Tez Has a Tumblr

@downtroddendeity / downtroddendeity.tumblr.com

Where a snarky nerd variously known as Shadow, Tez, and Lady Nighteyes talks about things. Tag novelist. Draculaposting before it was cool. Expect geekiness, tripled emoticons, JRPGs, and anything else that catches my interest. Most reblogs are queued. I tag fandoms and try to trigger warn for the basic stuff. Talk to me about Radiant Historia, but be aware that given the chance, I would set the remake on fire. AO3 (It's all Radiant Historia, natch)

*sighs and resets "days since last tirade about an extremely obscure subject in a group chat because someone was wrong on the internet about a video game" counter to zero*

A sample of other subjects I have held court about as a consequence of people on Gamepress and Wikia being wrong about this one same game:

  • Existentialist philosophy
  • Franz Kafka's The Trial
  • Touhou Seirensen: Undefined Fantastic Object
  • the use of references to Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" in The Phantom of the Opera
  • The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
  • The definition of the word "deuteragonist"
  • Predatory seabirds
  • Dwarves in Tolkien's legendarium and their cultural legacy
  • Modernist architecture
  • decorated nuclear physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer
  • the age of the United States of America
  • ancient alien conspiracies
  • T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land

(Luckily, because of this last one I reread The Waste Land, which caused me to fall down a rabbit hole of chasing literary references such that I am still 8 tabs deep in Arthuriana instead of making the mistake of looking at Gamepress.)

Almost tempted not to block this pornbot because apparently it empathizes with my pain. Also:

  • Franz Schubert
  • Ancient Greek geography
  • comparative Abrahamic theology (this one wasn't technically a rant, but I DID post a close-up of Selvan's face repeatedly)
  • radiation therapy

Oops

  • the Nintendo Entertainment System

Got another one, presumably because as of two days ago I also have to add

  • Chinese astrology

My suffering is unending.

If anyone was wondering, the best fix she nearly got banned for is that the lyrics for a character theme song have had the word "prostrate" typo'd as "prostate" since 2021.

Update: I have now also been banned because they've decided said friend was a "vandal" because she thought it was stupid that they're captioning random pictures of anime boys with Bible quotes, and they think I am her sockpuppet because I put back two of her corrections with detailed bird identification notes because I spent an hour digging up the correct species, but they are absolutely insistent that this

art depicting a light blue bird holding a teacup nearly as big as it is
ALT

is a blue jay

Which, to be fair, is exactly what I expected, given the previous posts in this thread.

Anyway, I guess we can now both say we at least tried to fix the fucking thing, and I can go back to pointing and laughing at their wildly incorrect plot summaries.

got told at lunch "you feel like Tumblr Incarnate" and i had to tell them i've been here for 13 years and counting. i was here three years before dashcon happened. i saw the mishapocalypse. i survived the gigapause. i've been here longer than the shoelaces post. i've been here since it was hipsters versus fandom and i played both sides extensively by overdoing the sepia filters on everything and making my own flashing galaxy gif edits for my fandom posts. i'm every tumblr. it's all in me

Oh ancient one what wisdom do you hold?

  • 99% of callout posts are bullshit and just petty personal drama someone is escalating to get even on a grudge. do not engage with these, do not freelance as a cop
  • DNIs do not work. accept this. internalize that people you don't like will see your posts and engage with them. this is unavoidable and the sooner you make peace with it the freer your mind will be. block the freaks and don't sweat the small stuff
  • building a tight knit circle of fellow weirdos who vibe with your particular quirks and taste is infinitely more rewarding and sustainable than chasing the biggest numbers
  • don't respond to bad-faith arguments or bad takes; just block people, blacklist tags, filter post content, and move on. don't feed the trolls (or the bigots)
  • don't hate-follow
  • don't tag your hate (ex. if you're posting about how much you hate a ship, don't tag it as that ship, etc.)
  • don't feel obligated to keep following someone who posts stuff that upsets/depresses/angers/bores you just because you know them really well, or because you're mutuals, or because you used to like what they post. following is nothing personal and neither is unfollowing
  • op doesn't know you; avoid parasocial relationships
  • don't pick fights or reblog posts just to disagree/argue
  • spread joy and positivity in your circles
  • disable anonymous asks

Hi I have a question about Pacific Rim. Given that the sparring is just A way to test for drift compatibility and any activity that requires people to collaborate and anticipate each others moves works, including stuff like multi player video games

  • Can you test for drift compatibility via improv comedy

They are piloting a Jaeger together in my imagination

fun fact: the Mr. Bankston here is Mark Bankston, the same lawyer who absolutely ruined Alex Jones during the Sandy Hook trial.

If yinz weren't reading parenting magazines and newspapers in the early 2000s you'll have no idea how much time the world spent blowing proverbial smoke up JKR's proverbial ass. She was routinely credited with solving a crisis in child literacy (the existence of which was never proved to my satisfaction). Harry Potter was read in schools. Libraries used it as the foundation of their summer reading programs. Literally every other fantasy book aimed at children was marketed as 'if your kid loved Harry Potter, they'll love this!', including books that were published decades before Harry Potter. Her philanthropy was legendary. She was, quite possibly, the most well-liked woman in the whole world.

I know that psychoanalyzing JKR isn't really the point, and that this is a task best left to the scathing oscarbait biopic that will inevitably be released about 10 years after her death. But I also think that this should be a cautionary tale to all of us. If you take a person whose prose clearly indicates that they're not thinking very hard about stuff, and then tell them that they're a world-saving genius for it, you bet your ass that they're never going to think hard about stuff ever again.

To be extremely clear: none of this is exculpatory. I do see JKR's life as a kind of tragedy, but in the sense that so many tragedies take people with very ordinary flaws and turn them into monsters. At any point she could have prevented herself from becoming what she became, the tragedy is that she didn't.

There's an argument to be made that there's a direct connection to how she got radicalized, too. After over a decade of me having to see "Mad about Harry? Try Diana!" on the back of every Diana Wynne Jones book I ever looked at, which drove me nuts even when I was 8, she put out her first non-HP book in 2012 and... nobody liked it. It was a bestseller, and then promptly became one of the most returned books in history. And then she wrote another book under a pseudonym in 2013, and... nobody bought it. It was only successful when her pseudonym was outed. And then when she started doing what (a loud minority of) HP fans had been clamoring for and giving more and more random authorial loredumps on Pottermore, she started getting more and more pushback and criticism for all sorts of reasons- she started turning into a punchline for stuff like Wizard Poopscourse (2015), and then 2016 brought the Pottermore stuff about other wizard schools that sparked a lot of genuine anger for being, uh, super racist. And that period, 2015-2016, is when she started liking and retweeting TERF accounts. And that made a lot of lefty fans' opinions of her drop even more, but the transphobes weren't criticizing her. They were still saying the sort of things about how she was the savior of feminism that the press used to coo about, because they were excited to have a new friend. And I also don't want to sound like I'm going, "it's the fault of those MEANIEFACES who WEREN'T NICE ENOUGH when they said the racist thing was racist"- she just spent ten years basically never getting any criticism or pushback from anyone about anything ever, and now people weren't treating her like an untouchable god anymore. Give it a few years, and now here we are.

"Autistic characters in popular media are always robots or aliens" I mean, that's just not true. Autistic characters in popular media in fact span a wide range of backgrounds, including (but not limited to):

  1. Time traveller
  2. Former cultist
  3. Morbid little girl
  4. Grown in a tube
  5. Ambiguously foreign
  6. Talking animal
  7. Curse victim
  8. Tech support
  9. Raised by wolves
  10. Ninja assassin
  11. World famous detective
  12. French

I’ve met most of these people and they are autistic. By the way

Bracken in castle dialogue:

Me, the Official Rolandposting Consultant: "Try asking him if that memory ghost in the DLC talking about health care means he was building more hospitals. It'll drive him nuts. 20% chance he dodges the question, 40% chance he says no and changes the subject, but 30% chance he launches into his stump speech on autopilot. The last 10%, he starts to launch into the stump speech, then he realizes he doesn't have to be diplomatic for the first time in thirty years and you get one of the saltiest, most absurdly technical rants you've ever heard outside of interdepartmental slapfights at Broadleaf about programming best practices."

It's been over a month and a half since I made this post and I'm still occasionally thinking about a pink-haired anime engineer who had to be dissuaded from putting rocket boosters in her leg accidentally triggering an incomprehensible 40-minute lecture on short-staffing, evergreen drug patents, and vertically-integrated monopolies and smiling to myself.
