KH4 First Trailer

This is the first KH4-related translation post I've done (nearly two years late ;lakjsdf my how the time flies), and hopefully there will be many more to come. I'll be focusing on the dialogue and text in the trailer and not so much on the camera angles, character expressions, etc. this time around just because I want to keep the focus on the translations.

Here’s a general key for the kind of analysis I like to do:

JP: Official Japanese Dialogue

EN: Official English Dialogue

TR: My Translation (usually more literal and thus more stilted than the official English version. I’m not using natural-sounding English in order to stick as close to the Japanese versions of the lines as possible for the purpose of analysis)

Notes: things I found interesting, grammatical points, extra thoughts, etc.

One last note: media doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Every work of art must be viewed through the cultural lens of the people who made it. Kingdom Hearts, for all its ties to Disney, is still very much a Japanese game, so it should be analyzed in light of that.

With that in mind, let’s continue.

I wanted to focus on this bit:

because I think this may actually be connected to the tease at the end of KHUx.

(khux finale, translated by goldpanner)

(khux official english translation)

I kinda think most figured after Melody of Memory that this was likely meant to be, as the characters in the game thought 'a world of fiction' or 'a fictional world' or 'unreality/unreal'. But with this I'm now certain it's 'World of Dead/Death' and (for the official English, they decided 'The After World' (i'm sure it'll be stylized like that if it gets an official title/logo in lore, to pair it with The Final World).

I wonder if we're going to find that all of the worlds on the other side are considered part of the World of the Dead (like a realm), or if Quadratum is actually just a part of a much bigger world (and thus not the official name of the world) and not the entire thing (as Radiant Garden, Traverse Town, Twilight Town have been treated). 🤔

Between "fate is unable to be changed and you just have to accept that" and "fate can be changed," which message does KH3 best support overall? Both concepts are "supported" by characters who also contradict themselves: Sora claims a "real leader" needs to accept things are out of his control, after actively rewriting reality via the power of waking, while Xehanort wants control, despite his DDD talk of inevitable fate. Does KH3's story support either more than the other?

I don't really think that's what Sora was trying to express, personally. I don't think he's so much as saying that individual people shouldn't try and resist destiny, but rather that destiny is not (nor should it be) something that can be wielded and controlled like a weapon. That's what Xehanort wants. He wants to be Destiny, to control and decide how every single person lives and what their outcomes are. Like, he's basically going on about how he thinks the only way to save the world is through fascism and dictatorship and Sora is saying that someone with a truly strong heart, a real leader, would not try to dictate the actions of others, and, if there really is a need to save the world like MX suggests, the answer is not in one person deciding everything for everyone.

Especially when you consider how much MX attributes 'fate' to situations he intentionally orchestrated. Throughout the series he's rhetorically used destiny as a weapon, (claiming every awful thing he's ever done was just 'putting them in their proper fated places') and his goal was to literalize that, to have the power to cosmically do that for every single person. To me that scene just is not at all actually about whether or not you should accept bad things happening to you/fate/etc. It was about standing up to fascist ideology through a KH lens.

As for what KH3 supports in general in that way, I think it unequivocally is in support of individuals trying to defy what seems fated, and I don't think there's any real doubt about that. When you open a game saying 'the destruction of everything will happen and there's no changing it' and another character saying 'but what if i can' and then that so-called fate is thwarted, it's kinda hard to see how the game is saying anything else. That isn't even getting into the more character-focused story of just trying to save everyone from their so-called 'fates' at Xehanort's hand, which obviously by succeeding is further saying something to that point.

But honestly, destiny/free will/etc is the least interesting axis on which to view KH3. It is much more a story about moving on after and recovering from trauma through compassion, empathy, and connection with others. Even Sora's more personal story in the game, honestly, has nothing to do with destiny.

Sora didn't know about the prophecy. He was not actively trying to 'change fate and save the world' during the tear in time, he was just trying to save the people he loved when it seemed most hopeless. Like, I don't really think that's actually about capital-d Destiny, I think it's trying to thematically express something more human than that, especially when considering that Sora is a stand-in for the player.

I just wanted to say, I've been avoiding KH spoilers for years because I didn't have a PS4 to play KH3, and only finished it this week when I had the free time and could could buy it on PC, and then went over 70 pages of your blog because I've been waiting so much to read your thoughts on the series and what new literary mismatch and parallels you made, my opinions are somewhat different but I always appreciate your takes and analysis

aw thanks. sorry there wasn't a whole lot of post-kh3 stuff to enjoy, i kinda fell off from making content shortly after 3 came out.

i miss making gifsets and finding parallels and doing my silly lit mismatches.

ever since i joined twitter i largely stopped posting here as i got my kh interacting 'fill' over there but it's like... a much less fulfilling thing. i feel disconnected from my love for the series now that im no longer creating and only getting reminded of the worst of the fandom on the daily over on khtwitter.

:/
