I don’t really want to spam on Mako Appreciation Day, so I’ll just stick with this, and I’m overjoyed that this GIF set exists because this is my favorite Mako scene. That doesn’t mean it all goes downhill from there - this scene rates, for me, a 150 out of 100 on My Arbitrary Scale of How Much I Love This Scene. First off, the music! And the animation! (Obligatory.) It starts swelling in the background triumphantly (seriously, just go back and listen, it is the sound of a Big Moment Coming) as Mako is the only one left! of the Fire Ferrets, and the only thing we know about him right now is he’s kind of… a jerk. Okay, back yourself up, jerk, what’s so special about you? Why should we care?

So there he is, alone on the platform, three pro-benders trying to take him down, and we don’t really like him that much right now… and he waits it out. He is heavily outnumbered, but he just waits it out, perfectly cool, as we hear the announcer say that if he doesn’t hold on, their season is over (although I always laugh at the “weaving and bobbing” part, with his little run, snerk) Alright, so we don’t know at this point that really, this is Mako’s job, he’s gotta do this to eat - but as a character-trait establishing moment, it’s great. With everything on the ropes and three probenders sending him all of their shots, he doesn’t hit back but waits it out instead. He waits until they’re all done trying to hit him down and THEN he strikes - taking out the waterbender first, the one most threatening to his element, and then the firebender, who is most able to ward off his attacks, and leaves the earthbender for last, using the dust from the exploded disk as a cover to advance and take him out. The kid is a strategist, but more than that, he’s a patient, cunning strategist. Korra, the blunt, impulsive, bend-first-ask-later girl here to learn airbending, could use a guy like Mako on Team Avatar (and in her bed. Go tap that, girl). There is so much he can teach Korra about the art of the offensive.

yeah this is still my favorite mako scene because everything’s on the line and he pulled it off, by himself, and with style

Every moment As long as you’re mine I wake up my body And make up for lost time

I hate this being patient stuff. Just kiss each other again already.
