『☨;; FOOLS GOLD 』:
“ I Could Pretend I didn’t see anything.. but then again, I would look bad when they begin to question who broke it. &. I don’t want to get in trouble for something YOU did. ”
❝ okay, what do you want so you don’t tell my father ? ❞
APHRODITE’S DREAM WAS to win the crown. it always had been, ever since she was a little girl. she wanted to be the best of all the others, sit on a throne, be doted upon like she deserved to be. and when she was a little girl, she wouldn’t have let anything get in the way of that. not her family, not another girl, and especially not a man other than the prince. he was her ticket to obtain her goal, after all. she wouldn’t risk everything for some fleeting romance.
but now aphrodite is GROWN UP, and the fleeting romance she never would have let happen had happened. at first it was nothing. it was harmless glances in the hallway, coy smiles and batting eyelashes; and then it was meeting up in her room at midnight, laying together until first light; and now it’s something more than that. it’s love that she can’t afford to feel for a guard. thankfully, someone—hebe—draws her away from the thoughts that have been eating away at her.
❝i do. is something wrong?❞
yes ! hebe wanted to quickly answer but refrained from doing so. thought aphrodite was a friend & ally, this was still a competition. anyone could be against anyone ---- betrayal was free gain. & hebe did not want that. she chose her words carefully knowing full well that she didn’t have the best way of wording things. hebe fiddles with her fingers briefly, repeating her mini practice conversation from this morning, & cants her head to the side.
❝ i saw a guard leave your room last night. ❞
the guard was a bigger deal. had it been any guard from around the castle hebe would remind aphrodite about the prince. BUT, hebe felt that she knew this guard. his face was far too familiar to not be someone she had met before. & when hebe got a better look at him. she knew that it was hektor. now hebe knew the rules. not only was the girl eliminated from the game, but she & the guard would be punished for their crime. she did not want that for her brother. he became a guard to get away from their caste, he did not need to be punished & then be without a caste. hebe would not have that. but hebe could not out right accuse aphrodite of sleeping with her brother. so she was coy with her words.
❝ do you happen to remember his name ? ❞
A SHAKING HAND runs through locks that seem just slightly less luxurious than usual. she loves hebe as more than an attendant, more than a friend; as a sister, but all she wants right now is for her to STOP TALKING. she needs a moment to think. she needs a moment to breathe. she just needs a moment. and she knows exactly how to get that moment of silence. aphrodite gets up from the couch in a whirlwind of golden silks, arms thrown out exasperatedly.
❝a girl, hebe. a beautiful, b e a u t i f u l girl. she was breathtaking. that child inherited my splendor, but it doesn’t MATTER. she came prematurely. i lost her, my beautiful girl.❞
aphrodite takes hold of the bag hebe brought, throwing it into a vase that s h a t t e r s on impact. she doesn’t realize that tears are streaming down her cheeks until they splash onto her collarbone. a sob escapes, her legs give way, and the divinity is on the floor within moments.
the usual smile that gave off such a childlike atmosphere was quickly wiped from her face. the moment aphrodite stood, pale pink lips formed a rare frown. hebe had never meant to upset the goddess. possibly the gifts were too much thought hebe before aphrodite started speaking. rather loudly. hebe’s hands remained on the dove, somewhat becoming something to keep her in reality as she heard each word aphrodite spoke. WAS. there was a child meant to be born. but they were too precious to withstand the immortal world of the gods. her niece would have been a perfect.
tears spilled from hebe’s eyes. her hands flew to cover her gaped mouth from seeing aphrodite in such a state. & she joins the weeping goddess on the floor. it all made sense now. aphrodite being distant, hephaestus spending time away from their home & avoiding other gods. hebe just wished this wasn’t the case. hebe crawls toward aphrodite, cautious with her actions, & places a gentle hand on her shoulder. hebe wants more than anything to look aphrodite in the face as she speaks, to tell her that she is not alone in this & that losing the baby was not her fault. it would never be her fault. alas, hebe stays quiet until aphrodite is ready to speak.
