When I was in school, that is not how they taught it. Wow.

i don’t remember this specifically from my HS texts but there is, or at least was, a small niche market of YA books about runaway slaves, usually running away with a white poor relation of the house, who make “stops” on the underground railroad and they were always benevolent white quakers &c

I learned the benevolent Quaker narrative and I was born in 1991, so if we’re trying to chart when they started teaching this, I’d say the early 1990s. Probably as a bid to “heal tension” for future generations.

It was definitely the 90′s and it came out of Texas. Then they were forced to stop teaching that BS (I want to say in 2007 but I could be off by a year or two) because I had been countering it in conversations with my kid & then the school got new books that were better.
