GREEK MYTHOLOGY: Medusa and Athena

Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, but because Poseidon had raped her in Athena’s temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone. In Ovid’s telling, Perseus describes Medusa’s punishment by Minerva (Athena) as just and well earned. [x]
but Medusa’s “punishment” was not a punishment at all but rather a gift from the goddess. Athena could not punish Posiden for what he’d done so she made sure Medusa would never be at the mercy of a man again

Venus, goddess of love.

Often referred to as  the ‘Mazarin Venus’, this Roman sculpture dates to the 2nd century.

Venus stands nude, grasping a piece of cloth around her hips. The dolphin at her feet supports the figure and alludes to the goddess’s birth from the sea. This depiction of Venus ultimately derived from an extremely popular Greek statue created by the sculptor Praxiteles about 350 B.C. Indeed Praxiteles’ statue was so popular that, beginning around 100 B.C., many artists created variations on his theme of the naked Venus.
This statue is a Roman reproduction of one of those Hellenistic variants. In 1509 it was discovered in Rome, where it contributed to the Renaissance revival of the Classical tradition. Scholars once believed that this statue was owned by Cardinal Mazarin, advisor to Louis XIV, king of France. Although this is unlikely, the statue is still known to many as the Mazarin Venus.
During its long history, the statue has been heavily damaged. The breasts, as well as parts of the cloth, arms, and dolphin, are restored. The head probably belonged to another ancient statue. Marks on the back of the statue have been interpreted as gunshot wounds suffered during the French Revolution, although this story may be based more in romance than in fact.(Getty)

Cerberus

“ Cerberus, cruel monster, fierce and strange, Through his wide threefold throat, barks as a dog Over the multitude immersed beneath. His eyes glare crimson, black his unctuous beard,         His belly large, and claw’d the hands, with which He tears the spirits, flays them, and their limbs Piecemeal disparts.” (Dante Alighieri, Divine Comedy, Hell, IV)
So the poet would speak many years later, after Hades, the Emperor, had created his guardian.

“Be, oh my terrible beast, the announcement of which is ahead”

And Hades put him near a dark river, whose waves bathes the Underworld

The beginning

The Emperor Hades sat on his throne and looked around. There was no sound in his kingdom. Only darkness and solitude. Then, he watched above himself, and discover Gaia, and beyond, there was Ouranos, the house of his brother, Zeus. He had everything: he had the goddesses, he had the human prayers, he had the glory.

“It is time” Hades said, “to fill my palace... with souls”

Goseck Circle: The Oldest Known Solar Observatory

In 1991, inspectors from the German government took aerial photographs of a small German town called Goseck and saw something strange. On the ground, there appeared to be a giant circular ridge hidden beneath a field.  It would take archaeologists 12 years to realize that this ridge was the remains of an ancient solar observatory. Archaeologists also found the remnants of ritual fires and human bones with cut marks on them indicating that the circle was not just for star gazing but also for human sacrifice.  Curiously, a 3,600 year old bronze disc was discovered just 25 kilometers away from the site and is considered to be the oldest concrete representation of the cosmos.  It shares a striking similarity with Goseck Circle.

Temple of Demeter. Photograph by Random_fotos.

On this date in 395 CE, Eleusis was attacked by Goths under King Alaric I and the sanctuary at Eleusis was destroyed. The priests of Demeter, led by Mithras Hilarius, barricaded themselves in the Temple, and were burned alive. Christians further desecrated the area by burying their dead within the ruins, scratching crosses into the stones, and building a church nearby. In the absence of strong regional authority pirates began to raid the area, and the population of the town dwindled still further.

In 1812, when Greece was still under Ottoman control, European travellers began to visit Eleusis in search of remnants of the ancient past. Some, like Edward Daniel Clarke, undertook illegal excavations, and carried away artifacts from the sanctuary (Evans bribed a Turkish official for permission to remove a statue of a woman which is now at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England.) Systematic archaeology began later in the 19th century, and the work led to an economic boom. Eleusis eventually grew into a thriving urban center, with shipyards, oil refineries and factories. As a consequence, the city is dealing with air pollution, and contamination of the waters and sediments of the harbor.

idk anyone know how long caesar might have survived after they stabbed him 23 times? I am maybe a little too interested in details and I haven’t found information about bleeding to death yet.

Well, it’s easy: by those times, they didn’t know much about bleeding, so they actually did not know when they should die
