Inspired by the Oregon coast, VAST attempts to capture the very specific feeling of standing on a cold beach and getting mad at the internet. Each song represents an imaginary place along the coast, blending processed field recordings with voices and instruments to blur the line between the physical and digital worlds. "It's all real life."

SNB011: Halloween Compilation No. 3: Rites

Hello! It's been awhile, but we're back this week with three(!) new tapes to make up for lost time. First up is the long-awaited physical release of our third Halloween compilation, Rites. Originally released in October 2016, these spooky tunes are now available on some very nice blood red cassettes. You can grab one right here:

Surprise! After a bit of a delay, our third Halloween compilation is live! You can stream and download the whole thing right now, and there are some nice tapes and a companion zine coming in the near future. We know it’s a bit late but hey, it’s never too early to get started on next Halloween.

We’re also putting on a Halloween Party at Kelly’s Olympian in Portland on the 27th with Cloud Ellyn, Pat Moon, Camp Counselors, and Ballet. It’s gonna be great.

SNB010: Seismograph - In Oblivion

“Oblivion is a garden.” This is the center of Portland, OR artist Jonathan Ioviero’s new album under the Seismograph moniker, In Oblivion. “It’s an empty space that you’re free to fill with whatever you want.” Each song on the album is a view of this idea at different angles, some good, some bad; all stemming from his fondness for solitude. “I’ve spent the last few years trying to be more aware of how my anxiety affects my life and how to better deal with that, and I think this album is a reflection of some of those thoughts.” Self-recorded between 2014 and 2016, featuring vocals from Kate Davis (Pat Moon) and Kyle J. Reigle (Cemeteries), In Oblivion is Ioviero’s warmest and most mindfully present album. The cold tonality of 2014’s Tundra Divine has been replaced with live drums, analog synths, and distorted guitars. This more direct songwriting led to songs that fall heavier and lighter than before, ranging from doom-inspired opener “Fell Ground” to the acoustic pop of “A Garden Shrine,” while the album still flows as a cohesive whole. SNB009: Cloud Ellyn - Stillness Reigns

Cloud Ellyn is the new loop-based project from Portland’s Jonathan Ioviero (Seismograph). Stillness Reigns was written and recorded over five weeks with a focus on simplicity and atmosphere, trying to think as little as possible.

SNB008: Cemeteries - Barrow

Barrow, Kyle Reigle’s third Cemeteries record is the result of factors both light and dark. Memories of the lakeside town where he spent his childhood summers, his recent move from the east coast wilderness to Oregon’s mountainous beauty, a witchcraft fascination and the argument that John Carpenter’s The Fog might be a better film than Halloween. Reigle has an unblushing love for old, grainy horror movies and while Barrow is a slow-burn love-letter to that obsession, it’s also an archive of his past and a journal of the life he currently possesses.

We’ll be co-releasing Barrow on July 28th with Track and Field Records.
