Café Society fic by lizamezzo art by orlofsky (warning for alcohol and innuendo; also, illustrations on this fic are throughout the text!) **** “I am not going to Momus.”

“But —“

“No.”

“Musichetta, my love, the plan—“

“Was made by you, not me.  I’ll prepare a hero’s welcome for your return, but my foot does not cross the threshold of Café Momus.  Especially not in these shoes.”

Joly cast his eyes down.  They were red, a deep-dyed scarlet, with sweetly worked embroidery and delicate heels that had long since left their precise imprint upon his heart.  Musichetta, in these shoes, was not to be questioned.

This is the highly ridiculous thing I wrote for the Midsummer Mini Mis Fest exchange, in which Joly and Bossuet take Grantaire to Café Momus for his birthday and they encounter the four Bohemians from La Bohème.  Also starring Jean Prouvaire, Courfeyrac, Bahorel, Musichetta, Floréal and Irma Boissy.

(I couldn't edit under the Read More, so I have to beg your pardon for a couple of typos and at least one flat-out mistake.  I'll have to post a final edit at some point...)

This was my first fanwork event, so many thanks to pilferingapplesfor making it happen!  This was also my first time working with an artist in this context, and I can vouch that orlofsky is both an amazing artist and a fantastic person to work with.  Clicking the Read More will bring you face to face with the marvels they wrought; you can imagine how blown away I was when those pieces of beauty landed in my inbox.  Seriously, their art is made of pure weapons-grade awesome, and my hat is perpetually off to them.

Many thanks to those who have said kind things!  I will seriously run around tumblr high-fiving everyone who even takes the time to read this.  (Hugs are also on offer, if desired.)

I was about to be irritated at a shitty "kids' education" website on 1770s clothing but then I learned that there's a staymaker buried at King's Chapel and now I'm just delighted to know the gravesite of a clothing worker from that era and I want to take him flowers

I WAS TODAY FUCKING YEARS OLD WHEN I LEARNED THAT THOMAS PAINE WAS A MASTER STAYMAKER?!?!

THE COMMON SENSE GUY. BASICALLY MADE BRAS. FOR LIKE 8 YEARS OF HIS LIFE COUNTING THE APPRENTICESHIP

imagine if you're like. a random lady in England. and you found out that the guy you bought a support garment from one time is now publishing seditious pamphlets in the colonies

things he supported: -sedition -titties

there's a cherry blossom tree in DC that keeps blooming every year even though it shouldn't and the park service keeps thinking it's dead and then it keeps blooming! well they're removing a lot of trees to rehabilitate the area and they've said it's finally time for stumpy to go and they're going to mulch it and use the mulch to enrich all the other trees so it can help everything else keep going. and they're also going to plant spliced little pieces of it all over so that stumpy can live forever and this is genuinely sending me into a spiral

STUMPY MY BELOVED!!!!

For added context on what rehabilitating the area means: there are structural issues with the Tidal Basin seawall that cause flooding like this independent of rainfall. Big portions of the sidewalk in Stumpy’s section are regularly submerged, which is bad for the land and the trees themselves, not to mention an accessibility issue for visitors.

It’s sad that Stumpy and many other trees in the area will need to be cut down, but it will ensure the continued survival of the other trees in the area, and Stumpy himself will live on in his cuttings!

I believe Stumpy will be taken to the national arboretum and his clones will return to the tidal basin after the rebuilding.

Someone left him a bottle of bourbon as an offering.

The Japanese Embassy came to pay him honor this week.

Stumpy and his cohort are part of the original gift from Japan more than 100 years ago, and many have lived this long bc the National Parks takes care of them. Normally the trees live about 40-50 years.

Taking cuttings is a great idea, and not just for affectionate reasons. Stumpy has survived conditions that have killed most of the other trees around him. At high tide, that area is regularly inundated with river water, as you can see from the photo above. Most of the cherry trees in that area died because their root systems drowned, like overwatering a plant. It’s a terrible place for a fruit tree. Yet Stumpy survived.

He survived being broken, losing his crown of leafy branches that provided him with food via photosynthesis. He just has one or two branches left, but they still blossom every spring.

And, as previously noted, he has survived to a greater age than many of his species.

Stumpy can’t be transplanted because he’s too fragile — the trunk is hollow, the heartwood rotted out, and he would break while being dug up. Even if the trunk didn’t break, trees get “transplant shock” when they are moved, and it’s unlikely a tree as old as Stumpy would survive this.

But they’re absolutely right to take cuttings from this never-say-die supertree. Little not-so-stumpy Stumpys everywhere are what DC, and the world, need!

It's not a full week, but...

The 200th anniversary of Lord Byron's death is coming up next month.

April 19, 2024 (your local time), let's take over the Romanticism hashtag. Fic, meta, fanart, memes, forgotten arcane rituals, translations, poetry, research, mood boards, RECOMMENDATIONS for your favorite lesser known Romantic works, etc.

Rules are for classicists, let's have fun!

“This was the most physically taxing of all the film because of the lightsaber duels. Everytime I wasn’t shooting, I was rehearsing. Something that took weeks and weeks to shoot, even though it only lasts a few minutes on film. So it taxed me to the limit.”

Important relevant thoughts courtesy of twitter

I studied fashion for years solely to answer this question:

-Fitted t-shirts (notice how his collar and sleeves are snug against the body and not loose while also not being too tight; chest/shoulder/torso measurements really matter)

-Flare bottom/bell bottom/wide fit jeans (loose leg jeans emphasise a smaller waist, which combined with fitted t-shirts gives a lot of 70s dudes the illusion of the ideal powerful twink body)

-Medium length hair and bangs/fringe and feathered hair for masc people (pulling the hair back and away from the face emphasises angular facial structure and gives masc people a mature look, while bobbed haircuts that frame the face and cover the forehead gives a younger look; hair feathering created a feel of energy and brightness)

Voila, you have a good 70s boy right there if you follow the above instructions.

I went all through the notes to find the post I wanted to reblog and boom here it is. Also this training is for The Empire Strikes Back, which was filmed in 1979-80 and released in May of 1980. The person in the notes who said “I’m glad bell bottoms didn’t cut back” is a bit mistaken because they did come back somewhat, as “extra wide boot cut flares”. I adore his scruffy hair here, and his cowboy boots with heels and his arrrrrrrrms.

We’re all just not gonna mention he did all the Star Wars training in jeans huh? King.

genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back

I will make a longer post about this later but I got access to the library's vault and asked if they had any rare Arthuriana and I am Indiana freaking Jones right now and I have this in my hands

I am happy, ancestors, that I sought out the same stories of King Arthur that you thought worth recording in Yiddish. I am honored that I hold this volume from the 16th century that you printed in my hands.

I am sorry and ashamed that I cannot read it.

My father looked into this amazing text held by the Philadelphia Library, which appears to be a collection of King Arthur stories translated into Yiddish as part of, of all things, a series teaching Yiddish to Protestants. (He also says not to feel too bad about not being able to read it, it's printed in an unusual font known as Women's Yiddish.)

The German portion of the title page says:

A beautiful story Of King Arthur's Court. How he lead his kingdom And what habits he had. And about the famous Knight Wieduwilt The argumentative hero So beautifully put into rhyme. When you read this Your heart will be joyful.

My friend wrote his thesis on this story, Viduvilt.

The title he chose was “Why Is This Knight Different?”
