Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

Charlie diligently took notes, listening intently to what he was saying. She took the redemption process very seriously.

"What kind of business do you run? Or did run? Are you still running it?" she asked, tilting her head at him.

He had mentioned needing stuff for his business in his room before but that didn't mean he was doing the same thing he was back then.

"Oh and how did you scrape up the money for the store?" she added, wanting to know the details on that.

Lobo smiled slightly. "That's a lot of questions," he teased gently.

"I think I told you before, but currently I run a few phone apps and the IT that comes with that by myself." He just never could trust another demon or hellborn to run it with him, even though it was hard work. "But before that, I did basic electronics maintenance; TVs, phones, old media players even. Anything to keep folks from having to buy a new overpriced model. It was scrappy work sometimes, but I eventually found my niche. I still check the hardware on new stuff though to make sure I can update my apps properly."

As for her last question, Lobo sighed wearily.

"I scavenged what I could. Electronics, copper, tin cans... and when that wasn't enough I stole what I could. From demons who looked like they were going to hurt someone, but still..."

He mentioned being killed before. That happened more often than not as he learned about what made demons tick and how his own new physiology worked. Demons came back from conventional methods of killing. But once Lobo finally got his hands on angelic steel, it was a different story.

Teskal's ears twitched at Carlos' warning, but her eyes stayed focused on the attacker. She prepared to dodge again, but didn't have to as the alien fell all on his own. The kwaa'tig reacted quickly, leaping forward and placing a clawed foot on him to keep him down. She held her lightsaber in both hands, pointing it straight down.

"I gave you a chance," she snarled quietly, "But you've decided to squander it."

BD-1 chirped disappointedly.

The alien groaned but, finally, seemed to decide against moving again. "E chu ta!" he hissed.

Ah, so he does speak Huttese, Carlos thought.

He chanced to check on T-4K to make sure it didn't go anywhere, and was relieved to see that it hadn't. But then Carlos heard a wailing sound coming from down the street.

"Did you call the authorities?" he asked it.

T-4K warbled and tilted its head to show that it's comms light was on next to its antennae.

"Smart boy," Carlos said with a smile as he looked back to Teskal and her subjugated.

With each acknowledgement of each role, she nodded eagerly. It truly was an exciting moment to realize just how far they've come! Even with a few souls, they made ends meet with expectations and everyone had strengths that benefited in one way or another for the hotel! Although, they had a small team for that reason... not for many members.

"Yeah! It's... well, a work in progress!" She chuckled nervously. "It's... uhm, well, we don't exactly have many members at the hotel. We really only have... two. In total. But we did set up a commercial to bring in others! It's just... well, a bit difficult to bring others who want to be better, you know?"

Carlos nodded like he understood. He didn't actually understand how many demons felt, but he could guess that a lot of them didn't even want to be better than they were. Or perhaps...

"Maybe some folks just don't know how to be better," Carlos said. "Or don't think they can be."

Take him for instance. There wasn't a day that went by where he wished he didn't die so untimely and had given himself more time to move on from his sin. Maybe if he'd led the rest of his life in servitude to other people he'd have gotten a pass.

Or maybe once you killed, that was an automatic ticket to Hell no matter how long it passed.

"Oh yes, it's very serious business. Everyone here is trying to get into Heaven and the exercises are key to that," Charlie explained.

The princess believed what she was telling him. She knew that everyone tended to dread the exercises but she did believe they were taking them seriously. It was just work and sometimes people needed a bit of a push.

"Our staff participates as well. It's important that everyone is supporting our guests," she smiled at him.

Charlie reached into her a desk and pulled out a notebook and pen to take notes with.

"Let's talk some more about you. I know we discussed that we wouldn't go over the sins of your life but we do need to go over the sins of your afterlife. Can you start by telling me about your arrival in Hell? When, where, what you first did, that sort of thing?"

Carlos' - no, Lobo's tail thumped lightly against the floor.

"Well, I told you about how I died... complete accident," he reiterated. "I don't think it was anyone's fault but my own. I've thought it over many times, how I could have done things differently but it just... I think I did everything right. It was probably just an especially bad mixture of chemicals."

Image

She didn't want to hear about his meaningless death though, did she? So Lobo went on.

"I fell in the middle of the street when I arrived here. Well, I fell onto a roof, and then rolled onto the street. You could say it was a rough landing. That was about six years ago now, I think. It took... a while to get my bearings. I was homeless for a long time. Got killed a few times before I finally scraped up enough for a store front for my business..."

"Yeah!" The Hellhound expressed her agreement with a grunt, her powerful strides matching the wolf demon's pace as they made their way to the front desk. Once they arrived, she placed her phone carefully on the surface.

Lobo hummed with consideration as he picked up the phone and looked it over.

"So the update is still pretty new, but you'd think they'd have fixed it after a week," he griped. "But... I can adjust the settings for you to make it work better than the update. However, I have another app that can help fill in the holes that the update made. What would you like to do?"
