Sparkling Randomness

In 100 words or less, I'm a thirtysomething native Brooklynite writer who works in the publishing industry to get a paycheck. I have amazing friends and varied interests that usually fill my hours without effort. I've been called passionate, quiet, crazy, loving, silly, smart, snarky, witty, and strange, which are all accurate.

Due to a protest at my college, Hillel had to move tonight’s Seder to a secret location and have barred last-minute registrations.

I signed up in time to go, but I’m disappointed that some people who want to go may not be able to. I really wish this was an event that could be more open to students who may have been on the fence about going.

The fact that Hillel has to hide the location of a Passover Seder is horrifying to me.

This is Shani Louk, as her family asked people to remember her. Her family asked NOT to spread That Photo. Her family asked people to remember her for the way she lived.

So here's a photo of Shani Louk:

The man who took the picture of her dead body being kidnapped by terrorists just won a prize for that.

The man who came with those terrorists. Who knew the attack is going to happen. Who took photos and show himself holding weapons.

The man who worked with the people who aimed and killed and raped

That man

Won a photography prize

For taking the photo of

A young murdered woman.

For doing nothing but

Stand aside

And encourage.

Her family didn't even get her Body back.

Shani isn't buried.

I am disgusted. There are no words I can use.

ReneDescartwheel on Reddit wrote:

The content of the photo is a young Israeli woman lying dead and half naked in the back of a pickup truck, bleeding profusely from a hole in her skull, with her murderers using her as a foot rest, en route to be paraded like a hunting trophy in front of cheering mobs of Gazan civilians. And yet, the caption of the award couldn’t have been more dismissive of the October 7th atrocities if Hamas had written it themselves. It paints a picture of a well planned and successful military operation, without a single detail of the brutality of the massacre that is necessary to give context to this photo. The language used is deliberately minimizing. For instance, instead of saying that Hamas took hundreds of hostages, including women and children, they said “…taking dozens of captives”. That’s it. Could be 24, could be 253. Whatever. Somehow, despite the content of the photo, most of the description was dedicated to conveying the details of Israel’s retaliation.

MadUmbrella added:

TIL that initially on 10/7 the image sold by Ali Mahmud to AP of the abduction of Shani Louk’s body was identified by AP as “the body of an Israeli soldier”, so AP took the words of Ali Mahmud, a palestinian terrorist, and called Shani Louk “an Israeli soldier” while she was a civilian tortured and killed at Nova music festival. AP shared the photo on their newsfeed on 10/7 at 7:41 am, just a few minutes after the photo was taken and added the caption provided by Ali Mahmud who knew that his friends were kidnapping, torturing and murdering civilians at the Nova festival. This is complicity in the crimes committed by the palestinians on 10/7. AP’s journalistic ethics are completely gone, that’s why they’re paying palestinian terrorists for the images of their crimes. AP corrected their initial story only on November 2.

the fact that ציון “tziyon”/“zion” and ישראל “yisrael”/“israel”, words that have been in our language, liturgy, and holy texts since before islam existed and before the romans drove us off our land and renamed it “syria palaestina,” have been twisted around to be used against us just really. hurts. especially with the way online leftists call medinat yisrael things like “isnotreal” like that is not your word to rearrange to insult the very people it describes (not just citizens of the modern state of israel but every single jewish person i.e. klal yisrael)

They think "isnotreal" is clever because they can't fucking spell "Israel" to begin with. Part of the problem is that Americans—even American Jews—tend to say "izreel." Sorry, we've just been over here giving the world Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and Joey Ramone. Also Sparks, though they won't admit it.

Eatin' Doritos and thinkin' we're just regular people. Won't make that mistake again.

Oh, here's why!

YOUR TAXES DO NOT PAY FOR ISRAELI HEALTHCARE!

Israeli taxes pay for Israeli healthcare.

The US sends military aid to Israel, but that's not fungible money. The US isn't sending dollar bills to be used to anything. It's specifically for the military. It's like a gift card. Except Israel can't use those funds to pay soldiers or buy weapons from other countries. They can only pay the US military.

Here's a good comparison: your uncle gives you a Red Lobster gift card for your birthday, right? No, because your uncle owns the Red Lobster. (This isn't my comparison, but I forgot who originally said it.)

Are you tax dollars going towards bombs? Yes. Absolutely, without a doubt.

They are not going to healthcare.

For some reason that I don't understand, the US thinks that Israel is entirely reliant on them and not, you know, a full nation with its own economy. The US isn't supporting anything in Israel but the military.

Israelis pay taxes like everyone else. And like everyone else in the rest of the world, they have universal healthcare!

You should be angry about the military aid. You shouldn't be mad about the healthcare. Be mad that our government won't give us healthcare like everyone else.

And here's a fun fact: Israeli medical care covers Palestinians. Now, is it equal? No, it's not. It's incredibly uneven. The funding for Palestinian hospitals is lacking, and the hospitals are fewer. But they can still go there and the same system covers them. In fact, the head of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, got brain surgery in Israel. They have universal healthcare, and it does cover everyone.

You can criticize Israel for a lot and you should. Absolutely criticize them for their war crimes. Hell, the article I linked above points out the inhumane conditions in Israeli jails. That's fine.

Do not blame Israel for why you, as an American, don't have healthcare. Blame your government for spending money on the military and military aid instead of universal healthcare like every other country on the planet.

Also, “the Jews are responsible for our economic woes” is literal Nazi rhetoric.

Sometimes people have nuanced takes about an issue and sometimes people are very strident on one side or the other. Then there are the people for whom an issue becomes like a drug, something they can huff, that sends them up into the stratosphere and obliterates every other damn thing that might need their attention.

War is bad, and it's bad when civilians die in wars, and it's especially heinous when children die in wars. But every war in which civilians die is not a genocide. I despise Netanyahu; he is the Trump of Israel and probably worse because he's not as stupid, and I am not at all happy about how this war is being conducted. But when you use the word genocide indiscriminately, you strip it of meaning.

Here is an internationally recognized genocide. Look at the numbers of people slaughtered and raped over the course of 3 months:

That's all I wanted to say. Thanks. I expect to get reamed out for this but I probably won't respond because I'm fucking mentally exhausted.

Bono is currently being taken to task on the internet for having spoken about The Wrong Geopolitical Conflict last night.

Yes, he's generally an outspoken guy but like everyone else, he chooses his battles. He is on record for believing that western-style liberal democracy is the best chance for the survival of humanity, so he prioritizes a country that has been fighting for two years against a major superpower while Europe and the United States (mostly the Republicans in Congress) dither.

(As an aside, when terrorists massacred a concert audience at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris in 2015, on the same night U2 were scheduled to play, nobody called them "freedom fighters." The world reacted in horror, and nobody said "prove that it happened.")

I mean, he might still talk about Israel/Palestine at some point but I wouldn't if I were him. There are already too many loud voices.

I cannot stress enough that this is NOT exaggeration they are calling for the complete abolition of trans people. And you may go "haha well. Thats just West Virginia" which first of all, fuck you for downplaying the struggle of trans people in a place just because you dont live there, and second of all its not just west virginia. This is the goal of all republican regimes across the country.

If you are not fighting against republicans with every fiber of your being at this point you are not a trans ally. If you tolerate the republicans in your family without challenging their ideas about trans people you are not a trans ally. Fight for us goddamnit or we will be culled and our blood will be on your fucking hands.

Yeah, so, fun fact:

If this goes through, even if it has a lot of resistance it'll be used as both the precedent and blueprint in every state they have power.

And if the "just give up and don't vote left/at all" people get their way, it'll become national law.

In a First Past The Post system, you have to vote for the lesser evil candidate or you get the most evil candidate. It's that simple.

Don't fall prey to the right-wing propaganda / leftist infighting that tells you not to vote for Biden/Democrats. Dems are the lesser evil and the greater evil must be stopped at all costs.

5 simple exercises to awaken dormant muscles

I appreciate this video a lot--people don't realize how important it is to start slow if you're trying to come back from a completely sedentary lifestyle, and they get really hurt as a result. Straining your muscles too much, too suddenly can land you in the E.R. and the wrong joint injury can permanently affect your mobility, so please start with absolute basics and easy stretches!

Multiple posts with over 25k notes stanning the Houthis. The fucking Houthis. Who brought back chattle slavery to Yemen, who are directly responsible for the Yemeni famine that has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, who redirect international food aid into their military faction, who have "a curse upon the Jews" on their flag, who rounded up and expelled the last few dozen Jews remaining in Yemen in 2021, who openly sex traffic Ethiopian women, who don't allow women to travel without a male guardian even for essential medical care, who torture and execute their political enemies, who have started to oppertunistically attack random ships that are neither coming nor going from Israel to fund their oppressive regime. Those Houthis. Those Houthis. Multiple posts with over 25k notes about how they are "coming through" for Palestine.

Are you people fucking insane? I wish I had a nicer way to say this but this website is literally filled with some of the stupidest and most hateful people I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. How many times do you people need to learn that some idiot on Twitter is not where you should be getting your news???

Yeah if you’re cheering for the Houthis you’re either a bad person or you’re just that stupid. Or both. And you definitely don’t care about human rights.

I really try not to post about this very much, but listen: I've reached the point where I really don't care if people on this hellsite or anywhere else hate Israel or just Jews in general. Like, go ahead and do that. You were doing it before October 7 anyway. You were doing it when I was a little kid in the 70s and waaayyy before that. It doesn't hurt me personally anymore. But you might still want to do some research on the organizations that you do choose to admire. I really don't think anyone on tumblr would enjoy survive living with the Houthis.
