*pretends to be shocked but also maybe this will make people realize that Indigenous People Know What The Hell They’re Doing and Deserve Respect*

3 other fun/cool facts about the Inuit:

1. They also invented kayaks and dog booties.

Dog booties are actually really important for working sled dogs in winter to protect their paw pads from iceburn and keep ice from getting in between their toes and burning them that way.

2. The traditional Inuit diet is one of the healthiest in the world, and the most balanced for the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 consumption

Most modern diets consume way too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3.

3. Inuit is a plural noun. When speaking about a single person the correct word is Inuk (always capitalized)

For example, “This Inuk woman is wearing traditional Inuit tattoos”.

And she is wonderful

Avatar

Hey if you’re schizophrenic/psychotic I just want you to know that you’re a wonderful person and that you deserve so much better than the demonization, marginalization and stigmatization you face in this society.

Please consider reblogging this/other positivity posts for schizophrenic/psychotic people every once in a while. If you have more than 100 followers, odds are that a couple of them experiences psychosis and that they rarely see positivity posts for people with their symptoms.

How do you think robots would react to the trolley problem, where through both action and inaction humans would get hurt?

Avatar

In Asimovian canon I think it depends on the complexity of the robot—more advanced bots like R. Daneel Olivaw were able to juggle ethical problems and the laws quite competently, while others would have mental breakdowns and die when confronted with moral contradictions. It was also possible to program particular aspects of the Three Laws to have more or less weight in an individual robot’s decision-making processes.

I think the vast majority of robots would choose to save the greatest number of human lives and divert the trolley, though they might suffer irreparable psychological damage from the act and possibly die. They could, theoretically, use lethal force as a last resort to stop a mass-murderer from killing more humans, and our heroes do ultimately kill for The Greater Good when it is determined that it’s necessary to off a few people to save Earthbound humans.

In robot logic I think that’s equivalent to the trolley problem. You and I might have an easier time condemning an “evil” person to death than an “innocent” one, even if the evil person is not an immediate threat to anyone else. An Asimovian robot would most likely not consider the innocence of the people involved except insofar as to calculate how to minimize harm; we have an instinct to punish past wrongdoing, while a robot only has the instinct to preserve human well-being and prevent future harm.

Avatar

1) Robot must protect life, by direct action if inaction would cause human harm

2) Robot must obey human orders except in conflict with #1

3) verbatim - a robot will protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the 1st or 2nd laws.

Machine logic and the 3 laws dictate only one response to the trolley problem: robot must stop trolley before anyone is hurt, even to its own destruction and in direct disobedience of orders not to.

I’m genuinely bewildered as to why so many people seem to think the trolley problem is a riddle rather than an intentionally uncomfortable binary moral choice.

Like, the entire point of it is that you have only two options. There isn’t a secret third option of noble self-sacrifice, and if there is, you’re not talking about the trolley problem at all, you’re just describing a fantasy of heroism. An Asimovian robot would certainly sacrifice itself to save a human, as would a sufficiently altruistic human, if that were a feasible possibility. But the trolley problem continues to be the trolley problem if:

  • you are viewing the tracks remotely via a CCTV feed and you and the lever are both 50 miles away from the actual event
  • you are shackled to the floor with only the lever in reach, or locked inside a viewing room you cannot escape from

Only a very early and simplistic Asimovian robot would not be able to comprehend that attempting to physically reach the trolley would be impossible. Tugging futilely on the chain would probably register as inaction after it became clear that it could not free itself in time.

That is... Exactly why people have that reaction to the trolley problem, though? Like, why can't we find a third option there? Because the guy who came up with it as a defense of utilitarianism said so?

No, because it’s a thought experiment. No one is forcing you to engage with it—if you don’t want to think about it, you don’t have to. It’s not supposed to be comfortable or have a clean feel-good solution that everyone agrees upon is morally preferable. “I want to get out of this situation without feeling as though I have acted an executioner in some way” is the obvious human instinct, but if the question were “would you sacrifice yourself for others?” it would be an entirely different thought experiment.

Watching Pride And Prejudice And Zombies like

Perfection. Complete, utter, badass perfection and I cannot with the knives and the guns and the warrior daughters and the explosions and the flies and the first proposal and freaking Darcy’s letter and the story and the music and what are my emotions doing???

Avatar

Anyone else find the movie Pride & Prejudice & Zombies kinda… hot? Lol. Like all the pretty girls in corsets and garters with knives hidden in them kicking some major ass. I’m definitely into that.

Avatar
My daughters are trained for battle, sir, not the kitchen.

Mr. Bennet

I know it’s a small thing, but I love this quote. In period films, the dad’s usually always saying the opposite.

Avatar

I don’t know if I want lovable puppy eyed Macfayden Darcy, wet white shirt sexy Firth Darcy, or badass leather clad zombie killing Riley Darcy.

Avatar

honestly…what was going through Darcy’s head when he came up with the first proposal?? like i imagine him standing in front of a mirror practicing and being like “yes, this is the one, she’ll definitely say yes to these insults directed at both her and her family!”
