I don't know if it has been this way forever or a recent change, but I noticed that, in official copy, Nintendo never uses game titles as proper nouns, but as adjectives. They won't write "Splat your friends in Splatoon 2!" Instead, they'll write "Splat your friends in the Splatoon 2 game!" Any idea why they do this?

I bet it’s the same mentality that led to this gem.

‘Starfox Adventures’

[GCN] [FRANCE] [MAGAZINE] [2002]

  • Le Magazine Officiel Nintendo, December 2002 (#7)
  • via Abandonware Magazines
  • Ooh! I like the layout of this ad! Far superior to the other SFA ads I’ve seen! Also, I respectfully disagree with the purists: this was an alright game! Not what we wanted but you could do far worse.

Bad Language vs. Dragon Ninja

After watching Guru Larry’s “Top 5 Offensive Cheat Codes” video on YouTube I was reminded of this little saga that ran through a few issues of Amstrad Action regarding Ocean’s unorthodox copy protection methods in the then-recent release of Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja for the CPC.

Image

It began with this letter in AA’s “Byte Size” section in issue 75, alleging that the game printed an offensive message after the game was transferred to disk from tape. A claim that AA dismissed without a second thought.

Then, in issue 78 a second reader claimed the same thing had happened to them, without even transferring it to disk. The response is once again dismissive. After all, Ocean claimed to know nothing about it!

Image

Finally, in issue 80 there’s finally some concrete facts, complete with memory addresses for the offending message! Finally, Ocean admitted that the message was there, but that there’s nothing they can do about it. Ah, the days before patches!

Just for my own curiosity, I armed myself with the WinAPE debugger and went looking myself. I loaded up the game and started poking around until:

Well, there you have it. Clear as day! Thanks, Len Townsend of 24 years ago!

Wrote this in to the Bombcast, but thought I'd ask here too. Could you help me identify an arcade game? It was a spy-themed platform game for one or two players—think James Bond, or one of its many ripoffs. I remember there were standard side-scrolling levels where you could jump around while punching and shooting guys, but there were also underwater levels, where you could swim around and shoot at sharks and bad-guy divers with harpoon guns. Any ideas?

That’s probably Rolling Thunder?

Totally Sly Spy: Secret Agent.

Are you getting a Syndicate play session together? Because I unfortunately bought that game after the MP community was largely dead and never got to play as much as I wanted.

I just installed it again this morning. Not sure if/when I’ll have time to play it.

Awesome, I love Assassin's Creed.

“Portal Runner - ‘My Money’s On the Chick With the Lion’”

  • Uploaded by corsair, via the Hardcore Gaming 101 fourms
  • The Army Men series had a fruitful run back in its PS1-N64 hayday, with its air assaults and heroes of Sarge and whatnot, but does anyone remember its spin-off, starring the token Barbie-doll war-time reporter, Vikki Grimm?

Always bet on Vikki.

I remember it with its altogether less action-packed PAL box art.

“Stretch Panic”

  • EGM, September 2001 (#146)
  • Oh hey, it’s Stretch Panic! Here’s a game that tends to be descibed in two different ways. One way: ‘a bizarre, PS2 platformer by the cult-developer Treasure that utilizes a unique ‘grab and stretch’ mechanic to defeat colorful demons.’ The other way: ‘that one game with a breast expansion fetish.’

Also known in Europe as "Freak Out".

Jeff, I've just come across a group of people coming out in praise of the King Kong 360 game. Is this how things go? The only people to remember middling games are the ones who loved it? Or was that game actually solid?

The achievements were solid! But yeah, that game was definitely middling at best. And I suppose you’re right, the only people who usually remember junk like that are the people who, for whatever reason, remember it fondly.

I remember not hating it, but yeah… I only played it for the achievements.

What it it was renamed "Michel Ancel's Rampage"?

At its core, Lazy Jones is a collection of mini games, and while it's playable, the game is far better known for its soundtrack.

Outside of one or two more, um, "familiar" tunes, the "Stardust" game features a catchy track that was later lifted by German producers Zombie Nation and turned into the UK #2 hit Kernkraft 400.

"Also available printer cable" is possibly the least exciting piece of ad copy a human has ever had to write. That's saying something, considering it shares a page with he phrase "moulded in cream and brown".

I kept meaning to ask this after paris games week. Do you have any favorite french games? Have you ever played captain blood or commander blood?

Avatar

Holy shit, Captain Blood was the most confusing thing I’d ever played as a kid. I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing but boy did I enjoy taking aliens on board my ship, annihilating their planets then disintegrating them.

Frank Bruno's Boxing is a fairly shameless clone of the Super Punch-Out!! arcade game, albeit with added cultural insensitivity. Endorsed by Bruno, but not by Nintendo.
