Translation: Yuzuru’s adjustments to his SP music after Autumn Classic

…Right after the end of his first competition of this season, the Autumn Classic International, he immediately sent an email to someone. The recipient was his trusted sound designer Keiichi Yano.  It was in order to change the layout of his SP Otoñal. A jump in the SP performed after the 1 minute 25 second mark received a 10% bonus. As the flow (of the programme) was important to him, in order to raise the points while keeping the current layout of the three jump elements one after another, he requested for the music to be arranged such that the 4T-3T would be shifted to a slightly later point in the programme.

He is absolutely particular about sound. Even for SEIMEI which he used for his FS at the Olympics, Hanyu had, after telling Yano that “I am fully aware that the things I am saying are unreasonable, but…”, issued very detailed instructions such as adding the sound of his breath at the beginning and the sound of percussion instruments at the point where he performs the ina bauer. It took 33 remakes to arrive at the completed work. Yano says that “This time too, (his instructions) were detailed, as always. It was a test of my skills.” At the beginning of October, he accepted the new version which was adjusted in units of seconds from the previous version, and prepared for competition with it.

Tracy Wilson Interview |  Y.H. 2018-19 Media Day Archive

Tracy Wilson’s media day interview, transcribed and published in Figure Skating Team Japan Fan Book. Potentially to be supplemented with other magazines’ transcriptions if new materials/ different reads come up. Tracy’s take on new season challenges, Yuzuru’s goals, his mindset and his ongoing quest to improve and improve.

Please do not repost without permission. Image belongs to Figure Skating Team Japan Fan Book and original text belong to respective publishers.

— How is Hanyu’s condition at the moment?

What I feel, is that he’s come to understand what he himself wants to do. Mainly in the technical aspect. And my role is to aid him so that we find the spots where he can exert force. The balance on his blades and so forth. In order to stabilize the technical aspect.

How is the condition of his right ankle that’s been injured?

As far as I’ve seen, I felt that the injury has not affected his performance nor created limits. Looking at the quality of his jumps, what he chooses to jump, you can see that. There were no bad symptoms to be found in his skating. So I feel it’s 100%.

— Is there any impact on Hanyu due to the rule changes this season?

I’m not sensing any in particular. Because Yuzuru has no weaknesses (laughs). I think the widening range of GOE into -5 to +5 is to his advantage. The elements he performs, even up until now — there are ones that have reached levels even beyond that. But due to the limited range in evaluation, it had also been hard to make a difference. From my point of view, this GOE rule change is advantageous to him.

Jeffrey Buttle Interview |  Y.H. 2018-19 Media Day Archive

Choreographer of Yuzu’s short programs, Jeffrey Buttle’s media day interview, transcribed and published in Figure Skating Team Japan Fan Book. The meaning of a program, its choreography, a look to the past while going towards the future.

Please do not repost without permission (sharing the link to this post is fine). Images belong to Figure Skating Team Japan Fan Book and original text belongs to respective publishers.

— When you first learned about the name of the piece during choreography, what kind of program did you want to make out of it?

It was around the beginning of summer when we talked about the music. When I learned about the title of the piece from Yuzuru, the first thing I wanted to know was what the piece meant to him. The reason is that this is something that comes out from within him. The title, “Otoñal”, means “Autumn” when translated into English. But he told me, “Something like reflection.” So we decided on that theme as the basis of the story for this program.  We also looked back upon the many things that have happened in his life, incorporating the many memories into the theme, and developed it from there.

— What are the highlights (in the program)?

Probably, where he expresses the flow of time. In the opening, beginning with the image of flipping open a photo album and looking back, he expresses the moment when you reminisce about the past. This is him reminiscing about his skating career. Also a “Journey”. And at the root of it all  — “Dream”. And then once again returning to the “Beginning”. Like that.

— Do the changes in the rules affect the choreography in any way?

Yuzuru wanted to, first, focus on solidly landing the jumps. Because if we can do that then, toward the second half, he can be more relaxed, enjoying the program itself as he performs. In terms of dealing with the rules, I think it differs depending on the skater, and I myself am open, taking his idea and helping him with it.

Yuzuru Hanyu Interview:  "Figure Skating Life” Exclusive |  Y.H. 2018-19 Media Day Archive

Aside from the interview done in a group on Day 1, Yuzuru usually grants various magazines and TV shows shorter interview sessions the next day for outlet-exclusive content. This is the exclusive portion for Figure Skating Life Vol 15. His thoughts shared on the unique arrangement of the new programs and what he hopes to achieve with them, and the Quadruple Axel were my personal highlights :)

Please do not repost without permission (sharing the link to this post is fine). MioSoloBambino had generously shared scans of the text with us for this translation. Images belong to Figure Skating Life and original text belongs to respective publishers.

Text: Yumeko Yamamoto

First off, congratulations on your back-to-back victory!

Thank you very much!

— How was it — the moment you accomplished it?

First, it was joy. All in all, what I was happiest about was, in the end, I was able to get the results in front of everyone and that’s the first thing. And then, if it’s all right to bring up my own feelings — at the Sochi Olympics, it just wasn’t a gold medal that I had gotten after bringing forth everything I had. Rather, I was all nervous, sort of feeling like “um, would I get it? Couldn’t possibly get it, with this” while waiting [for the final ranking]. Unlike at Sochi, the fact that I really laid everything out on the table, and gave a performance such that I could yell “I won!” from the bottom of my heart — that is just something I felt very happy about.

— I believe you’ve been under pressure up until this point and, having been released from that pressure, you created your new programs this season?

Huhuhu (looks pleased)

Independent repair guy on the planned obsolescence of Apple products

Louis Rossmann is an independent service technician in New York City who has repaired Apple products for years.

In this video, Rossman passionately explains how he is able to effect repairs that Apple refuses to do – notably, he can fix a common faulty sensor problem with $2 worth of parts, a repair that Apple charges $750 for (Rossman charges less than half of that, and in cheaper markets, you can get it done for as little as $75).

The laptop Rossman is fixing has a retail value of $650, meaning that Apple’s repair pricing effectively turns an otherwise perfectly good machine into ewaste. Rossman doesn’t think Apple has an obligation to fix these older machines in an economical way, but he is furious that Apple has gone to lengths to prevent him from effecting these repairs – Apple has withdrawn many of the crucial diagnostic tools that independent service techs have relied on, and they’ve also managed to get third-party diagnostic tools removed by making claims under laws like the DMCA.

Rossman uses this as a jumping off point to talk about repairs to a wide range of Apple products, including phones, and demonstrates, live, how to do them; his Youtube description includes SKUs for the tools and parts needed to do your own repairs.

Rossman speaks passionately in favor of the state-level Right to Repair bills that would safeguard all types of independent service and repair, from cars to laptops to phones. 3-4% of the US GDP comes from repair and repair jobs are good, local, middle-class jobs: recycling a ton of ewaste creates 15 jobs, but repairing it creates 200.

But wouldn't Kenshin have his own youtube channel that would be like Kitchen Conundrums??

Avatar

Since they are both fond of tutorial videos, Kaoru convinced Kenshin to make recipe videos to help her learn how to cook. Alas, she accidentally uploaded one of Kenshin’s recipes instead of her Kamiya Kasshin tutorial. And that, my friend, is the birth of Kenshin’s own Youtube channel: Cooking with Kenshin: Rurouni recipes to get you through the day.

Somebody write me this AU, I am so busy BUT I NEED IT

If Sano is ever on an epsiode, it’ll turn into My Drunk Kitchen

See, Sano would have his own Food Network type deal where he travels the world trying street food and learning recipes from locals. He’s drinking a beer and making grilled Haloumi behind someone’s garden shed. He’s got a tan and a pencil behind his ear and chili pepper paste under his finger nails.

Kenshin is static, calm, always in the same place, always safely instructing you on how to baste a chicken, his apron and shirt unstained and his kitchen spotless. He snips his basil into his marinara sauce with small kitchen scissors, Sano tears it in chunks, stirring it into a heavy pot he’s set up on a hot plate on the stairs outside a church in Sicily. Their shows are the most popular on FoodTube and they are best friends.

Imagine them being judges on a show like Master Chef.

They need three judges, so:

Megumi has a specialty FoodTube channel where she makes traditional Japanese dishes. She demystifies ingredients and techniques for the North American audience, showing you that yes, you must first wash your rice, the proper way to make a thin, rolled omelet. Her kitchen is a take on the traditional, shoji and a heavy wooden counter next to the stainless steel sink, an iron tea pot and a ceramic grater beside a modern rice-cooker. There is a proper way to prepare the ingredients, to balance the flavours. She adores having Kenshin guest star, but her series in Japan with Sano involved a lot of bickering and sake.

(And if you don’t think the three of them are Team Iron Chef, well, get right out of my AU)

Okay forgive me please but after all this I’m actually imagining a “Worst Cooks In America Japan” episode featuring Kenshin as mentor and Kaoru as one of his recruits

Yahiko nominates her, sending in photos of something stuck to the ceiling, a pot in which something has boiled down to the point of never being removed, several blackened meals, and somehow, a heating element buried in a plastic cutting board. Contestants are supposed to write an essay, but Yahiko just writes “SAVE ME”

For inspiration:

And of course, let’s not forget Shishou, who watches the shows and judges everyone at home. #shitshishousays
