The amount of times I’ve felt scared to be who I am in public. The amount of times I wondered if the law would justify my right to love as others do. The amount of times I had to fight for my voice to be heard over a man’s. The amount of times I was told to “know my place”. The amount of times I walked home at night with my keys between my fingers or had derogatory words thrown at me in the middle of the street. The amount of times I was told my ideas don’t matter because I’m just a high school kid, just a college kid. The amount of times I saw outright racism in my own community. The amount of times I doubted whether it was worth it to speak up.
I will never stop being grateful for Taylor for using her platform to advocate for what is right through political activism, to encourage young people to find their voice and express it, to show people what is at stake during our elections. And I have so much respect for her. Despite all she has faced, she has the courage to do what is right.
