TOP 10 GAMES ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Games Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • In 2000-2006, FFN used Miscellaneous RPG as a catch-all tag for all books that didn’t have their own category yet. It was then renamed to Misc. Games in 2007 before it was removed by 2008.
  • In 1999, fanfiction weren’t divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms.
  • In 2000, Final Fantasy had 2372 fics and then dropped down to 743 the next year because separate categories were created for each Final Fantasy game instead. This category was removed from the Games section by 2006.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren’t available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.
  • This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the Games section are correct. I can’t seem to get the same numbers for some of these categories when I go to the specific categories’ page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though… I’m not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

Tumblr "feminists": yuri is for men

Twitter dudebro weebs: yuri is for men

Yuri authors: Don't forget to block the annoying heteros (Iori Miyazawa) don't use my characters in your gross homophobic memes (Nio Nakatani) I'm making this manga free because I am a lesbian and I want to spread awareness and someday be able to get married to another woman in my home country (Alt Hanakage)

Now that I'm home from work I actually want to go into a bit more detail!

Iori Miyazawa (Otherside Picnic) - had a rather long rant in an interview about readers who are locked into "heterocentric values" and don't accept that lesbians actually exist, he suggested blocking them when you encounter them on social media.

Nio Nakatani (Bloom Into You) - Sayaka's homophobic senpai was a meme for a while with Japanese edgelords who used her as a sort of Homophobic Hero, so she lambasted them on twitter

Alt Hanakage (Senpai no Kouhai) - is an out lesbian who has talked about how her personal experiences inform her work. She made a short manga called "Ring On My Finger" about her frustration at being unable to marry another woman and made it available for free because she wants more people to understand her frustration.

And while I'm here I also want to shout out this butch x butch yuri anthology, which was spearheaded by yuri artist Natsuo Mutsumi (self-described nonbinary lesbian) and features work by many other LGBTQ mangaka including Alt Hanakage (mentioned above) and trans artist Nekobungi Sumire (who has a tumblr!! @ nekobungi )

All of these books are queer, but they all have back blurbs that don’t say they’re queer. While this can be a pain if I’m scouting for queer SFF, it can come in handy for people in a situation where they don’t want to be reading queer books openly.

Please do note that I don’t have hard copies of the books on hand so it’s possible that an author quote or something mentions one being queer (I feel like this isn’t super likely, but I don’t want to rule it out). Some might also have author biographies mentioning that the author is queer. Also, some may be shelved as LGBT on Goodreads or categorized as queer on Amazon. So if you’re planning on asking for any of these as holiday gifts, I would suggest going to the Amazon page or where ever your relative is likely to buy it from and double check that it’s something you’d be comfortable with sharing openly.

I wish I had more pansexual books, but the ones I know of tend to mention queerness in the back description.

With the exception of The Spy with the Red Balloon, these are all books I have read or are currently reading. If you want to recommend others, feel free to do so in the replies!

Links to the queer books database (or Goodreads if the book hasn’t been added yet) are available below the cut. You can find information on content warnings there.

Wow I can’t believe even McDonald’s has an anime now

anime marketing was a mistake

Jesus this has better animation than half the shit that came out this season

While millions of anime studios around the world are struggling to make anime, McDonald’s can effortlessly create a masterpiece

Reasons My Immortal is like the Iliad

  • We know only a little about the author(s)
  • Weird time shenanigans
  • Gay/Bi characters (or ones that would be considered as such)
  • lots of weird names
  • both were written during a dark time in their cultures
  • the originals are now lost
  • long and loving descriptions, especially of clothes
  • important aspects are constantly repeated
  • as are some entire sections
  • people are known by multiple names
