nah fr i've been thinking about this for a while. a few years ago when i was still in hs i kept wondering why media for black folks felt more authentic in the 90s and early 00s; i didn't understand what happened to all the black sitcoms and movies 🙇🏽‍♀️

They said racism ended when we got a Black president and then proceeded to bump monoracial Black people back out of the limited spaces that were being held in roles. STG, the number of times people said, "We have a Black president," instead of answering questions about why industries weren't getting any more diverse...

Something needs to be done about teachers who hate kids tbh

My sister is currently getting her doctorate in child psychology & education, but years ago she worked as a substitute english teacher at a high school in nyc. She spent half a year subbing for a woman who was out for surgery, and had been teaching english there for years and years. Most of the kids in this class were remedial; they had failed english before and had to retake it. Most of them hated the class, and they hated literature, because they had been made to feel unintelligent. My sister decided to introduce them to poetry, which was a little easier to digest than long form prose, and had them read Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice." And the kids loved it! They connected with it, they were spirited and engaged in class for the first time all year. They wrote their own poetry! They started seeking out and reading poetry on their own! They were all on track to get a C, B or A in that class. And then the original teacher returned and failed every single student, to "teach them all a lesson". That was the moment my sister decided to go into administration so she could hopefully prevent that sort of thing from happening. But it's difficult. Despite numerous complaints from parents and other teachers, that teacher had a job there for decades. She continued to have a job there. There are a lot of teachers like her, wielding power and taking their frustrations out on kids, especially disabled and remedial kids. And students have so few advocates in the classroom.

This post has turned into teachers complaining that this behavior is understandable because of burnout, low wages, etc and like. Ok then quit lmao. If you treat my kid like this because of "burnout" I'm gonna burn out your fucking teeth

i think the worst thing about the whole “anti-woke” culture is how it’s not only dumbing down people (folks are literally forgetting pronouns are an actual word class, an inseperable part of grammar and everyday speech) but also praising meanness and insensibility above all. it has managed to make malice and unkindness synonymous with factfulness and reason as if intelligence didn’t stem from emotions. as if feelings weren’t the very core of human beings. as if knowledge wasn’t achieved through passion, sympathy, and open-mindedness. as if the whole crux of this entire anti-wokeness movement wasn’t rooted in pure unadulterated emotion of hatred and hostility.

(I'm still mad about that italian Janelle Monae)

blaming the Japanese for this shit isn’t helping

we have to blame individual artists for refusing to draw Black features and claim they’re attractive

"ANIME FANS" can literally mean anyone anywhere that watches anime.

Nowhere did it say "Japanese people", though they do struggle with antiblackness as well, as does pretty much the planet.

Desist.

tired: mermaids are all women

wired: much like elves, merfolk are mistaken by sailors for being all women because they have long hair and are very pretty

inspired: merfolk actually have very different concepts of gender to humans because they’re an entirely different species with their own unique culture

marine scientist: what’s your gender?

merperson: what’s a gender

marine scientist: like, are you a man or a woman?

merperson: i’m merfolk

marine scientist: no, like, what’s in your pants?

merperson: i don’t… wear any? i don’t have legs?

It’s a biological fact that fish do indeed change their sex to keep the male/female ratio balanced in their school population. So this fluidity actually makes more sense from a scientific standpoint than the silly idea that merfolk are born with a strictly assigned sex like humans.

Merfolk are all canonically genderfluid and we love them for that

Human: (invites merfolk friend to a boat party with their friends)

Merfolk: oh man, there are a lot of women here. Haha don’t worry guys, I got this :) *changes into a man to keep a balance because that’s culturally polite for merfolk*

Human: (spits drink) what the FUCK

OH MY GOD

So in the presence of a ship with an entirely or mostly male crew, nearby mermaids would become female to keep the balance.

Arts vs STEM is a lie, the computer that put us on the moon was a loom of woven wires, our space suits were made by hand sewing, we need chemistry to mix paint and we need biology to raise the sheep who make the wool we spin into yarn and crochet or knit or weave and the world is beautiful

I really think one of the best things we can do as people is just get more comfortable with embarrassment. Yes, it's an unpleasant emotion, but we gotta learn to let it pass over us and move on. The longer I'm alive the more clear it is to me how much harm we do just because we're embarrassed. How many parents punish their kids needlessly and/or super severely just because the parent feels embarrassed by the child's harmless behavior? On a bigger stage, how much of fucked international intervention is started and especially continued because a nation doesn't want to be embarrassed? We have to recognize that being embarrassed does not entitle us to harm others. Alongside this though, we have an obligation to each other to lower the stakes of embarrassment. Offer grace to each other. Stop filming people in public. Stop making fun of harmless cringe.

This is also why a lot of really toxic “relationship guru’s” are famous now bc they advise people on how to avoid embarrassment in their search for partnership leading everyone to want to get the upper hand on the person their pursuing/manipulating…. Feeling embarrassed or humiliated is something u give power to and is just a fact of life u can’t really insulate yourself from it entirely and you’ll know true freedom once you accept that

No joke it’s moral of the movie Hitch

Showing how you can take embarrassing situations without being egotistical and childish about it actually makes you more charming and approachable and shows you are a person who is easy to be in relationship with
