlus. I reiterate that it is really just an interpretation I have and a connection I drew.

I think this sums up my intention pretty well:

You see, I am a writer first and foremost, so this sort of overanalysis is second nature for me.

I’m a writer, too, and I’m well aware of the fact that speculation is a part of storytelling and analysis.

However, you’ll forgive my confusion because at no point in your original post did you disclaim your theory as being your interpretation. To the random reader, such as me, it genuinely appeared that you were making a declaration that you had cracked a code revealing the hidden gay agenda between Akechi and Ren/Akira.

I have to agree with thefighter23. Like, I’m a straight up shuake and goro fan and while I like the interpretation, if Atlus West really wanted to portray that they could have just...stuck with the original translation? It was blunt and it had meaning, and no one could argue it. This...well, it’s a meme now. And while after a while, we may dig a little deeper into the interpretation, we’re still gonna get stuck with those ppl saying “we’re reaching”. It was just an unnecessary step in my opinion. That said, again, your interpretation was very poetic, but you did make it sound as if you were stating a fact, and thus, that response reared its ugly head.
