Additional context because I know the radfems are going to get their hands on this and love it:

  • "Korea has the largest gender pay gap in the rich world, with women earning 31 percent less than men, and women still face widespread discrimination in the labor market, something the movement recognizes."
  • "In 2016, a young man murdered a young woman in a Seoul public bathroom, telling police after that he killed her because women had always ignored him. Despite the perpetrator’s own statement, police refused to label the murder a hate crime. Furious, women flocked to online feminist message boards, communities, and chat forums. This wave of digital feminism attracted women from all backgrounds, including working-class women like Minji and Youngmi, making it different from traditional Korean feminism, which was largely confined to universities, NGOs that often received government support, and other elite spaces.
  • In December of that year, as Korea’s fertility rate hovered at 1.2 births per woman (it has since slid to 0.78, the lowest in the world), the Korean government launched an online “National Birth Map” that showed the number of women of reproductive age in each municipality, illustrating just what it expected of its female citizens. (South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol won the election in March 2022 with a message that blamed feminism for Korea’s low birth rate, and a promise to abolish the country’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. ) Women were outraged by the map, observing that the government appeared to consider them “livestock”; one Twitter user reportedly created a mock map illustrating the concentration of Korean men with sexual dysfunction. Several of these digital feminists responded with a boycott to the reproductive labor expected by the state and decided that the surest way to avoid pregnancy was to avoid men altogether.
  • It was through these online communities that 4B emerged as a slogan, and ultimately a movement.

It's not just about hating men.

It's a political statement and protest for equality that specifically seeks to eliminate the way the way Korean women are used, abused, discarded within the patriarchy by their own refusal to participate in any of it or associate with anyone who benefits from it.

It's very specifically about Demanding equality from men in power by refusing to take part in the patriarchy and challenging the way it perceives women.

It's becoming a topic in the west now and so I wanted to add all this context with the addendum that this is NOT an inherently transphobic movement. It's also completely autonomous meaning there is no "leader" of it.

Each person will have their own reasons and method of participating in this movement. Anyone can join or be part of it. Yes this includes radfems and TERFs so when they eventually try to co-opt this movement as their own let's remember that they don't speak for all feminists and theyre definitely NOT the voice of oppressed Korean women who started this, and as such have No reason to put themselves in the spotlight of this movement. And we have no reason to let them.

Please do not let debt collectors play in your face.

I am super busy so I honestly don’t even know if I should be taking the time to write this, but hopefully this will help those of you who may find yourself in a similar situation.

Earlier this year I received a letter of notice from a debt collector stating that they had acquired a debt supposedly belonging to me and that, per law, I have 30 days to dispute the debt. I immediately drafted a letter and sent it to both disputing the debt and request validation of the debt as well as possible settlement arrangements had they actually been able to validate said debt

I sent this letter via certified mail. Always certified mail.

About a week after the 30 day period for them to respond expired, I received a Phone call very specifically crafted in a way to invoke urgency and panic and suggest legal action. So, naturally, I called this number only to discover this was a different company that had only just recently acquired said supposed debt. I reiterated to them that I was disputing this debt and required validation in writing.

The initial conversation went smoothly, they then called me back the next day and became aggressive. They accused me of lying and did everything under the sun to try and trick me into validating this debt as mine so that they would not have to legally send me that validation. I, knowing my rights, insisted that I was disputing the debt and that they were required to send me validation despite them claiming that they were not and that they already had and many other number of lies. I refused to continue the conversation until someone had sent me validation to which they continually responded that they would be forwarding this to their legal department and blah blah blah blah blah.

Surprise surprise, I get a phone call today from yet another company, this one claiming to be in the process of forwarding my account to the county clerks office. That was an immediate red flag as the county clerk does not handle debt disputes. They would have to hire a lawyer in my state to handle this case. I asked what company this was as they had not stated initially, and when they told me I realized this was now another company who had purchased said alleged debt and we’re trying to collect on it. this one outright illegally threatening to take me to court knowing they weren’t.

Beyond that, he tried to lie to me and tell me that a debt validation was not what I thought it was and that a validation was actually just a notice that they had purchased a debt so when I received a letter stating that they had purchased this debt that would be a validation.

That is not true! Debt companies are legally required to send you notice of an allegedly acquired debt in writing and you have 30 days to dispute and request that validation. The company then has 30 days themselves to respond and validate your debt or the debt is forfeit. This man tried to lie to me and tell me that a notice was the same thing as a dead validation in order to trick me into paying a debt that he cannot validate that I am actively disputing.

This is now the fourth company that has attempted to collect on a debt they cannot validate. They know they cannot validate this debt and instead have relied on trying to trick me into paying it. These tactics would absolutely work if I did not have a sales background and or know my rights.

And this ladies and gentlemen is why you always always always dispute a debt. The last debt I disputed was immediately pulled from collections and that allowed me to get back in contact with the original creditor and work out a payment plan so that it would never hit my credit and keep my account with them current. This debt is invalid and therefore they cannot hit my credit with it nor can I collect on it or I will sue them.

If you guys have any questions about dealing with that collectors please ask me.

I'm not surprised they gave you the long ass run around on this.

For anyone that has a debt sold to a Collections Agency do exactly what OP did and request debt validation (Google-able). Most of the time, the Original company you owed debt to did not give them your Social Security Number or your date of birth; just a good phone number and address. In order to be held legally responsible for it and to be on your credit score, they need your SSN or DOB to prove it's yours.

Usually, they're initial call will say "Hey so before we can discuss your debt of $Xxxx, we need you to verify your SSN and DOB." They're lying. That means they want you to confirm it so they can legally pin that debt to you. If you send a Debt Validation letter VIA CERTIFIED MAIL, that Collections Agency has 30 days to prove you owe the debt and that it does in fact tie to you. Since in most cases they can't, they'll send a letter saying "We don't have the necessary information to collect on this debt. It is now null and void." Send copies of that to the credit bureaus, and they wipe it from your credit report.

With OP, they did the shadiest thing possible by constantly re-selling the debt, thus starting over that 30 day response period.

Never pay a debt unless you're certain that you owe it. Especially if it's for a deceased relative. Debt collection companies are especially predatory during the grieving period asking you to "Pay down the debt" or "Clear their good name". Unless you (co)signed, don't give them anything. The debt will get written off on their taxes. If you do pay, you're locked in on that debt. You basically showed "willingness and ability to pay" which is all they need.

I gotta say... even if you *are * "certain you owe it", get it validated. If someone forgot to make sure to dot all the i's and cross all the t's and didn't connect the DOB and SSN and everything... That isn't your fault. This whole capitalistic hellscape is fucking broken. don't pay *anything* that you legally can't be compelled to.

honestly like. long term the two most useful subjects i studied in high school were probably cookery & ethics

in ethics class we learned about a view call Emotivism which is the stance that ethnical beliefs aren’t based on reason but rather on people’s emotional reactions. & I remember being like, hm, in practice I do think that’s how most ethical judgements get made, but I don’t think it should be how ethical judgements get made.

periodically I’ll ask myself ‘is this action actually causing any material harm or does it just make me feel bad?’ Because sometimes it’s the latter. it’s an important question to ask yourself, i think.

also in cookery i learned how to make a chocolate swiss roll which is great for impressing ppl

whatever tumblr users did to breaking bad is the exact opposite of what everyone did to mlp

breaking bad fans will post shit like "JESSE. we need to pick up my estrogen before the fucking pharmacy closes." "mrs white can we get mcdonalds on the way back to the meth lab" and then you look over at mlp fans and rainbow dash is committing tax fraud while fluttershy smokes a joint rolled up in her taxes

for the record i think this is beautiful. i hope mrs white has a good life and im proud of her for coming out after living so long as a man. and i hope rainbow dash and fluttershy dismantle the pony government

Someone once pointed out that fic of a series contains whatever the original series does NOT contain, because much fanfic is essentially re-imagining the same characters in different genres.

So why does the Hannibal fandom have so many Domestic AUs? Because we've already seen what these characters are like in a horror-tragedy, now we want to see how they handle living happily ever after.

Why does MLP have some of the most fucked up fic out there? because we've already seen them in an extremely wholesome world, now we want to see them in a visceral horror.

Why is the version of Breaking Bad that lives on tumblr so Silly and Absurd? because the original show was very serious and grim, now we want to see them be happy little weirdos doing slapstick.

And I also think that's beautiful. The human experience is vast, and playing with "How would Blorbo react if I put him in this situation?" is an important way of learning how to appreciate the beauty of that vastness.

I also think it's beautiful because it's DEEPLY entertaining to watch someone move characters from one genre to another like redirecting the flow of a river.

THE GOBLIN

A short comic about a mysterious creature living with the monks of a secluded abbey.

I made this comic five years ago, and it's still probably one of the most personal things I've written.

If you'd like to support more of my comics, consider preordering my new graphic novel, THE PALE QUEEN, wherever you get books.

Is it just me, or are there less comments being written on fics nowadays? I get to a fic on AO3 that was posted weeks ago, and it has like 30 kudos but no comments yet. It happens more and more now. Why is that?

I don't like it.

I don't know how to comment without giving feedback and apparently loads of people don't want that. Yes, I know, I could just say sth like "loved it" (and I know first hand the warm and fuzzy feeling that gives the receiver). But that doesn't express what I'm thinking because what I'm thinking is "I thought this bit was very good because reason, I thought this other bit was maybe too long, this third bit confused me, and that twist was really well prepared". And it seems that many people don't want to hear that which is very VERY confusing to me. So the only thing to do is leave kudos.

i want all the feedback. give me it.

Actually I think that is a good place to start, when writing a comment, maybe just skip the not-so-positive stuff? So "this bit was good because reason" and "this twist was really well prepared" are good things to put in a comment. Just skip the things you DIDN'T like so much - keep them to yourself. And then you have a good comment.

When it comes to comments, always concentrate on the positive (unless someone has outright stated that they're looking for constructive feedback).

Agreed. In my early fandom days people would outright state "concrit welcome," which I would say is the only time it's appropriate to offer criticism on the technical aspects of the story. Rarely do I see authors looking for that kind of thing currently.

Fandom is not a creative writing class. This is not a workshop. Fics can be posted in varying degrees of polished/finished draft, from "no beta we die like x" to fics that have been painstakingly edited before posting. Some fics are written to completion before posting, some are posted bit by bit as the author figures the story out.

The role of commenter is far more fan and cheerleader than critic. Positive comments on the technical aspects of a story are always welcome, obviously, but once a fic is posted, it's generally more discouraging and even hurtful to have someone point out what didn't work for them. If what doesn't work grated enough that you feel the urge to comment on it, better to just stop reading.

One exception I can think of is if there's an easily fixed factual error or glaring typo? And even then, I usually state clearly in the notes that I'm open to corrections on that kind of thing (ex: I got the name of the frontman wrong when writing about characters attending a concert, and I was SUPER grateful to have that pointed out).

In general, unless the author has made it clear that they want constructive criticism or corrections, stick to the positive. Asking about an author's thought process behind certain choices is fine, so long as it comes from a place of curiosity rather than complaint.

I'm sure there are authors out there who don't mind critical comments, but in my experience, they're in the minority. If you are one of those authors, make that clear in the notes or tags of your story. Otherwise, readers should assume the default preference is positive/encouraging comments.
