He stood silently at the door a moment, watching. The blonde was sitting indecisively at the mirror, tugging and pulling at her hair, trying to get the silky tendrils to conform to her will. There was a small smile on the boy's face as he saw her frustration grow. The girl had never really been satisfied with herself, which was silly to him. She was beautiful.
Finally, he lifted a knuckle to the door. "Knock knock," Jeremy mimicked with a grin. The sound startled the girl as she looked up in the mirror to catch the sight of his face. An embarrassed expression spread over her cheeks. "You decent?"
"No," she sighed. "Are you kidding? My hair is not cooperating.." Her eyes returned to her own image in the reflective glass and scowled, as if the scolding look would somehow fix her crisis.
"Jeremy Gilbert, you'd like that, wouldn't you?"
"I'm just saying! These parties are always boring! And when they're not boring, it's cause someone's dead." His words did little to sway her annoyance. "Come on, Asa. I said I'd go with you and I will! Can't blame a guy for trying. Your hair looks lovely," he chuckled sheepishly, leaning down to kiss the top of her head.
Asa shook her head, looking back to the mirror. She resumed playing with her hair, a pout on her lips. "Why did you agree to go in the first place if you really hate parties that much?"
When she asked that, his eyes crinkled. Removing his hands from her shoulders, Jeremy stepped back and around the chair, moving to lean against the dressing table. He tilted his head as his eyes searched her face. "Why? Because you rescued me from that Christmas party all those years ago. One of the few happy memories of my childhood."
Asa glanced up at him in shock, a smile now beginning on her own face, matching his. "You remember that?" She watched as a hand stretched out in her direction.
"How could I forget?"
