This first iteration of RETURN TO FORM allowed audiences to directly experience ephemeral objects pivotal to the company’s history. Featuring videos, artist books, garments, and a photo collage, this exhibition overviews methodology, process, and performance. Collaborators assembled and edited behind-the-scenes notes, text, and interviews for video pieces created by Ernest Baker, Mary John Frank, and Alexsa Durrans that take viewers through the visual imagery of past productions. The garment designs emphasize the collaborative nature of the company and illuminate ideas from the company’s twenty-year history of effort and teamwork. RETURN TO FORM will expand from this initial gallery installation into a three-year project to document the story of our work as INSIDE | FORM, a published book and gallery event presented in the 2024-2025 Season at Gibney Center. Funding for RETURN TO FORM provided to Sidra Bell Dance New York by Gibney, the National Performance Network Documentation & Storytelling Fund, Yaddo, Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Yaddo Access Grant, University of the Arts Faculty Academic and Development Fund, CalArts Dance and NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
