Please meet  Kenneth, Agnes, Donald, Gladiola, and Ephelia.  Four beautiful Radical Faeries who generously let me let me take their photograph and make a small film in 2008. Agnes narrates the film, she explains her experience as a Faerie. "Fairies are all very different individuals. So it’s very hard to say this is what a radical radical faerie is. When I was little people would call me a fairy and it was considered a negative thing but I never disliked fairy so it was like a reclaiming of a name..like being called a faggot and saying that’s cool thats who I am. We use to get the rejects from the drag community and that was like you know they were not perfect. The only reason the faeries are sort of interesting today is because we are the group that accepted transgender people. I might decide I want tits but I’ll want three tits and when I perform and use breast things I usually throw them In the audience.  The idea is I really don’t take this seriously but It’s fun…I am playing with gender… I am the one making the rules. We dont have an agenda so we are accessible to people. We are not asking for money we are not asking for anything. I got to kind of reclaim the self that was innocent. When I went back and I knew…its something that I didn’t think about. my life had gone on. who would want to be interested in your child hood. thats kind embarrassing and I reclaimed that and I realized that I was always a fairy I just never knew it. In 2015 we went to Detroit to capture the spirit of that city for @heromag.  I was lucky enough to meet Detroit legend Keith Matthews, who’s bold hair sculptures regularly steal the show at the legendary HAIR WARS extravaganza. Keith is a beautiful and humble man. He welcomed us to his studio with open arms, allowing me to document his creations worn by his daughter and her friends. His materials of choice include foam, pipe tubing, and Pringles cans. “I call my method ‘commercialized fantasy,’” he says of his designs, which have incorporated everything from Tootsie Roll candy to classic 45 RPM records and even his own moniker—in bold, glittering fonts. In 1984 I joined a synchronized swimming team. We would practice twice a week learning a combination timed to Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. This sport is no joke, it is not easy learning how to look graceful and effortless while holding your breath, smiling, and spinning ones legs and hands like an egg beater, to keep you afloat. I didn’t make it past that first season. Perhaps it’s those early experiences that shaped my admiration for teams. It’s not easy to remove the self for the group. Within a team one may excel in part, but not at the expense of the whole. We went to UC Santa Barbara to photograph their waterpolo team in 2013. I photograph teams because they peak my curiosity, I like exploring how a group of people come together to achieve a common goal. We photographed them for a few days, documenting their sport and personal rituals. Production & casting - @stephanieporto @thepullinc https://www.instagram.com/p/CI6OGFUBJGO/?igshid=hqr73m19p6mp

As part of my exploration on American youth culture for “We Are Experienced” I shot teens in at Dunes Park in Rhode Island. I was there to document “summer family vacation”. Since the kids spend every summer together, they formed their own tribe and had their own rituals. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIoRFJ8BC4f/?igshid=s8mr8yph2y7t

A quinceañera is an important hallmark in the youth notion of ‘coming of age for the Latinx community. Part birthday party, part rite of passage, at 15, it symbolizes maturity and entrance into adulthood.  As a kid I attended many Bat Mitzvah, (same idea of coming of age for Jewish people) but never a quinceañera. Creating images for my book, “We Are Experienced”,  afforded me the opportunity to see new worlds, so I went to El Paso, Texas in 2007 to shoot Carla on her big day. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIlt--uhmxO/?igshid=1awlyia3620tr

At the end of last year @harryeelman, @kevintvu and I traveled to New Zealand to work with creative directors, @cr8ive and @steveqchan on Amazon’s new show, The Wilds. The series which features all female leads, tells the journey of 8 girls who get stranded on an island. The series is complicated and there are twists and turns of course, but in the end we watch how teenage girls cope, and witness the beauty and struggle as they learn to live in their circumstances. And as we dig deeper and invest more time with our girls, we realize that being a teenage girl today can be as hard as surviving on a desert island. When I took these photos representing diversity in body size back in 2003, I was considered progressive, I’m still shook by that ridiculous notion. I was always captivated by the breadth of beauty in those that I shot. But idealized beauty was so limited and women were confined to such narrow ideas of what was considered attractive. In the past 17 years, we have made great strides towards shifting perspectives and enforcing inclusivity, visibility. All Bodies, of every persuasion, deserve to be seen, appreciated, shown as the embodiments of beauty that they are. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIQxtXeByA6/?igshid=8xau2p82pm18

Twiggy was a stand out dancer at the Animae Festival in Kansas City, Kansas in 2008. He invited me to his home where he lived with his adopted parents who were very conservative and didn’t understand this queer raver. #Out100, it’s @JanelleMonae . For the cover of @outmagazine “We are in the middle of watching tables turn, boomerangs booming back, and the rooster coming home to roost,” she tells @tracyegilchrist of this year’s cultural reckoning. “White supremacy and racism, and those who abuse their power, we’re seeing the people tearing it down...to see something new.” 👗@seanknight 💇‍♀️ @vernonfrancois 💄 @jessicasmalls⠀ https://www.instagram.com/p/CHvADfsAUtE/?igshid=4nfzvyv9o4jp
