When she shows her teeth, she isn’t smiling.

Sue is a creature that refuses to let be understood. Her nature is nothing natural. Scientists and psychologists alike have tried to pry her open, to dig inside and rewire to her be sensible, so she could be controllable. They have all failed. But there are some things that they have learned:

She was taught how to talk when she was found as a child. She almost never talks.

Do not pity her. She is not a tortured soul. She certainly doesn't care about ours.

You give her food, and she speaks to her mother for you because you ask nicely. You do not barter with her. You do not command her. Make her think she is in control. The consequences of not doing so could be loss of limb. Or life.

(Her teeth are sharp and her jaw is strong and her nails are claws that can break your ribs apart.)

Don’t try and cage her. She will cause of fuss, and her mother will get angry. The guests will notice and ask what’s wrong. You don’t want the government to find out about her, do you? You don’t want to deal will all that paperwork and all those cover-ups all over again. So let her wander where she likes. Pretend she works here. Layer her in jackets and give her gloves and tell (ask) her to cover the scales and the feathers and the claws, and to never ever smile.

No one knows why she goes where she goes. Sometimes to other enclosures, sometimes through the park shops. Do not tranquilize her - unless she starts to salivate.

(Remind her that she has plenty to eat. She sometimes needs reminding.)

She can show affection, but only through low croons and grunts. She will only accept touch from her mother. She does not like human contact. Do not engage under any circumstances.

Give her a hunt sometimes. She loves a good hunt.

                    Just don’t become the prey.
