                                      despite the fine particles of sand, now floating to the floor to contaminate his lab;                                       despite the obvious emphasis on research and how it did not seem to factor in that said research would not progress were it to be interrupted with such frustrating frequency;                                       despite, perhaps most frustratingly of all, the stony facade the Cuarta would insist on presenting rather than any real reaction. 

            "My research," the Octava had to hold himself back from snapping, "will unfortunately be slowed even further, due to the contamination of my sterile laboratory environment by the filth you have tracked in with you." 

            "You may report this to Aizen-sama, who requests my progress on my research," he parroted, turning away once it became clear he could not suppress a victorious smirk. Months of notes out the window were small sacrifice, compared to the victory of one up on Aizen's precious pet. 

Her expression would not change except for a slight shift in her right brows position, allowing it to raise up in a faint arch. Previously tilted head would tip towards the opposite side of its original placement, eyes expressing a simple display of boredom. “Ah—my mistake,” she replied with an underlining tone of almost annoyance.

What a shame? A shame indeed—having to deal with this perfection-crazed subject. Irritating as well—how quaint.

His words were met with nothing but a flat stare, lids lowering halfway over her eyes as the corner of her lips briefly tugged down slightly into a almost frown.

"Apologizes," Nemu began, her tone heavily implying that she honestly wasn’t apologetic at all and that she really stopped caring to disguise her tones at this point in her unwanted conversation with the Arrancar male. "—but I don’t see how any of my autonomy from Mayuri-sama concerns you,”

☣ —— His lips pressed themselves thin, eyes crinkling slightly in what could have been either self-deprecating amusement or irritation; he did not wear unpretentiousness well, and it was evident in the downward curl of his lips that the tone with which he was being spoken to was most certainly not appreciated.

           "Such a pity," he began, then stopped abruptly, turning nearly all the way away so he would not have to look at the walking experiment head-on.

           "I do not usually put myself in the habit of being civil to the enemy -- "                       "And now I see why." 

           She could have just answered the question, he mused bitterly, and saved them both the trouble of a conversation so quickly soured. A smile -- no, a rictus -- plastered itself over his features then, expression going from spiteful to sardonic in a second. No use wasting time, then.

           "The last I had seen of you, you were better at holding your tongue. Funny, that." He did not offer to relieve her of it explicitly, but his hand did creep towards a scalpel. 

“‘Course ya should be. It’s easy not talkin’ ‘bout somethin’ that doesn’t exist.”

"I’ll repeat myself one more time since you’ve probably managed to drug yourself and can’t understand half of what I’m sayin’. Quit changin’ the hallways. Don’t do it and I’ll make my own exit after showin’ ya what makes me two ranks higher than ya."

☣ —— Hands raised in surrender, he cast his eyes downward before bringing them quickly back up, equal parts submission and defiance. "It is just so easy to blame others for our own lack of sense of direction, isn't it? I have better things to do than lead you in circles, especially when you will do it yourself without my help."
