Shade Headcanon

The Shade isn’t malevolent. It’s not good for dragons and it’s existence opposes them at every turn, but all it is is a primordial being that showed up at the dawn of Sornieth because it sensed something delicious in that direction. The implication in the encyclopedia is that it feeds off of magic, and a war between gods would basically be a neon “All You Can Eat” sign flashing across the cosmos. This is the reason it showed back up at the birth of the Arcanist, too; not because it had a score to settle, but because the explosion of a magical reactor that was powerful enough to wipe out entire civilizations and bring a god into existence would probably seem appetizing.

Just a good old, “Oooh, a food!” and here comes The Shade, to lick the magic off the proverbial plate.

And since this is the way of things, Shade-influenced creatures act similarly. These “horrorbeasts” or dragons and creatures overwhelmingly influenced by The Shade have insatiable appetites. The reason they’re so dangerous is a constant need to consume. Imagine a twisted hellmonster swooping into a clan and then just cramming everything with a hint of enchantment into its mouth, whether it be magical supplies or potions or the nearest Fae that couldn’t escape fast enough. Imagine dragons heavily drenched in Shade energy whose “hunger” for magic can’t be sated and so they go mad or find alternative ways to hoard mystic energy to try to fill a void that cannot possibly be filled, becoming more obsessed and desperate and hostile as time goes on.

They’re not evil, they’re just instinctual and starving, just like the shadow they originated from.

Adapted from the bogsneak one, the gaoler census is ready to accept data! You may enter your gaoler here, or if you just want to view the results, you want to go here.

There are only two conditions in which you should not enter your gaoler’s data: - they aren’t fully grown, - you see a glitched size when you look at their stats (length less than 4m, hilariously the same as modern tundras), which only occurs on nest cooldown.

After we have enough gaolers gathered, I’ll made a size chart for them just like with bogs and the other breeds. However, at this early stage, we can tell that they’re nearly the size of guardians!

First little summary at 7 hours and 157 gaolers!

Since we got parallel genes

does it mean that some genes are more "ancient" than others? meaning, exclusively modern breed genes have mutated after the ancient dragons went "extinct"? could you also say that these ancient genes are getting worshipped in some clans?

Unique gaoler genes that I drew. Gnarlhorns is probably my favourite gene I made for the site so far ♥

A soft reminder that FR used to regularly choke and keel over for mere 2000+ users. Now the normal daily load is often around 4000 simultaneous users and the site is working just fine with that. We’re now at over 6000 users online for the new breed and the site is slow but it is working. It might not load at times but it is still mostly usable which is a bit of a miracle to me at least.

Any site or service is ideally optimized for it’s daily load and events that cause heavy load are always special cases. It’s frustrating to have to wait so long, especially bc we’re all most likely trying to use Crying Workshop, but let’s also understand. Increasing whole server capacity for rare events like this might be nice, but it’s hardly a reasonable demand to make. Having a slow first day (or two) is not the end of the world for anyone.
