mental illness hasn’t been destigmatised but commercialised

Sooo true.

You can’t have serious conversations about your mental illness and you can’t even mention having one of the more stigmatized mental illnesses.

But you can endure a long line of ads recommending medications, self-care products, gym memberships, self-help books, online seminars, crystals, plants, sunlight lamps and other overpriced shit that’s supposed to be good for your mental health but is mainly just there to take advantage of people who are at a vulnerable place in life. Disgusting.

Marta Russel called this “handicapitlaism” and identified it as one of the traps of bourgeoisie/free market disability rights activism

It also feeds into the mindset that anything less than perfect Stepford worker-drone happiness is pathological and must be treated with consumption of Products & Services. The real problems aren’t capitalism and a failed health system: it’s that you didn’t buy the right supplements and self help books. It’s your fault.

sudden urge to burst into tears. im not a toddler i just agree with their beliefs

  • World is hard, scary, confusing
  • Needs not being met
  • Little to no control over my environment
  • Overwhelmed and need some release
  • Desperately want a nap

Yeah, that checks out

I was like, “wait is the singer trans” and then remembered that they’re intersex, and raged at the phrase “on the advice of doctors, their parents had their [genitalia] removed” in their dutch wikipedia entry. How did we ever let it get to the point where doctors make this kind of suggestion and coerce parents into this kind of violence.

(via MACHINE HEAD - NØ GØDS, NØ MASTERS (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) - YouTube) first concert in 4 years last night. i dunno if i’m making the right decision w/rt covid or not anymore.  wore a mask and used a nasal spray, don’t drink anymore, so there just wasn’t the previous obstacle to going to shows.  it was definitely a bit more crowded than a grocery store (even the one tiny co-op that was open on christmas, but only barely).  Had to catch up on WTF machine head has been up to since the blackening - still kind of in that same LoG-esque NWOAHM metalcore vibe, it’s fine. Like on paper this is just kind of a paint-by-numbers “pop” metal song, but the whole crowd shouting along with the “no-Oh-o-o-oh!” chorus is gonna stick with me for a while, it’s catchy and it had been far too long.

Favorite albums of 2023 It was hard to piece together a list this year. My listening was spread out over a bunch of things that didn't get rolled up into any convenient charts, including youtube album streams, pre-release mp3's uploaded to apple music, and friends' playlists on spotify. On top of that, my mood was all over the place, meaning that sometimes I could only listen to black metal and sometimes I couldn't listen to it at all.

  • 100 gecs - 10,000 gecs: nominally hyperpop, but like, if hyperpop was a direct descendant of They Might Be Giants with metal riffs?
  • Katatonia - Sky Void of Stars: i love my doomy swedes
  • Blackbraid - II: sonically this is like, uncanny valley Agalloch. it could 100% be a reunion album, but not in a cheap copycat way, more like in a "if Agalloch were actually indigenous and leftist and in the Appalachians instead of the Cascades"
  • Baroness - Stone: the last few albums from Baroness lowered my expectations of them greatly, but this one comes out swinging with Chat Pile/spoken delivery vibes, and it's so good and so much heavier while still sounding like modern baroness - somewhere between red & blue in terms of heaviness, but still as pastoral as their last 3
  • Rae Spoon - Not Dead Yet: what a title. I love Rae and losing their voice is inevitable but i'm glad it's not Yet. This is all the fire that comes from facing down death.
  • HEALTH - Rat Wars: please just keep mining 90's electro for nostalgia vibes forever i love it
  • The HIRS Collective - We're Still Here: All my favorite non-grind artists got together to guest on a grind album, it's exactly perfect
  • Liturgy - 93696: it feels like Laura Les from 100 Gecs and Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix will eventually convergently evolve in some form of ADHD avant-garde genre hopping, Laura from the hyperpop side and HRHH from the orchestral black metal side
  • Dawn Ray'd - To Know the Light: it sucks when you're like "this album is perfect, i want to listen to this a lot" and the artist is like "this album is perfect, I can never top this, the project is over." Folky atmospheric black metal is a dense field this year, but the job of squeezing Fen, Panopticon, and Heretoir into the runners up falls to Dawn Ray'd's perfect swan song.

Runners up

  • Metallica - 72 seasons: How amazing is it that I would even consider a Metallica album for a runner up. After 2 decades of trying to milk Rob Rock production into another epic "One", metallica went back to just rehashing Whiplash and it's a banger.
  • Janelle Monáe - The Age of Pleasure
  • Heretoir - Nightsphere
  • Panopticon - The Rime of Memory
  • Fen - Monuments to Absence
  • Crisis - 8 convulsions reissue: Karyn Crisis slayed in 1994, and it never made it to the internet (at least not the corners i've been on)

I’m tired of people acting like Zhongli is a serious and chill guy who would never cause problems on purpose as if he isn’t one of the biggest menaces out of the Seven. He used to throw mountains at Venti for annoying him. He, the god of history, starts fights among historians for shits and giggles. He tried to gaslight the Traveler into thinking he was totally not at the Chasm guys really Aether/Lumine you must be seeing things maybe you should go see Baizhu. When Qiqi wanted “Cocogoat” milk he was like “Oh yeah sure totally let’s go look for it” knowing damn well it was a wild goose chase. He made the Traveler sing to a flower and then was like “Oh would you look at that” when a Whooperflower jumped out to maul them. I love him. He’s like a cat pushing things off the counter to see how people react. I would pay to see him interact directly with Neuvillette because I know for a fact he’d get on that man’s nerves and argue about water tasting just to feel something. Furina used freedom from godhood to take a nap and Zhongli used it to give psychic damage to anyone who talks to him longer than 5 minutes. Iconic.

SO TRUE BESTIE like there’s literally a part where Paimon calls Zhongli a parasite and comments he has to live off other people’s credit because he can’t just make money for himself or get free shit for being an Archon anymore and he just looks at her and goes “I mean it’s just the Fatui’s money you don’t have to say it like that” LIKE EJRNRJRJRJFJR HE KNOWS WHAT HE’S DOING HE’S VERY AWARE HE’S JUST BEING A LITTLE SHIT BECAUSE HE CAN GET AWAY WITH IT

It’s even funnier when you consider it’s basically a middle finger to Pantalone because his entire thing is trying to take over the economy to spite Zhongli only for Zhongli to turn around and start mooching off him without consequence bro is a MENACE and I just know when Pantalone saw Childe’s financial reports he was frothing at the mouth about it

It was a children's promise, but both princesses meant it sincerely. If one was put in a tower, the other would come rescue them.

Years later, one sent a letter: "I am in the tower. But know, I must marry whoever rescues me."

The other princess ran to the stables at once.

I love that this track fires out of the gate with a sped-up quote from Metallica’s Outlaw Torn. A track which itself famously quotes Black Sabbath’s Sign of the Southern Cross in its bridge. Metal is Tommy Iommi’s genre, everybody’s just rehashing his riffs.  Also interesting that Metallica themselves put out another doom-y album closer this year. I swear i’m not always trying to re-insert my 14-year-old self’s favorite gloomy obsession - it honestly took me 5 months to figure out that the the 90′s nostalgia I was feeling from the Blackbraid riff wasn’t just in my head, it was a literal quote.
