I’d divorce him too lmao

It’s never JUST about the tomatoes.

Basically!

Throughout the day, partners would make requests for connection, what Gottman calls “bids.” For example, say that the husband is a bird enthusiast and notices a goldfinch fly across the yard. He might say to his wife, “Look at that beautiful bird outside!” He’s not just commenting on the bird here: He’s requesting a response from his wife—a sign of interest or support—hoping they’ll connect, however momentarily, over the bird.

The wife now has a choice. She can respond by either “turning toward” or “turning away” from her husband, as Gottman puts it. Though the bird-bid might seem minor and silly, it can actually reveal a lot about the health of the relationship. The husband thought the bird was important enough to bring it up in conversation and the question is whether his wife recognizes and respects that.

These bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being. Couples who had divorced after a six-year follow-up had “turn-toward bids” 33 percent of the time. Only three in 10 of their bids for emotional connection were met with intimacy. The couples who were still together after six years had “turn-toward bids” 87 percent of the time. Nine times out of 10, they were meeting their partner’s emotional needs.

Damn, this made me think of all the “shouting into the void” social media posts everyone makes. Just bids for connection. From ANYONE.

I think that is ABSOLUTELY what a lot of that is. Our culture is very isolated (even BEFORE covid!), and we’re desperate to connect with others. I read an article one time that suggested that childcare workers stop saying that a child is “Just wants attention” and start saying that the child is “looking for connection.” We’re starved for it even from childhood.

When they are speaking about a passion, respond to children as if you would a tenured professor at a prestigious university, and to an adult as if you would a child free of the burdens of adulthood.

Children are desperate to teach the wonders of the world that they know, that they have just learned, and share it with anyone interested.  Adults pour passion they didn’t know they had into voluntary obligations, and crave a simple acknowledgment of that passion as being worthy and valid.

“Dear third grader, tell me exactly why you chose <x> as you third favorite carnivorous dinosaur instead of second, as specifically as possible.”

“Hey neighbor, your vegetable garden is absolutely gorgeous this year…and no I’m not just saying that because the tomatoes you gave me last year were absolute perfection.”

This is why I find it odd when people disparage/make fun of people for live streaming mundane things like them chilling and eating and going “who would watch that?”

Someone also chilling and eating and just looking for a brief connection to another human being? Even if it’s on the other side of the screen? Even if they’re not necessarily even speaking to each other.

It’s knowing that at this moment in time you know what another human is doing across a vast distance and for a moment the world doesn’t feel so large and empty.

Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!

The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.

This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.

The second is a fast and easy stretch that soothes your vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for calming you down. The vagus nerve, for those unfamiliar, is stimulated by deep breathing such as yawning, sighing, singing, or taking a deep breath to calm your anger in a tense situation.

You can stretch this out by sitting up as straight as possible (this does not have to be perfect to work) and interlacing your fingers. Put your hands on the back of your head with your thumbs going down the sides of your neck and, while keeping your face forward, look all the way to one side with just your eyes. Hold that until you feel the urge to breathe deeply or yawn, or until you can tell there’s a change. Then do the same thing on the other side. When you put your arms down, you should clearly be able to turn your head farther in both directions. If the first session doesn’t get rid of your migraine, rest and repeat as many times as necessary. I even get a little fancy with it and roll my eyes up and down along the outer edge sometimes to stretch as much as I can.

If you need a visual here’s a good video on it. I know some of the language they use seems questionable but this is real and simple science and should not be discarded because it’s been adopted by the trendy wellness crowd!

I seriously cannot believe I didn’t hear a word of this from any doctor in my life. Additionally, if you get frequent recurring migraines, you may want to see a dietician. Migraines can be caused by foods containing histamines, lectin, etc. and can also be caused by high blood pressure in specific situations such as exercise, stress, and even sex.

If any of this information helps you I’d love to hear it btw! It’s so so fast and easy to do. Good luck!

*currently suffering from a horrible migraine. Tries this*

Are you fucking shitting me it works!?

@thebibliosphere I don't know if it'll help, but it may be worth looking into.

This is something my magic physio man also taught me. It helps if your migraines are triggered by muscle tension. Not so much if you have other root causes like OP mentioned above.

imagine the most meanspirited, unlikeable, rude, bitter, self centered, negative person you can think of. not a rapist, not a murderer, not an abuser. just a charmless, tactless, dyed in the wool asshole you wouldn't want to spend two seconds with. now assume they get sick, not with the flu, but with a long term, serious illness that limits their ability to provide for themself. a society in which that person is left to die alone because nobody likes them on a personal level is a failed society.

and the thing is, no matter how likeable or charming or cute you are, peoples' patience runs out. the friends who drop everything to rush you to the ER the first time you shit blood tell you to stop being so tmi the fourteenth time. people might give you a couch to crash on the first week after your shitty ex kicks you out, but by week eight, you better have another place to stay. people run out of time, patience, money, compassion, energy. there needs to be an impersonal option, a real safety net that isn't going to dump you when you become inconvenient

Yet y’all paid for the checkmarks?? I’m confused here, do we hate tumblr’s money-grabbing or not?

It's not about "hating Tumblr's money-grabbing", it's about having an opinion on how Tumblr makes money. They have to make money in order to survive, there is infrastructure to pay for in the form of servers and the support for those, and there is staff that deserves to be paid for doing the work to keep the site running and they deserve things like health insurance too. All of that costs money, and Tumblr has not been making enough of it to meet those needs.

So I accept the reality that they need to have income, but I want it on the user's terms. The checkmarks are a silly joke making fun of Twitter that lets users decide to "opt in" and give Tumblr money. It's clear from the beginning what we get for that money and what Tumblr gets from the transaction, same with paying to put crabs on your dash for a day. It's a fun, very Tumblr-like thing that gives me a way to choose to support Tumblr without significantly changing my or others user experience and without losing any of what I enjoy about Tumblr.

Tumblr Live is not that. It is a new feature that no one asked for and which is clearly trying to grab some of the popularity of TikTok. I don't judge anyone for enjoying TikTok, but it's not my kind of thing, and it's not what I come to Tumblr for. Video is a very popular format with advertisers, so I am guessing that's part of why it was implemented. It concerns me that this may be the beginning of Tumblr shifting towards catering to advertisers rather than its users, and that shift would destroy the uniqueness of Tumblr and make it just like every other shitty social media site that's all about harvesting and selling users' data.

So yes, I paid for the checkmarks because it's funny, I wanted to, and it doesn't change my user experience. And yes, I hate Tumblr Live because it's opt-out and indicates a potential shift in the focus of Tumblr, which I don't want.

Tumblr making money is good. Tumblr making money by homogenizing itself to be like other apps is very very bad. Right now it fills a niche that other social media sites/apps won’t touch. So far it’s still mostly a user-based site with little algorithmic intrusion. This latest addition threatens to alter the very nature of the site and make it  just like everything else: an advertiser-based popularity contest where the Algorithm controls everything and users have a harder time finding the content they like.

If tumblr turns more to a video focus that means only the “beautiful” people will be popular. And traditionally that translates to “white” and probably “straight.” Anyone who’s less-than-perfect, who has body image issues, is camera shy, or otherwise hates being recorded is going to be left behind. Vid-based content is very much about selling yourself above everything else. Your ideas, your stories, your art or whatever else is secondary if you don’t “look good for the camera.”

That isn’t what I want from tumblr. We already have tiktok, twitch, and youtube. I’m here because this place isn’t like that. So far.

This is why I’m not on TikTok and I barely use Facebook and Twitter. If Tumblr goes the way they have, I will leave, and so will a lot of the people who make Tumblr worth being on.

I am not a product for advertisers. Nor am I performing for clout. I’m hanging out with my friends and sharing things I enjoy and that I hope they will enjoy.

If Tumblr stops being the place for that, I’m gone, and either another site will take its place or I’ll tell all my mutuals how to find me on Discord or Telegram.

my singing voice is good for showers and mornings in the kitchen and drunken nights and lullabies for babies who need sleep and im okay with this

i think it’s silly to be ashamed of your art because it’s not in a museum and of your voice because it’s not selling out stadiums. there will always be people who enjoy and appreciate what you can do.

Idk why but this hit me really hard and I’ve been staring at it for a couple minutes.

ive been reading a book that basically explains how so-called “brain differences” between the genders is the result of gendered socialization and not the cause of it. i honestly expected the book to be very cis-centric but its actually the opposite, the author stresses that testimony from trans ppl is actually indispensable because we’ve, in a sense, “lived both experiences”

more cis feminists should have this mindset

one of the first examples that she uses to introduce her point about how perception by others can shape a person’s performance actually uses a trans woman. it explains that as a certain trans woman became to be seen as a woman more and more frequently, the ppl arond her eventually started viewing her as being ill equipped for tasks that they did not bother her about pre-transition. eventually she even found herself underperforming in these tasks herself.

whats the name of the book

Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine

I knew it was this book before I’d finished reading the first two lines. Honestly this book is indispensible if you want to debunk any gender determinism people claim is science. I can’t recommend it enough.

She’s written a new one! It won the Royal Society prize for science book of the year, and it’s called Testosterone Rex, and it is excellent.

(Bonus: it’s making old white men really really mad.)

(Bonus bonus: I am myself a neuroscientist, and the old white men mentioned above – who are not – could not have missed the point harder if they’d actively tried. Which. Maybe?)

Thanks to moon-boob for providing a PDF, but please, buy the book if you have the disposable income. SUPPORT THIS AUTHOR!!

Yes, support this author!

Fair warning: there are TERFs that claim she supports their ideas. I can only imagine they are so deluded by the constraints placed on their imagination by their beliefs, or are engaging in cherry-picking to deliberately misrepresent the author.
