The one thing I will give ESO's elf designs is that I like that you can't see much of their sclera. I like to think they do the whale eye thing dogs do when they are uncomfortable

Salah’s update as of 4/12:
“My brothers and sisters, with Allah’s blessing and your help I almost gathered the money for evacuation (25/30k). You have helped a father’s struggling mind to mobilize and make a survival plan for the family, buy the food and cook to survivive day after day, and gave me hope for escaping the horror in time. If you are still supporting me, please share today with 3 friends and donate according to your power. May Allah reward your souls!”

hi everyone! my name is Hannah, and my friends and I have been organizing to help this father, Salah Abu Odeh, evacuate his three children, wife, and mother from Gaza.

  • Alaa (6 y/o) is a true sweetheart and the big sister of the family
  • Rital (4 y/o) is the middle child and full of curiosity
  • Arkan (2 y/o) is still a toddler, but already wears the biggest smiles (and deeply affected by the war)

Before the war, Salah was one of the first game designers in Gaza. The family has been on the run from their home in Beit Hanoun for nearly six months, facing constant starvation and suffering.

Salah’s mother is elderly, with no access to her medication due to the Israeli siege/the collapse of the health system. She is expected to need open-heart surgery if they escape.

My friends and I have been in contact with Salah’s family on the ground and can personally verify this fundraiser.

Please, join me in helping rescue an entire family from this ongoing genocide.

This family is SO close to meeting their goal.

You can play an active role in saving human beings from suffering. This is an invitation.

Please donate whatever you are able (I gave around $30). Even if you can only give $1–this family will be grateful for it. I will be grateful.

Like, share, and repost!

Misread the science gender skewing post and thought you were talking about Viera and Hrothgar instead of Viera and mi'qote. I thought miqote had normal gender distribution they just. Had a loooot of Tias out and about doing their thing

well seekers do tend to send anxious tias that are not willing to try for nunh in all directions, so there's that

hrothgar actually have the opposite thing of having very few females, which from my cursory reading seems to be just be like some birds that have the females fight over males, mate with a bunch, lay their eggs, and then fuck off to do it again while the males care for the young, which socially selects for more males than females. with big litters this might work!

genetically it seems to be quite a rarer thing than the other way around, i assume because of the risk if something lowers the population. i suppose the option of them being like clownfish and the strongest one turning into a female when needed is also an option. bit rare in mammals though!

went looking into skewed gender ratios and found 2 fun options

one is already a mammal, so that's a bonus:

Wood lemmings produce about three times as many female as male offspring. This is due to an unusual genetic system where they have two different types of X chromosomes, the normal X and a mutated X*. Females with that mutation on their X*-chromosome inhibit the male determining effect of the Y chromosome. This leads to three genetic types of females: XX, X*X and X*Y and one genetic type of males XY. The X*Y females are fertile, but only produce X* ova, which means they only produce female offspring. It is not fully known the extent to which nature balances out the differences in the adult population, but sampling studies seem to suggest males do make up as little as 25% of the population at equilibrium. Females with abnormal genotype (XO, XXY, X*YY) occur regularly. The high female sex ratio may be an adaptation against local mate competition and inbreeding during population low points.

if you consider that both viera and miqo'te send their men into the Wilderness Thunderdome, that would allow only the hardy and lucky to survive, giving us the 20% male ratio. seems like a fun option to work with!

now

the other occurs in insects, but considering we've got mad scientists and animate plants and magic floating about, this is easily solved:

These bacteria can infect many different types of organs, but are most notable for the infections of the testes and ovaries of their hosts. Wolbachia species are ubiquitous in mature eggs, but not mature sperm. Only infected females, therefore, pass the infection on to their offspring. Wolbachia bacteria maximize their spread by significantly altering the reproductive capabilities of their hosts, with four different phenotypes: - Male killing occurs when infected males die during larval development, which increases the rate of born, infected females. - Feminization results in infected males that develop as females or infertile pseudofemales. - Parthenogenesis is reproduction of infected females without males. - Cytoplasmic incompatibility is the inability of Wolbachia-infected males to successfully reproduce with uninfected females or females infected with another Wolbachia strain. This reduces the reproductive success of those uninfected females and therefore promotes the infecting strain.

from what i'm reading it varies by species but hey, it seems to be able to induce resistance to a bunch of viruses and illnesses in its hosts, so it's not all bad!

if you want to join the ixal in being horrified about what the allagans got up to with your people, this is the one for you. also the name amuses me

anyway i'll be thinking about these

I feel like a lot of people don’t quite get what a butler is. The role tends to get rounded off to ‘male servant’ pretty regularly in some media, whereas actually butlers are typically not just servants but chief servants. The butler was generally in charge of either all male servants or just all servants, period, in the household of an aristocrat or other very wealthy person. This meant that butlers have often been fairly powerful and influential people, and sometimes even had a manservant or two of their own.

(Also, fun fact: Mary Roberts Rinehart, the early 20th century mystery writer who is widely credited with popularizing the whole ‘the butler did it’ trope was nearly murdered by one of her own servants, a chef whom she had passed over for promotion to butler. He came at her with a pistol, but it jammed, allowing her chauffeur time to wrestle it away and restrain him.)

You didn’t answer the key question things brings up: did she popularize the trope before or after the would-be butler tried to kill her?

according to wikipedia, before

There’s something glorious about the fact that the author who popularised “the butler did it” had a servant who a) failed to become the butler and then b) failed to do it.

If he’d been butler material, he’d have finished the job.

*places an orange just outside a fairy ring to see what comes out* science is more of an art than a science

*the orange grows legs and skitters away*

Fascinating results *places a banana in the same spot*

*clawed hand reaches out of the ether and drags it into the ring, leaving ragged claw marks in the soil as it disappears, back into the ether from whence it came*

“let’s go to the extreme.” *places a pineapple in the same spot*

Real scientists would keep putting an orange in the same spot to make sure the results are consistent before moving on to other fruits or different spots.

The only valid response to this post.

We’re working up the complexity levels of fruit until we feel there is enough evidence to support the judicious placement of a volunteer twink

You sit down, we haven’t seen what’s happened to the pineapple

You said Mitr'a could make anybody a good cup of coffee and yet I cannot imagine him thriving as a barista. Under what extreme circumstances could he end up working at a coffee shop?

Avatar

either an incredibly improbable sequence of events leading him to opening one in some sort of cursed coffee shop au, though i can't really think of anything dire enough,

or more probably it's part of a quest. maybe replacing someone for a shift. he'd do that. how much the clients would enjoy the experience depends on how tolerant they are to getting their tits blown off by a level 90 culinarian coffee in exchange of being served in complete silence by a vaguely hostile guy who will not entertain requests he thinks are stupid

what he does do when in a good mood is appear from the rising stones kitchen with drinks according to preferences. thancred, tataru and y'shtola do seem like coffee kind of people

Avatar

@shilohta the final challenge of the coffee lover: trying to find my wol outside of wol uniform. this feels a bit too much like nightmare difficulty you know? i am however seeing a scene of a guy bemoaning not being to able to find this legendary coffee brewer while mitr'a is waiting in line for a delivery of something else, boredly looking right at him. many such cases

on the second question, the diagram of people who could, with some effort, convince him of such a thing and also *would* is a circle and it's called tataru. so far she's been distracted by her sharlayan expansion endeavours so he's been safe. so far
