Dear people at Disney and people voting on the Just Jared poll,

  • Arden Cho is Korean.
  • Jamie Chung is Korean.
  • Ashley Argota is Filipino.
  • Jenna Ushkowitz is Korean.

The only people on your Mulan dream cast list who are actually Chinese are Zhang Ziyi, Kristin Kreuk (who is half-Chinese, half-Dutch) and potentially Brenda Song (who is half-Thai, half-Hmong, which is an ethnic group living in the mountainous regions in Asia, the majority [3 million] of which live in China, though I don’t know which region her family is from).

I googled each person on your poll and found out their background within seconds. It isn’t hard to find a Chinese actress to play the Chinese character Mulan. Why is this important you ask? Let me tell you.

Stop perpetuating the idea that all Asian people look alike. You can’t just put any Asian woman in a role and say she is Chinese.

Cast the characters ethnicity correctly. If you do that, you continue to tell Asian people that you all look the same, so where you/your family is from doesn’t matter. Case in point, none of the girls on your poll look alike. Funny thing is, it’s because they’re different people, with different genes, whose families just so happen to be from the same continent, not even the same country.

If you’re going to tell me that this bad ass lady is saving all of China because she loves her family and her country, than make her, her family and her country Chinese.

Sincerely,

Someone who hopes Disney will cast a Chinese woman to play Mulan
