also some plants can see. as it turns out. Shouldn't be surprising because they are literally covered in light sensitive cells that direct them toward sunlight, but, yeah, some of them have versions of those cells that can see in some fashion or another.

we found this out fairly recently (last 3 or 4 years) because the plant boquila trifoliolata can grow its leaves different shapes to mimmic the plants around it and we thought maybe they did it by touch or something so we did an experiment with no touching and ruled that out, and then we thought maybe it was some kind of pheromone thing or something but in another experiment it copied the leaf shape of a plastic plant, so

anyway plants can see. some only enough to tell where the sunlight is strongest, others... more than that.

Yeah Boquila trifoliolata is the mimic octopus of the plant world.

Examples of Boquila trifoliolata mimicking the leaves of other plants. Yellow arrows point to leaves of Boquila trifoliolata that are mimicking other species in A-G. Image H shows what Boquila trifoliolata leaves look like when they’re not mimicking other plants. Ernesto Gianoli/Trends in Plant Science

Also it's not just reacting to plant pheremones or something like that... it will mimic plastic plants.

HELLO whoever at buzzfeed made him read a lesbian-on-gay thirst tweet you are my idol

sorry not tweet, tumblr post. this website is the only platform that could produce something so good and pure it actually makes Andrew Scott smile and participate in the joke rather than sigh with his entire soul

If only there were some sort of facility where teenagers could be taught new skills.

Anyway, here's a helpful diagram. When I was hit on the temple this was one of the harder things I had to reteach myself. Don't be shamed into not asking questions, and it's alright if it takes you a while to figure it out. Don't let someone make you feel bad for learning new things, or relearning old ones.

Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to teach yourself. YouTube is a valid option.

yeah okay ill reblog that :]

Some things to add: Big hand measures minutes, it's longer because minutes have to be more precise. You can tell the short hand is somewhere between two and three and go "ah it's somewhere between two and three o'clock" but seeing the exact minute would be a lot trickier if you had to rely on a short hand.

Some people also call "quarter to" as either "quarter til" or "quarter of." It's the same thing, just a local variation.

this isn’t helpful

(This is a joke. I know how to read my watch. This is in fact very helpful, I am making fun of my own watch being hard to read.)

Sir or ma’am or distinguished citizen, what the FUCK is that watch.

This is the crossover black mesh, from projects watchs. It’s not very hard to read, but it’s not the most precise. The yellow hand counts seconds, the white minutes, and the gray hours. I have it set so the thin end points to what time it is, but you could set it so it uses the thick end, or a mix of both if you want to be evil.

I literally do not understand how that can work without the hands being centered. I’m not being facetious, I literally do not know how those hands would MOVE without floating around the face of the watch pointing at fuckall.

As someone who regularly has difficulty with misreading analogue clocks because numbers are fucking stupid and my brain doesn't read them right

I just want to say

Friend - somehow your watch is even worse for not having numbers and I don't understand how that is possible

You know–as a person with tattoos–I was fully prepared to point and laugh at this lady.

The thing is…if you read the whole way through, she knows she’s being absurd. She admits she’s being biased, classist, and (using her son’s word) prejudiced. She knows that. And at the very end, she comes to the conclusion that it may not be the tattoo that has her so bothered. It’s the fact that her son is grown, and she has no say anymore in how he treats his body.

I’m honestly kind of surprised she shared this? She knows so well that she’s in the wrong here, but her feelings are her feelings and just knowing that she’s wrong doesn’t lessen their strength.

This feels very human. And vulnerable, in a way. Again, I have tattoos–I would have been so, so hurt if my mother had looked at me like this when I got mine. I think that’s the one piece I’m missing from this article. She reflects on how illogical she’s being, dismantles her prejudices–names them as such–and finds in the end the real core of her hurt.

But she never reflects on how her words, her attitude must hurt her son.

I think that’s the real crime here. Her feelings are valid–not justified; never that–but by wallowing in them, she’s letting her own biases put a wedge between her and her son. That’s the tragedy here. She seems like a woman prone to introspection. I hope she makes the next logical leap and realizes how badly she’s hurting him.

You know, I *know* that my mum didn't write this article. She never, ever would. (And despite being out to her for literal years at this point, she'd never refer to me as her son *now*, let alone before I actually came out to her.)

But every time I see it, part of me thinks 'maybe she did'. Cause this was her reaction. I told her I was going to do it a week before the appointment and she spent that entire week in tears, as if I'd given her advance warning of my impending suicide.

I get my media recommendations the old fashioned way: by watching someone I follow on here go on an unhinged reblog spree of media related content until I eventually decide to go "alright, what's all this then"
