Welsh people who have read Howl's Moving Castle! Where in Wales do you think Howl is from?
From my research, I believe he is from the south.
He speaks Welsh fluently with Mari:
When talking to Neil, he says “There’s a welcome in the valleys”:
Miss Angorian lives on Cardiff Road:
As well as that, the Saucepan song that is featured multiple times is called “Sosban Fach”
This song, is closely tied to Llanelli Rugby Football Club, which is a rugby union club in Carmarthenshire (A county in the south-west)
Going to Diana Wynne Jones’ childhood, she was briefly evacuated to Wales during the war and she lived in Pontarddulais, a town in Swansea (Also a county in the south-west)
Going off that, I would make a guess that Howl is from South West Wales. Narrowing down to town is a bit harder, but I would probably say Llanelli.
I’m not Welsh, but growing up in NZ meant I had more British influence. I have a history degree and ADHD, with a penchant for hours long rabbit holes. And finally, this book is one of my all time favourites.
