She doesn’t immediately agree, because she’s not sure it’s what she wants. But she can’t have what she wants – she knows because she’s seen his wrist, seen the unfamiliar name on it. And Pepper isn’t the type to just sit around waiting for serendipity to occur, if that’s what this is. 

But what if it is? What if that’s the reason things never worked out with Tony Stark – because this person really is the final cobblestone in the path? Her missing piece? She brushes her hair out of her face, almost shyly, under his intense gaze.

“Yes,” she replies, with a small smile. “Who knows what could happen? Fate dictates that we’re meant to be together, but maybe logically, we could fit, too.”

And that was another question. What did “together” mean to her? Friendship? Romantic companionship? That was the problem with soul mates, one never knew right away quite where they stood, what the other expected from it. Just that they were bound to another being, whether they wanted to be or not. Whether they should be or not.

“Right.” Holmes reached into his pocket, pulling out his wallet. “I’m afraid I was on my way somewhere, but I can give you my business card.” Soulmate or not, he could hardly drag a woman he’s just met with him to a crime scene. He pulled out a small slip of paper, no decoration or frills, simply his name, occupation, and contact information, offering it to her. “My work makes for odd hours, but I always have my phone.”
