The case with Boris Johnson proves that Westerners and Eastern Europeans (leftists in particular) need to be better at communication. Message to Ukrainians: Maybe many of us don't really want to go into the subject, but Brits have MANY reasons to disrespect Boris Johnson and want him to resign. In the end, despite the image of a "friend of Ukraine", Johnson is a bright representative of the Tories. Ask yourself: who has allowed and encouraged the export of corrupt Russian money to Britain and the rise of the Russian oligarchy - particularly in London (where Johnson was a mayor) - all these years? Maybe the left wing of Labor? But no - it was the Conservative Party that stood up for business and was only happy about Russian bank accounts and real estate in Britain!

Message to the Brits: The specificity of Britain's problems is that they are often very British. The Brits themselves - including the left - are usually not able to explain their dissatisfaction with the authorities even to people from the nearest European countries, not to mention Eastern European ones. Therefore, it isn't necessary to consider Ukrainians by default as supporters of right-wing populists.

And yes. The fact that we want a neo-liberal, populist, Islamophobic and corrupt official to remain in power because of his relatively adequate policy towards the Russian aggressor says more about the quality of European policy than about Johnson himself.

vladimir putin’s party “united russia”, the one in power rn, just launched a telegram bot for denunciations where citizens are asked to share info about “fake information about the russian armed forces” — the latest law the authorities use to imprison and put pressure on people protesting the russian invasion of ukraine. hundreds of criminal cases based on this charge are already active.

the telegram bot asks you to provide personal info such as your name and email, but obviously accepts any fake info.

wouldn’t it be just awful if hundreds of people started spamming the bot with all kind of meme shit to make the bot lag? like k pop pictures, wikipedia articles, song lyrics? i think that would be just horrible. would make it pretty hard for them to find any info on anti war activists in all that chaos. i really hope that wouldn’t happen!

As the war progressed, references to other wars waged by post-Soviet Russia became more frequent. In particular, many people remember the First and Second Chechen Wars. If you don't speak Russian, quite possibly, you havent heard about these events before at all. And this is not surprising.

The First Chechen war happened during the presidency of Boris Yeltsin, and the "progressive West" paid ZERO attention to it. While the war was going on, in 1995, Bill Clinton happily embraced Yeltsin and laughing at his speeches to reporters. Everyone rejoiced at the new "democratic" Russia (in fact, no - neoliberal and oligarchic), which was defeated in the Cold War and became another market for Western goods.

The Second Chechen war also began under Yeltsin, and continued under Putin. And although it began with the invasion of Chechen separatists into Dagestan, it was accompanied by inhuman war crimes against the civilian population by federal troops (see the Novye Aldy massacre). At this time, George Bush Jr. had already happily given his hand to Putin and was in the mood for friendship with him (as far as possible in international relations). In turn, "socialist" Tony Blair "expressed concern" about the situation in Chechnya, but agreed to attend the premiere of the opera "War and Peace" at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Bush used the ‘win the war against terrorism’ card when supporting Putin in Chechnya.

Basically the only reason they justified the war was that Itchkeria is a muslim country.

I wouldn't say so. It seems to me that there are several reasons why the West was calm about the Chechen war (especially the first phase, which took place long before 9/11):

1) US (especially them) and European countries saw in capitalist Russia a trading partner that allowed them to import their goods, had clients (oligarchs) who bought European and American real estate and luxury, and most importantly, was a field for potential Western investors and owners who could buy shares of factories that haven't yet collapsed (but the West was not lucky with this). It wasn't profitable to quarrel over the Chechnya after the Cold War.

2) Chechnya was considered one of the many internal problems of post-Soviet Russia - along with hyperinflation, high unemployment and organized crime.

3) At that time, another and larger war was going on in Europe - in the Balkans, so the Chechen wars (again, especially the First one) were simply erased from the agenda.

hard to swallow pills:

  • this is not putin’s war. both wars aimed for destruction of ukraine and wars with similar rhetoric happened long before
  • anti-putin russians are not necessarily anti-war and anti-imperialist russians
  • ukrainophobia and other xenophobia as well as anti-indigenous sentiment always were and are systematic in russia
  • it is hard to conceptualize russian culture without imperialism and colonialism as its key elements
  • even “the best of the best” of russian people are still insensitive to the current situation because of the absence of any serious anti-imperialist revision of russian history
  • decolonial and subaltern approaches towards local history and culture only begin to emerge among post-soviet societies and indigenous people of russia; and western leftists are directly responsible for ignoring and suppressing it

Ukrainian humor these days:

Translation: Fucking thank you.

Then a reply:

- maybe not a very relevant question, but why two sinks in the kitchen?

- just in case one of them will be smashed by a missile

i saw a version of this with the caption:

“The vital military infrastructure object ‘Sink’ has been denazified by a precision strike in Kharkiv”
