Last year I texted @neilcicierega and said “You have 4 days to find a way to mash up All Star with Last Christmas.” (4 days before we were to hop in a van with @harryandthepotters again) He replied “EASY” and then didn’t say anything else about it.
The next day I picked him up and he simply handed me a flash drive without saying what was on it. It contained this.
Perfect.
I put it on in the van without telling @truegoof and @joedegeorge what it was, and then worried we were going to get into a car accident from the amount of laughter coming out of them.

THE 25 DAYS OF LAST CHRISTMAS
Day 1 - Wham!
Before we started our journey I was the only one who actually liked this song, but my other 7 vanmates suffered through this version to give us our baseline. As we got deeper and deeper into the covers (most of which were horrible) everyone started to appreciate Wham’s version more. By the end of our weekend I started to feel kind of uneasy whenever Last Christmas /wasn’t/ on.
Our favorite line of this song is undoubtedly the whispery “Happy Christmas!” bit, and we gave extra stars to people who used it more than once. Someone could make a version with just the whisper looping over the entire song and we’d probably love it.
Having listened to just under 500 versions of this song I feel pretty well versed on it, and I’ve gotta say, though some of the covers I’ll be posting over the next few weeks are really good, I still find myself needing to go back to Wham’s from time to time.
We gave this version 4 out of 5 stars.

10 years ago today we went to see @harryandthepotters play a show in Harvard for the Deathly Hallows release and I still think about this day a lot. After the show we went to the Borders (RIP) midnight release in our hometown where a lot of people knew who we were and it super freaked me out. (We had done exactly one Potter Puppet Pals live show at that point so things were still pretty new here.) People were singing The Mysterious Ticking Noise together in the store which was incredibly surreal but also exciting. Sometimes I can't believe it has already been 10 years and other times I can't believe it has ONLY been 10 years, but today i'm just feeling very thankful for everyone who has been involved in this magical journey with us one way or another.
I mashed up the old 2005 video of The Ultimate Showdown (of Ultimate Destiny) with our 2009 full band studio recording out of boredom yesterday. Enjoy!

A month later and I'm still running off of those good Yule Ball vibes. One thing that I've been thinking about a lot as tomorrow approaches is how important it is to invest time in yourself. Life is frequently chaotic and stressful, and I think taking the time to do something for yourself now and then is the only way to get through it. I missed out on a fun event last night due to trying to be “responsible” or whatever, and today I'm wishing I had tried harder to make it work. Of course not everyone can go to the Yule Ball and this isn't specifically about the Yule Ball in particular, but rather that when an opportunity presents itself for you to do something fun you should try to make it happen if you can because we need those fun and happy moments to help us survive the darker days. Today my light guiding me through the impending darkness comes in the form of these Yule Ball memories, and I am so thankful to everyone who helps make these shows so special every year.
