My baby daughter got her adorable puffin-print dress absolutely CAKED in mud crawling around the yard and my first thought was "oh no her beautiful dress"

And my second thought was "oh huh it really WOULD be easy to unconsciously steer her away from playing in the dirt. Unlike my son, whose outfits are usually some kind of solid dark easily washed pants plus a shirt that doesn't trail in the dirt like a dress does."

Anyway something something gender roles start getting shoved on kids from literal birth, but with a little time to think about things, YOU TOO can let your children of any gender absolutely destroy their clothes in the dirt pit they're digging in your garden

I'm trying to find the exact quote, but this is basically the guiding principle behind Baldesar Castiglione's Il Cortegiano (The Book of the Courtier). If you're looking to be the ideal 16th century Italian courtier you should definitely be dilettantemaxxing. Remember kids, if you're too good at something that means you're trying, and if people can tell you're trying, well that means you're lacking sprezzatura, and if you're lacking sprezzatura, well baby, you've got no grazia, and if you've got no grazia well no one is gonna want to hang out with you.

Oh....... well......

I have to say this has been one of the few things that has seen my habit of learning "just enough" of a skill in two weeks and then dropping it, as a good thing.

It took me a good long while to see it not as a string of failures but instead, learning enough to know what I don't know. Starting from zero you don't even have the vocab to search what you want to know.

Put in two weeks to two months on the subject and you now have enough info and skill to use in other pursuits.

So I binged the entirety of How To Build a Sex Room last night and this one scene just cracked me up

The designer's at a western leather/tack store looking for supplies to make a rustic-style sex swing and turns to one of the store employees for advice, which initially goes about as amusingly as you would expect

So then she pulls up some pictures to give him an idea of what she needs

And he's Immediately like

The professional disgust, I'm living

Shinjuku Boys (1995). Tatsu, a transgender man, jokes with his barber about his changing appearance, and his newly masculine features.

TRANSCRIPT:
BARBER: So you go regularly to the hospital for your hormone injection? TATSU: [nods] BARBER: Does it hurt? TATSU: Not at all. BARBER: You have more facial hair. It must be the hormones. You’ll get a moustache soon. TATSU: I’ll look distinguished! They’ve made quite the difference. I never thought I’d change so much. Most customers say I’m like a man. BARBER: Really? TATSU: [laughing] They say, “You look like a man. You’re not cute.” BARBER: [laughs]
END TRANSCRIPT.

I love seeing this, because I've looked for many things about trans guys in Japan (in trying to understand how Japan views transgender people on the whole) and other than a few recent things, everything was exclusively about trans women.

This is the opposite of those “oddly satisfying images”

it’s funny and all but it’s also an example of how corporations will cheat people in every single possible way they are legally able to get away with if there isn’t any system of regulation to protect consumers.

‘relationships are work’ means ‘you have to put effort into loving each other intentionally & learning how to love each other and communicating properly’ not ‘your relationship makes you feel stressed and sad most of the time & the other person disrespects you and treats you bad but you stay anyway’

White People on tumblr who dont listen to rap, ignoring all the racial and historical context of why Kendrick is going against drake to just make it a fun trendy meme/ Kendrick being a hater is the same exact reason Kendrick called drake a colonizer

As someone who knows, like, nothing at all about rap, could someone give me a SparkNotes rundown on the racial/historical context of the situation? Because I've tried to find a good summary but mostly all I've found is very light hearted "lol this is hilarious" stuff or dramatised "OOHHHH, THERES BEEF' stuff, which hasn't really helped me work out what's going on

There are no "sparknotes" for years, if not at least decades of racial/historical context for a whole genre of music that leads to this point.

However, if you're truly interested in learning about it, F.D Signifier has a whole indepth video about Drake and where he stands in the Rap/Hip Hop community

Also

This is a good follow-up to that video

Also, for general understanding of how Hip Hop ended up comodified to give even more context and understanding why it's considered that Drake is just a colonizer in the genre, I recommend Lil Bill's 3 parter on how the hood and subsequently rap and hip-hop got comodified

Theres also vids going over every diss exchanged between Drake and Kendrick and all that but those don't go over why people like Drake are a problem.

This is a distance of roughly 625 miles and we are going to assume that the speed does not include the time penalty of Spain having a different Rail Gauge than France.

At 890 miles of rail you can get New York to Chicago which would be the ideal first route, but what can you get with 625 miles that makes more since than Columbus?

Well at that distance you can get Raleigh-DC-Philadelphia-NYC- Boston

With intermediate stops in Richmond, Baltimore, New Haven, and Providence

That is a route that is not only good, but has potential to be one of the most used rail lines in the world if it were at high speeds and a cheap price

How about putting some more rails, especially high speed, out here in the midwest, so those of us stuck out here can travel without hours in a car or spending hundreds on a plane ticket?

I guess another route of equivalent length would be St.Paul-Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago- -Indianapolis-louisville

@amtrak-official is doing good stuff promoting trains but it’s always northern cities. I live in Alabama and I want trains too! I wanna go to the aquarium in Tennessee, I want a fast and easy way to get to Gulf Shores. I want the Grand Canyon, Disney World Florida, Myrtle Beach! I wanna ride a train for less than two hours just to get Starbucks at Rock City

I could do Chattanooga-Atlanta-Montgomery-Mobile -New Orleans within roughly 650 miles of track
