Afterwards went to the parade of their troops. Returned to the yacht for 20 minutes to change clothes and went to their palace for a large dinner. Returned and went to their pavilion. There sat with them for a while. Returned and left at 11h 20m. Sat until 12 o’cl. with dear N.N. Everything was all good. Wonderful weather. Photo : Tatiana Nikolaevna, Anastasia Nikolaevna, Elisabeth of Hesse, Olga Nikolaevna and Maria Nikolaevna in Wolfsgarten, fall 1903.
“The autumn of 1903 saw the Imperial couple and their children at Darmstadt. Half the royalties of Europe were collected there for the wedding of the Empress’ niece, Princess Alice of Battenberg, to the King of Greece’s son, Prince Andrew. […] After the wedding the Grand Duke of Hesse and his little daughter Elisabeth went with the Imperial Family to their shooting box at Skierniewice in Poland. This stay was planned principally to give the Grand Duke a change. He led a solitary life at Darmstadt, having just been seperated from his first wife. Little Princess Elisabeth was a singularly captivating and beautiful child, adored by both her parents. She sicked soon after arriving at Skierniewice, having probably come to Poland with the bacillus of typhoid in her, and she died in a few days from a virulent form of ambulatory typhoid. ” Buxhoeveden, Sophie Karlovna, Baroness. (1929) The life and tragedy of Alexandra Feodorovna, Empress of Russia, a biography. London : Longmans, Green and co., pp. 99-100.
