Incredible how she’s simultaneously made a bop that’s genuinely catchy (aren’t all of her bearding songs?) and fun to sing along too, and is mocking the absurd picture that the public narrative has painted about their “romance” being “every girl’s high school fantasy”.

All the fans living vicariously through their American hetero princess, and she gives them a song that seems to point out how fucking archaic that dream is (American pie, grand theft auto, etc are from when she was a teen and are notoriously misogynistic)and childish (“truth, dare, spin bottles) sounds like she’s - even the sound of the song (which I love) sounds vaguely 90’s pop ish.

She even mocks the absurdity of this man being someone she could actually fall in love with “you know how to ball/I know Aristotle”. When I heard that line the first time I physically cringed.

Also love the discomfort and slight condescension of “get my car door, isn’t that sweet?”

And of course the kicker that you already mentioned of “it’s true, swear, scout’s honor” using a phrase associated with not just youth, but mischievous children.

Whether or not anyone from Taylor’s team actually spoke to CNN about the NYT article, let’s all be reminded that:

* Nobody speculated on Taylor’s sexuality. The author points out various ways in which Taylor flags queerness in her art and that suggests to queer people that she may be one of us. That’s not a speculation, that’s fact.

* The article is also largely about closeting in the entertainment industry. And that’s still very common (also fact) whether you like it or not.

* This beautifully written and heartfelt article makes a point for the kind of world that queer people deserve to live in. If you call that ‘inappropriate’ I think that says a lot…

And maybe most importantly: IF SHE WAS AN ALLY SHE WOULD NOT BE OFFENDED TO BE ASSUMED QUEER! Being gay is not offensive and if you think otherwise, that’s homophobia.

At no point does the author dig into her muses or speculate on who she might be dating. That’s a level of journalistic professionalism that a lot of lesser publications could learn from.

The fact that the argument is that speculating about her sexuality is gross when the mainstream media has no problem posting BS articles about Taylor moving in with Travis, Travis proposing, How will they spend the holidays, and on and on and on…….

They don’t even see the irony of their own idiocy because straight is the default. They don’t see that THAT is what was being attacked in the prologue they love to cite so much. No one cares that so many times Taylor has told us to pay attention to her lyrics. It’s beyond ridiculous.

the other big reason why i think a lot of lesbians have always really resonated with taylor's music is because her earliest work was so clearly not written from the point of view of someone talking about real relationships she'd really had, but from the perspective of someone very sheltered and inexperienced who was writing about the way the world has taught them they SHOULD feel, if that makes sense. her whole artistic perspective has always felt like that of someone who was very intelligent but also somewhat developmentally delayed socially/romantically, and when you look at albums like debut or fearless (or even speak now, red, and 1989, tbh), it was always like, the happy/romantic songs were about fantasy scenarios or very brief initial interactions with a lot of projection and extrapolation involved, or pining after someone untouchable or unavailable, and the ones that felt "real" and like they came from actual lived experiences were about feeling let down or uncomfortable with the reality of what came after that first rush. so yeah can you IMAGINE why women and girls dealing with compulsory heterosexuality and the fallout from it might possibly relate to those themes?
