FREE EDISON REX! The critically acclaimed comic series finds new life on the web
Chris Roberson (co-creator of iZombie) and his collaborator Dennis Culver are pleased to announce their comic EDISON REX will now be available to new readers as a free webcomic while a Patreon funds the creation of the character’s further adventures.
EDISON REX, the story of the world’s greatest villain who appoints himself defender of Earth after defeating the world’s greatest hero, was launched as a digital-first series through Monkeybrain Comics on ComiXology in July 2012, assisted by Stephen Downer on colors, John J. Hill on letters, and Dylan Todd on design. It garnered praise from critics and readers from the start, with USA Today calling it the “best indie book you should be reading,” and Comic Book Resources describing it as “a love letter to superheroes [that] accomplishes a rare feat in action funnybooks: charm.”
Now, four years after the series debuted, it is being relaunched as a free webcomic hosted by Hiveworks at www.edisonrex.net. The full series to date will be serialized on the site, with updates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then will be continuing with all new material. In addition, the creators will be offering exclusive Patron-Only content at www.patreon.com/edisonrex, including early access to upcoming issues, behind the scenes looks at works in progress, annotations, commentary, and a shirt-of-the-month from the team’s Threadless Artist Shop, edisonrex.threadless.com/.
Well, it's been two years (!) since the last issue of Edison Rex was released, but the story isn't over yet. Edison Rex #17 is out today, and next month we'll be back with issue #18 as well as some big announcements about the future of Edison Rex!

This issue is a big deal for Chris and me. Along with Amelia Cole also out today we’re the first Monkeybrain books to hit the 12th issue. Not only is it an important milestone for us but it wraps up what will be the second print collection of the book which will be available in the spring from IDW.
Chris and I have put a lot of work into the overall Edison Rex story and if you’ve been reading the issues as they come out I invite you to take the time to reread all 12 issues (including the Rexfiles!) together. Each issue a satisfying read that can stand on it’s own but when linked together starts to create a much larger picture. We’ve planted a lot of seeds that are starting to bear more and more fruit as the book continues. My favorite comics are ones that reward me for rereading them all together and it’s our hope you’ll find that with our book.
Finally, if you’re enjoying our book then please help us spread the word about it. Our goal is to get Rex into the hands of everyone that would enjoy it. If you know someone that isn’t happy with the current state of the super hero genre then give them our book. We’re offering a kind of story that is not being told right now by the Big Two. We’re really proud of the work.

Greg McElhatton has nice things to say about Edison Rex #12 in his review on Comic Book Resources. Things like…
"Edison Rex" #12 is another strong installment from a consistently great series. Those who prefer to wait for print can pick up the collection of #1-6 already, with a second volume containing #7-12 scheduled for next spring. Personally, though, I wouldn’t wait. At 99 cents a pop, you’re getting a great deal here and a lot of the fun is how well Roberson and Culver are using the serial format to build up the tension and suspense. If you aren’t reading "Edison Rex" yet, at just a dollar, maybe it’s time you gave it a try yourself.

For the Person Who Can Talk for Hours About Their Love of Superman: Edison Rex Edison Rex is an extended look at what happens when Lex Luthor wins the eternal battle against Superman and has to put his money where his mouth is and become the world’s protector. Written by a man who clearly loves his Superman history, Chris Roberson, and illustrated by a person able to switch styles to fit whatever part of that history Roberson is playing with, Dennis Culver, this title, part of the Monkeybrain debut, may be my favorite. Created by two men who are so in sync that Culver once told me sometimes they aren’t sure who had which idea first, it hits all the right notes. Heroes and villains alike want to know what Rex’s long game is, and anyone who reads this one will, too. Available as a trade from IDW or digitally from Comixology.

I think Russ Burlingame likes Edison Rex. He has this to say about the series in his “Ten Comics I’m Thankful For This Year” at Comicbook.com.
Dennis Culver’s clean, almost traditional-looking art belies just how crazy this book can be–in a good way. Monkeybrain Comics publisher Chris Roberson, who writes it, would be my personal pick if I had to choose a “Most Likely to Be Alan Moore Someday” in the comics-professionals high school yearbook.
Why? He’s a tremendously talented writer with a flair for the absurd, a passion for incorporating the tropes of non-comics fiction into comics, a deep sense of what makes superheroes special and particular characters tick.
He’s also managed to burn his bridges with his former employers at DC so thoroughly that seeing him start his own comic book publisher, and then immediately launch a title that’s been fairly described by more than one critic as the best Superman book the market has seen in years, was actually not at all surprising.
The subgenre of superhero self-examination, epitomized by Watchmen but also encompassing books like J.M. DeMatteis’s The Life and Times of Savior 28, is one of my favorites, and Edison Rex manages to play in that world with the kind of gleeful abandon that Grant Morrison managed during his best Animal Man work, but which is a truly rare pleasure to read.
