To get the ball on the next instalment of Greece's bailout rolling, Athens yesterday welcomed a bunch of European Union finance ministers. Although Greek police barred demonstrators from certain parts of the capital – including Syntagma Square which has been the centre of recent anti-austerity mayhem – private sector union GSEE and its public sector counterpart ADEDY still gathered in the Propilaia area on Tuesday evening. Workers Militant Front PAME did the same in Omonoia square...

A football supporter died in Helsingborg on Sunday following an assault on his way to the opening game of the 2014 Allsvenskan football season. It's been around 12 years since Swedish firm member Tony Deogan was beaten to death in Stockholm in connection with a football game between AIK and IFK Göteborg. (A firm member is a kind of Danny Dyer in Football Factory.) About a year later, the investigation was discontinued due to witnesses refusing to testify. The case gained huge press in Sweden. Not only because it was the first time in the history of Swedish football that someone had died. It was also revealed that the prosecutors had lost documents regarding the case and as a result, the entire thing turned into a never-ending blame game.... Read more at VICE

By Sophie D. Gilden , photos by Bruce Gilden

Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden – who also happens to be my husband – has photographed the Yakuza in Japan, traipsed through the slums of Haiti too many times to count and stalked the streets of New York City for decades shooting the strange faces floating by. But it was a recent visit to the Wisconsin State Fair that produced his most exotic work to date.

For 11 days in August, a total of 1,012,552 visitors passed through the turnstiles at State Fair Park in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee. They came for deep-fried cookie-dough fondue on a stick, deep-fried peanut butter and jelly on a stick, deep-fried s’mores on a stick, deep-fried Milky Way bars on a stick, deep-fried cream cheese on a stick (with bacon), deep-fried fat Elvises on a stick. They came for cream puffs, cheese curds, 18-inch corn dogs, barbecued turkey legs the size of children’s thighs, beer-battered deep-fried bacon-wrapped cheddar hot dogs, beer-battered macaroni-and-cheese bites with Jack cheese and bacon. Of course, they also came for the local brews: Miller Lite, Miller Genuine Draft, Miller64, Leinenkugel “craft” beer (owned and operated by MillerCoors LLC). Once Bruce had digested his trip, I asked him a few questions.....

Belle de Neige (“Beautiful Snow”, if you didn’t study French) is a blog about what people who work ski seasons get up to when they’re not fixing snow blades, or delivery apres-ski drinks to Jemima Khan and whoever else goes on ski holidays. The writer just condensed a bunch of her blog posts into a book, so we asked her to condense her book back into a blog post. This is that.

I’ve been blogging about all the unpalatable shit people get up to on ski seasons for five years. And I’d say I’ve covered all the major bases: sex, ill-advised drug consumption, orgies, avalanches, immoral workplace behaviour, rich delinquents, Russian prostitutes – everything you'd expect when you mix young people with high altitudes. So wrapping that all up into one snappy article should be easy, right? All I need to do is reel off a few anecdotes involving undignified sexual encounters as a result of British teens exporting British drinking culture, and I’m sorted.

But the problem is that I don’t want to start out like that, because perpetuating boring, bullshit myths is boring. And because not everyone behind the scenes of Europe’s ski resorts are Harrovian drop-outs or braying packs of Hollister homeboys. In fact, many “seasonaires” – the word for people who work ski seaons up in the mountains – aren’t like that at all. Many of those who I know are labourers, or lost their jobs in the recession, or come from Wales....
