Klavier had just finished his story when the waiter appeared to take their order. He placed it - an americano and one of the cakes of the day - before turning his attention back to Mia, who seemed genuinely interested in him. Not that kind of interest that his fans showed him, no. She really wanted to know more about him, as a prosecutor.
Yeah, Kristoph wasn’t exactly happy. My father was surprised too aber he didn’t mind much. He had my brother to take over the family business, after all.
With the menu taken away by the waiter Klavier had nothing left for him to play around with, so he moved back to doing what he always did when his hands started to get restless. He fiddled around with one of the many rings on his finger.
Nun, you have to know, my parents died in an accident when I was just a teenager. Kristoph was an adult already, back then, after German Law. So he got custody for me.
He took over my father’s company at first, but he figured out that staying in our hold home wasn’t good. Neither for him nor for me. He knew about Themis Legal Academy and thought it was a good school for me. And he too always wanted to go to America, for a few years maybe, to get some experience.
He decided to make our stay a permanent one. Getting me as far away as possible from Berlin so that I could heal properly. Losing my mother… it had been hard on me. I have struggled with their death. I wasn’t exactly happy about coming here at first aber it turned out to be a very good idea in the end. We both are quite happy with how things are.
Mia’s eyes widened as she listened to Klavier talk. She knew all too well the pain of losing one’s parents and having to comfort and raise a younger sibling. Under the table, her restless fingers plucked at the end of her scarf as she listened to him talk about his brother. Shame filled her as she thought about how she had abandoned Maya to become a lawyer.
“I’m sorry for your loss. It sounds like Kristoph did a phenomenal job as your guardian, given the circumstances. Losing your parents at that age is really rough. I’ve been there. Again, my deepest condolences to you and Kristoph.” She gave him a rueful smile, but didn’t volunteer any more information. Mia wanted to learn more about the man sitting across from her, and she didn’t find much purpose in talking about herself.
“Forgive me if you’ve mentioned this before--my memory isn’t what it used to be--, but did you meet your band mates during your time at Themis?”
