Bad Language vs. Dragon Ninja
After watching Guru Larry’s “Top 5 Offensive Cheat Codes” video on YouTube I was reminded of this little saga that ran through a few issues of Amstrad Action regarding Ocean’s unorthodox copy protection methods in the then-recent release of Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja for the CPC.
It began with this letter in AA’s “Byte Size” section in issue 75, alleging that the game printed an offensive message after the game was transferred to disk from tape. A claim that AA dismissed without a second thought.
Then, in issue 78 a second reader claimed the same thing had happened to them, without even transferring it to disk. The response is once again dismissive. After all, Ocean claimed to know nothing about it!
Finally, in issue 80 there’s finally some concrete facts, complete with memory addresses for the offending message! Finally, Ocean admitted that the message was there, but that there’s nothing they can do about it. Ah, the days before patches!
Just for my own curiosity, I armed myself with the WinAPE debugger and went looking myself. I loaded up the game and started poking around until:
Well, there you have it. Clear as day! Thanks, Len Townsend of 24 years ago!
