When Jimmy talks about Nancy, my heart smiles.

[SEP 30, 2015]

What did you learn about marriage from your parents?

That it could be fun. That they’re a team. They’ll set each other up for jokes or stories. My grandparents did it too: ‘Oh, tell that story about blah blah blah.’ I do it with Nancy. I’ll go, 'Tell that funny story about meeting the Obamas.’

What’s that story?

We were doing a show with the president. They drive the presidential limousine up. I was standing outside; I had one of those signs that you have at the airport. It said, 'President Obama.’ He got out of the limousine; he’s laughing. 'That’s good. That’s a good joke.’ He immediately came up to me: 'How are you doing? Where’s Nancy? I want to meet her.’

Really?

Yeah, those guys know what’s up. I go, 'She’s right over here.’ Nancy looked like she was 13 and meeting Justin Bieber. She was like, 'Uh, uh….’ After I was like, 'What was that all about?’ She’s like, 'He’s so cool. He’s so presidential. You feel the vibe.’ What a nerd! I was like, 'You could have acted a little bit cooler.’

You have two kids. But you’ve been open about the struggle to get pregnant. How did those years change you?

I can’t even describe what my wife went through. I thought I was gonna be the one to say, 'Okay, calm down honey, we’re gonna get through this.’ But she was the one in the driver’s seat going, 'Let’s try it again. Don’t worry.’ It got to the point where I was giving her shots in her leg. It’s a really tricky, tricky thing if you want kids and you can’t have them. I respect her so much. I knew she was cool. But this was proof that she’s supercool.

I was thrilled to pieces when I saw this scene. Disney could have written Gideon off like some bully character who never really amounted to anything, or got what was coming to him like a lot of those characters do in their movies.  Gideon made something of himself. He’s a pastry chef, something that’s not traditionally a job for men in media. And as soon as Judy speaks to him, he immediately apologizes to her. He doesn’t try to shrug it off as no big deal, or say that it was just boys being boys or whatever; he knows he hurt her, and he owns up to it. And Judy immediately forgives him.

Well done, Disney.

Also the language that he used is not something that he would have most likely grown up hearing/using. Describing his failings as self-doubt that manifested into “unchecked rage and aggression” sounds SO MUCH like therapy speak. So he’s either gotten counseling to help him with some of his problems, or sought out literature to help himself. A++ disney :)
