Someone say obscure Mickey history? WELL LOOK NO FURTHER THAN PAL MICKEY! So what was Pal Mickey? Pal Mickey was an interactive plush that could act as a tour guide of the Disney Parks! I see your doubt but let me explain!!!
So Pal Mickey was a GPS enabled plush that actually knew where it was in relation to the Disney parks thanks to infrared sensors placed in the parks that would give him information. First available in 2003 Pal Mickey was touted as the magical talking Mickey Mouse toy that talked and gave you facts and information about the area you were in.
If you were near the Haunted Mansion Mickey would react to that accordingly and tell you about it. If you were near tomorrowland he would give you a joke about how pluto was his favorite planet and if you made your way to Space Mountain he would talk about that too! Over 700+ phrases were recorded and put into this little guy. He had the ability to tell you about parade times, and even if a character was nearby! Given all the tech inside him he wasn’t cheap either, he was around 50 dollars but you had the odd option of renting him for 8 dollars a day!
This little smart guy was a labor of love from Imagineer Eddie Sotto and had the ability to work at all 4 Disney World Parks! All in all a crazy idea for a plush and one that I wish that would still try to incorporate today! Sadly though the plush’s were no longer sold after 2008 Pal Mickey still worked in the parks due to the infrastructure still being there, that is until 2014 when they dismantled them all.
SO now he remains a piece of odd and interesting Disney History! If you would like to see what he looked like in action click the video below! Thanks for this piece of history and Happy 90th Birthday Mickey!
You don’t meet a girl like that every dynasty!
