Upon returning to Republic City to set back the balance that Amon had disrupted, Korra found herself embracing her Avatar duties immediately. Hence, having to take a permanent leave from her probending team, The Fire Ferrets and it took her away from her friends: Mako, Bolin, and Asami.
Mako, having taken up a role as an officer of Republic City and Asami, taking upon head management of Sato Industries, left Bolin, as team captain of The Fire Ferrets. However, it left him to seek out new team mates much to his dismay and a determination to make a name for himself and out of the shadow of his older brother.
Korra, having a free day set out to watch a probending match and see how the Fire Ferrets were doing. She went to the arena to visit Bolin and see how he was doing? Last she heard, he was trying out potential firebenders and waterbenders on the team to see if they have what it takes of being a Fire Ferret.
She walked over towards the training room, where she knew Bolin would be practicing and warming up before a match. Surely enough, she found him to be focused as he naturally earthbended that earth disk into the goal perfectly. Korra clapped her hands and smiled. "Great job, but a little more light on your feet right?"
Bolin had this “focus” thing nailed down. The rest of the gang had left. He understood their reasons, though. They each had a calling or a duty to perform. Asami had a company to run. Like a real, giant corporation that could only be trusted in her hands. Mako had to keep the capital safe for Korra, as it was her purpose for coming here. And Korra, of course, was the Avatar. No explanation needed.
What was Bolin, though? He used to ask himself that question. What purpose did he serve in the gang? Korra was an excellent earthbender. She may have been impatient, but she was all about substance and strength. He wasn’t any better than his brother Mako, and couldn’t bring anything to the table that Mako didn’t already bring. All he was good for was fighting. And since there was no masked villain threatening his friends and the rest of the world, all he could work on was his probending. So he had made it his mission to become the best probender he could be. He spent the majority of his time training and got used to only thinking about training. Just the other day this incredibly beautiful fan of his had asked if he were interested in going to dinner with him. A fan, who was so excited to be in his presence, asked to go out with him. And he replied stating that he had to practice.
And it wasn’t only working out in the gym. He would go looking on the streets for a challenge. He would look for obvious criminals or go out in his best clothes, counting yuans as he slowly walked down the street. He read up on earthbending strategies and skills and was now able to metalbend. He spent a whole month under the wing of his new friend Lin Beifong, learning how to “see” with his earthbending. Damn right, he was serious about this.
Lin was his only friend. The only people he would talk to was Lin and his new teammates. Although, when he talked to his teammates he imagined them being Korra and Mako.
Where was I going with this? Oh, right. When Korra came to the gym, Bolin was not caught off guard. Surprised, yes, but he was used to surprised. He had trained himself around it. He actually expected Korra to be surprised with him and his improvement. He could probably carry Naga now with ease. You could definitely see the progress he had made.
Bolin hadn’t stopped when he replied, “Oh, so you’re giving me lessons now, miss Avatar?” He shot the last three disks into the practice goal before putting on a grin that showed he was happy to see her, but not over-childish, young puppy happy. He then walked up to her and opened up his arms for a hug. He didn’t even ask for her permission before he hugged her. He just went for it. Am I holding her too tight? Wow, she smells nice. Wait, do I smell? I’ve been working out for the last two hours. Yep, I smell. Am I holding her too tight? Bolin loosened up his grip. I probably wasn’t crushing her. She’s too strong to be crushed. But maybe I was showing off a little bit. Bolin loosened his grip again, which resulted in Korra’s feet touching the ground. I didn’t even realize that I was picking her up. I better let go now . . .
