my favourite thing ever is looking at notebooks of people who are long gone. it's just, something about seeing their handwriting, seeing a physical and intimate proof that they too existed and had ideas and thoughts and had so much to say and worry about, makes me feel like I am not wasting my time. and if they could go through it and live a life, I can too. to see their minds at work, story ideas, letters, poems, all in their handwriting... head in hands

germany: guys, that’s…none of those are anything like my name…
japan: kon'nichiwa Doitsu
germany: eh close enough

I once asked, and if I remember correctly, apparently the reason for this is because before being unified as Deutschland, it was so many smaller regions that all these other European countries fought over (see 100 years war). Then it finally united as a single nation, but everybody else just kept calling it by a specific region.

sometimes i remember that hebrew was literally a dead language. dead!! for two thousand years!!!! until this one guy in the 1880′s was like hey fuck german and russian and spanish and french We Are Jews we should speak The Language Of The Jews!! and everyone was like dude tf hebrew is DEAD it’s OLD it’s missing too many words, we can’t use it. so he was like ok. i’ll make up new ones. checkmate, atheists and he fuckninh did he stood up by his little desk (?) and invented so many new words and wrote a whole dictionary and then he had a child and only spoke hebrew to him and that child was the first person who’s first language was hebrew in two thousand years and…………………………… i’m sorry i’m so emotional over my man, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. he singe-handedly revived a dead language. what a man

Goyim are not allowed to comment on this actually

My biggest issue with the notes on this post is so many goyim tag it with “fuck n/zis.” Nowhere in the phrase “support Jews” does it mention N/zis. Stop bringing them up. Support the oppressed instead of constantly reminding them of their oppressor. Also, acting like n/zis are the only antisemites is incorrect.

When I say support Jews, I mean support them when your priest is appropriating our culture. I mean when we need help rebuilding cemeteries. I mean when we wear kippot out and are nervous. I mean when we fight to be able to celebrate our holidays. It means learning about us. It means learning what antisemitism is. If your support for Jews only extends as far as “fuck n/zis” then I don’t think you actually support Jews at all. You only care about being able to be angry, or hate, or commit violence in what you see as in a progressive way. That being said, yes, punch n/zis. But also give Jews a hand up, first

Op literally says “punching nazis isn’t enough” and y’all immediately say “punch nazis”.

[ID: A messy colored sketch of Lup. She is a vampire with a bit of blood dripping from her fangs. She is wearing a black v-neck black dress and smiling as she makes a “grrr” motion with her hands. End ID.]

I’m still going to be taking a break throughout November, but I’m taking a break from my break to post something little for day 9 of @taznovembercelebration since I couldn’t resist the vampire prompt. I hope everyone is staying well!

this is it. this is peak meme. do you have any idea the specific culmination of absurd and unlikely events that needed to happen in order for this one single awful sentence to live comfortably, no, effortlessly within the general populace of human comprehension?

it's beautiful. it's hideous. it's everything.

anyways if you date men, fuck men, or form any type of non-platonic partnerships with men, you’re not a lesbian! words mean things. and when i call myself a lesbian this is what i fucking mean.

I don’t know about that. I fuck men to pay the rent, but I’m sure as hell not dating them. I don’t even like them, and I’m sure as shit not attracted to them. And I’m marrying a woman. So I’m pretty sure I’m still a lesbian.

actually yeah this is an important distinction to make that i didn’t consider when i made this post but should have, so i apologize for that!

to further clarify this post: this is only a dismissal of the concept of “bi lesbians” and is not implying that trans women are not women. they are women. it is not criticizing he/him lesbians or nonbinary lesbians, and is absolutely not implying that sex workers cannot be lesbians if they have sex with men as a part of that work.

please rb this version instead

i think goyim didn’t like jojo rabbit because it wasn’t sad and voyeuristic enough. i also think it’s not just that they found silly hitler tonally inconsistent, unfunny, or in poor taste. i think they were uncomfortable with the reminder that hitler WASN’T seen as unquestionably evil by germans. the holocaust narratives favored by white goyim often decenter jewish people and antisemitism and instead put goyim at the center of the narrative – think of the boy in the striped pajamas, where a gentile boy is gassed alongside the jews. white goyim want to think they would suffer in the holocaust. of course, they would be noble and open their attics to trembling, appreciative jews, which put their own lives at risks. but they would do it. of course they would do it. racial distinctions between jew and gentile are erased. but those racial distinctions are drawn VERY sharply in jojo rabbit. jojo doesn’t see hitler as a monster (like any good gentile imagines they would if they were living in the time!). he idolizes him. and elsa isn’t passive. she’s angry. she doesn’t feel the need to be humiliated and make appeals to her humanity to a little nazi child. jojo, as the gentile, and elsa, as the jew, do not act the way the gentile and the jew in holocaust movies are meant to behave. jojo is too compliant. elsa isn’t gracious enough. she spends far too much time going on and on about being jewish and how dare she threaten the nazi son of the sweet gentile woman is allowing her to live! jojo rabbit isn’t an unusual holocaust narrative just because it can be compared to moonrise kingdom. it’s an unusual holocaust narrative because it actively interrogates the psyche of citizens in nazi germany – jojo ADORES hitler and it takes more than meeting a jewish person to undo that. no gentile wants to think that they’d be okay with hitler. his evil is supposed to be nakedly obvious and the holocaust will never happen again because we will know hitler when we see hitler. jojo rabbit isn’t just mocking hitler – it’s mocking germans and it’s mocking gentiles when white gentiles are used to holocaust narratives that center gentile heroism, not gentile failure. even though the movie hits a lot of tropes about gentile heroism (gentile hiding a jew, gentile prosecuted for protecting a jew, gentile-jewish friendship), i think the movie was uncomfortable for a lot of gentile in ways they don’t really understand that are thus reduced to a criticism of the movie being totally inconsistent. yeah, there are jarring tone changes in the movie. they’re SUPPOSED to be jarring. when you’re a member of the majority race/ideology under fascism, your life may be pretty good! there might be moments of horror (like the people jojo witnesses hanging near the beginning of the movie), but you can ignore that if you wish. and people don’t want to think about that! and as for elsa, jewish pain during the holocaust is so fetishized. taika waititi allows his jewish wwii-era protagonist more than fear and suffering, he lets her feel joy and anger and teenage angst. she’s fully human. the tonal shifts in jojo rabbit allow the film both to delve into the psyche of german citizens during nazi germany and defy typical voyeuristic holocaust narratives about jewish pain.

This is probably true, but can we all just take a minute to appreciate that the antisemitic comment about circumcision on a holocaust post came from someone with the url “nutsacktorturer”?

Like. You can’t make this shit up.

Don’t Trust Tumblr, Please

So I’ve seen this post floating around a lot, and the pictures in it are immensely powerful. And almost all of them are real.

Almost.

One picture, though, bothered me—not because it looked fake, but because it looked like the moment before a truly horrific tragedy, and I was troubled by the idea that I was looking at something that perhaps only moments later resulted in death. It was this picture:

So I did a quick image search

and found that it was all over pinterest and twitter and such, which are… unhelpful sources at the best of times. But I did see the picture posted on Reddit, which is a cesspool but usually is pretty good about sourcing its shit. And:

Sure enough, when I looked up the trailer, here was that exact moment:

Welp.

But why does this matter? In the dozen or so pictures of that really great post, one of them wasn’t a genuine moment of protest against or confrontation with an oppressive, bigoted authority. That’s not a big deal, right?

Maybe not. But it shows how easy it is to sneak in fake information, misleading information, or just wrong information into posts that are largely accurate. And if you’re scrolling through and think “90% of this is stuff I agree with, the other 10% is probably fine too,” you’re more apt to digest the fake stuff along with the real stuff.

This is particularly important right now, when we’re on the eve of US elections that will quite literally decide our country’s fate for the next fifty years; we cannot, CANNOT trust the things that are reblogged onto our dashboard, even by our good friends (the person who reblogged this onto my timeline is a friend who is imminently trustworthy, for example). We have to be mindful, we have to check sources, we have to consider what we’re looking at.

And that’s not fun! That’s not what tumblr is here for, for most of us; God knows I’d much rather reblog the 1000th gifset of Schitt’s Creek or some shit. But unfortunately, social media isn’t just a place to have fun anymore; it’s been weaponized, quite literally, by people who want us to believe shitty things and are very, very good at sneaking those shitty beliefs into places where we won’t notice them until they’re part of our own ideology.

This isn’t a command that you have to source every single picture or bit of information you reblog; but it is a request that you stop to think. Humans tend to chase the feeling of validation and confirming their own beliefs, and that’s totally understandable. But don’t mistake validation for the truth.
