i think we should nuke facebook

So many people in my local homestead group dont believe in germ theory. Very difficult to give information about anything without them crawling out of the woodwork to reccomend that apple cider vinegar cures everything

Anonymous asked:

Would it be possible for feathers to mimic hair?

Just ask the ratites.

There are two ways to accomplish hairlike feathers. Cassowaries have long, flexible feather shafts with very few barbs branching off.

Ostriches and rheas have very frequent and large barbs coming from the shaft. These barbs don't lock together like most birds’ do, which results in them looking like several long hairs.

Sometimes people think my silked birds are furred not feathered haha

I GOT TO PET SOME CHICKENS FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY!

Oh my gosh I wasn't prepared for how the feathers feel, but I am so happy about it! I only got nibbled a little and I am surprised they didn't break the skin!

(There's noting else to this, I'm just happy)

Avatar

They are surprisingly soft arent they? But also rough in other ways. Them nibbling you is cute, they were saying hi :)

I've had some neighbors visit my chickens, and everyone seems surprised at how soft they are! It's like chicken feather softness is a best-kept secret

Whenever i used to bring Blue and Greenie put people were always full of wonder when they would pet them. They always expect them to feel rough haha def one of my favorite things to witness, someone petting a chicken for the first time.

does anyone else have chickens that sleep underneath one another?

Tallgeese has gotten into the habit of forcing her head and chest beneath Anzu, it looks quite bizarre. it reminds me of when Wormbecca was still a chick, and would try to snuggle beneath my arm - is 'tucking under mom's wing' just chicken self-comfort behaviour regardless of age?

Yeah its basically the chicken version of cuddling

So the Mykolaiv Zoo, one of Ukraine's most respected zoos, is on the front line of the Russian invasion. They've had rockets land inside their grounds, constant air raid sirens, and even a pitched battle close outside their gates. Through it all, the staff have continued to care for the roughly 4,000 creatures in their charge (many of which are endangered species). There is no way to get all the animals to safety (though they're doing any they can!), so the only real option is to care for them in situ. Some of the keepers have even taken to living at the zoo, as they were worried they could get trapped elsewhere and be unable to care for their animals. That's love.

Now, zoos aren't moneymakers at the best of times, and they've obviously been closed to the public for several weeks. BUT you can still buy tickets online, and help them out. Ten adult tickets comes to $34 USD, so my nine imaginary friends and I are going to the zoo tomorrow!

Come join us? 💛💙

Quick step-by-step:

1. Find the "Квитки ONLINE" link right below the big green banner. Click on it BEFORE changing website languages

2. Feel free to switch the language now from the upper right corner. Pick a day from the list and click the green "buy a ticket" button

3. Tickets Selection tab: the pricing table here won't translate, but it's basically listing ticket prices for adults, then kids, then dogs, in UAH. choose the corresponding number of tickets from the third column's drop-down menu, then check out from the bottom right corner

4. Contact Details tab: you will need to enter a valid email here and then confirm it with a code. The terms are boilerplate, nothing spammy. Agree and press continue, confirm the code

5. On the following page, your name and a phone number are the only required fields. Any phone number with the international prefix will work just fine. Agree with the public terms but untick the second box (it is untranslated, basically asks to send emails about future activities). Press continue

6. Delivery and Payment tab: choose electronic tickets here, and proceed to a secure payment processor via bank cards. Supports Liqpay, Visa, and Mastercard

*If you want to share the link with others, use op's URL. Do not share the one where it displays the tickets list, it will only revert back to the original landing page on a fresh browser cache; and seeing as Kontramarka is a state-wide tickets website, that will make things considerably harder instead of the opposite

I truly am obsessed with how Knives Out was like. Hello Daniel Craig, man who has spent the past two decades of his career being alternately beaten up and objectified playing an action hero with no personality. Would you like to please put on a shirt and an incomprehensible vaguely Texan accent and flex your character acting dark comedy muscles as well as your pecs for a while. And he's like BOY WOULD I and they made a work of art. Also love that they put Chris Evans in sweaters. Get your beefcakes then dress them nice make them soft and give them some bonkers character work to do it's what cinema needs more of

I love that several people have responded to this with "op I forgive you cause you're Scottish but that's not a Texan accent" which is fair thank you I appreciate it but no two people have agreed on what accent it is which is also Absolutely fair and hilarious as a reaction to this film

Cannot stress enough that I do not know what the fuck a foghorn leghorn is but literally a hundred people have said it to me so far so I'm assuming it's important to, like, Americans

The idea that Foghorn Leghorn,

The Rhode Island rooster from Looney Toons, is one of the Elder Gods of America, is honestly fascinating from a theological and folkloric viewpoint

Pardon me, but he is a LEGHORN, not a RIR. It’s in his NAME. Leghorns are an Italian breed. And yes, he is an elder god.

According to Foghorn's Tvtropes page:

Presumably, it's less that Foghorn Leghorn is a Rhode Island Rooster and more that he's a Rooster who lives in Rhode Island, possibly a Central Virginian Leghorn Rooster living in Rhode Island, though that implies a complicated and interesting life story that took him from Central Virginia all the way to Rhode Island

I would not rely on TV Tropes as an unbiased source. Wikipedia simple says his species is officially “rooster” and mentions a Leghorn being a breed of chicken. TV Tropes probably thinks the Cornflakes chicken is a RIR too.

I am potentially willing to concede he is a “barnyard mix” (cross between breeds) and his father, Harold Leghorn, was a leghorn and his unnamed mother was a RIR or other dark variety.

I love this site.

Sometimes it’s 1:30 am and you own chickens and you’re drinking whiskey in the bath tub and accuracy about iconic fictional chickens is the hill to die on, ok, and that’s why I love Tumblr.
