hey im not familiar with legal lingo so not the best source but as far as i can tell “grants release” means setting up the possibility for release (ie via bail). which could be what the poster is intending to say but the way this is presented makes it seem like they all Have been released, which is not true.

I’m sick of seeing posts about Yemen that don’t mention the source of the crisis. There is a REASON why there is a famine going on and most of the infrastructure for clean water, housing, medical care, etc has been destroyed. The reason being that Saudi Arabia, with United States support, “intervened” in the Yemeni civil war after the Houthi movement ousted the former president following the Arab Spring. The famine didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s the result of a naval blockade. The lack of clean water, healthcare, and housing didn’t come out of nowhere either. The country’s infrastructure was bombed to bits because Saudi Arabia and a coalition of eight other Sunni-majority states, with logistical support from the US, UK and France, are treating this as a proxy war with Iran which, like the Houthis, is Shia. This is genocide. It is intentional. They are TRYING to kill the Yemenis.

One story element I’d like to see more of is the targeted bride-price

  • Something like:  the newly-widowed queen knows she and her daughter won’t be allowed to rule their country themselves, so she has to agree that her daughter be married.  But she wants to ensure that her daughter gets a husband who will treat her well and that her land gets a ruler who will treat it well, so she rigs the game.  
  • Mercedes Lackey did a most excellent job of this in her 500 Kingdoms book The Sleeping Beauty, where the final challenge of the tournament to win the princess’ hand is to find a way to permanently protect their small but rich country from their many greedy neighbors (the winning concept is brilliant, btw, I grin every time)
  • I’m thinking also of that neat comic with the witch who says she’ll marry whoever gets the key from around her cat’s neck–but she is also the cat, and the only way to get the key is to befriend her. that’s a really great example and also one of the few I can think of where the person is setting their own bride-price, double credit.
  • any of those ‘the youngest/weakest wins by being clever’ or ‘the kind one wins by getting help from allies they helped along the way’ stories have potential to qualify, but I want specifically the ones where the person setting the bride-price did it that way on purpose to ensure a clever or kind winner
  • same for any of those stories where the thing which must be retrieved is incredibly fragile and only a careful, gentle person could retrieve it
  • or it’s worth a fortune and only an honest, selfless person could pass it up for the quest, y’all get the idea
  • or, genre-swap:  the mob boss has a handsome, powerful son, and all the other mob leaders keep trying to arrange for their beautiful eligible daughters to cross his path, and the mob boss says instead that the one who brings the most to the table will be allowed to marry their son
  • this phrasing I like because it’s got two possible subversions! 
  • 1) all the mob-parents keep trying to show off their resources and the boss gets to say ‘no, none of these count unless you’re trying to marry my son. what do your kids have to offer him’ and then whoever’s the most badass all on their own gets to win
  • or 2) mob-son is actually in love with a nice straight-arrow baker from down the road, who comes and brings a brace of pies literally to the table, and wins on a proper fairytale technicality
  • I just super dig the idea of taking the big heavy traditional concept of a bride-price (and the ensuant actual selling of a bride) and turning it instead into the mechanism by which a clever and caring person makes sure that they/their kid/their country will be safe and happy in the future

I learned from a tiktok video that a woman said she’ll marry whoever who could build her a castle and she pushed them out of the window of the castle. Dark, I know, but it actually happened. It was in Ireland.

  • When Keith turned 18 Shiro woke up early to paint all over his face shrek, a dick, a gay flag, and a frog on his forehead with colorful sharpies and then proceeded to smash his face against a pie when his alarm went off, Keith cried like 10 minutes and then swore to Shiro he would get vengance.
  • At Shiro´s birthday he took Shiro´s shampoo and filled it with vibrant yellow hair dye and cut holes on Shiro´s shirt where his tiddies were meant to show, and smashed an apple against his head.
  • Shiro used that shirt with pride on his eyes
  • Keith once played with legos and got a head stuck on his nose, he cried the whole time and Shiro had to help him get it off, Keith was 14.
  • Shiro recorded it.
  • Keith was banned from playing with Legos
  • Adam is a drama queen and gives Keith so much shit, he secretly likes the kid but he will never say it to his face
  • Adam: Takashi!!! Your demon ate my last taco!!!! I called dibs like 4 times!!! Keith: Shut it old man
  • Adam: T A K A S H I
  • Adam has a big fucking ego and Keith will never tell him but he actually loves his cooking, that´s the thing he most missed about in space, and when he comes back Adam prepares him his favorite food without having to ask, they banter the rest of the night but Adam its been so long since Adam smiled this wide.
  • When Shiro´s mad at Keith he´ll go around and give Keith´s phone number to girls who try to hit on him
  • Keith does the same but it´s to 60 years old women, joke´s on him because Shiro ends up befriending every single one of them, now they have 6 grandmas
  • Shiro: keith put on your nice sweatter we´re gonna see grandma Olivia
  • Keith: SHE´S NOT YOUR GRANDMA TAKASHI
