Psalm 5 by Ernesto Cardenal (translated by Robert Marquez)
Give ear to my words, O Lord
Hearken unto my moaning
Pay heed to my protest
For you are not a God friendly to dictators
neither are you a partisan of their politics
Nor are you influenced by their propaganda
Neither are you in league with the gangster
There is no sincerity in their speeches
nor in their press releases
They speak of peace in their speeches
while they increase their war production
They speak of peace at Peace Conferences
and secretly prepare for war
Their lying radios roar into the night
Their desks are strewn with criminal intentions and sinister reports
But you will deliver me from their plans
They speak through the mouth of the submachine gun
Their flashing tongues are bayonets…
Punish them, O Lord,
thwart them in their policies
confuse their memorandums
obstruct their programs.
At the hour of Alarm
you shall be with me
you shall be my refuge on the day of the Bomb
To ya who believe not in the lies of their commercial messages
nor in their publicity campaigns, nor in their political campaigns
you will give your blessing
With love do you encompass us
As with armor-plated tanks.
It is not about whether or not you love your neighbor, but how you do so: A Sermon
I preached this sermon at Broadway Presbyterian Church in NYC on Sunday, August 20th.
A Reading from the Gospel of Luke
Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” The lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, with all…
Charlottesville and Revelation
My church’s Pub Theology crew wanted to discuss the doctrine of Revelation. As is my custom, I created a worksheet to help start our conversation:
Working Definition: Revelation unveils the Unknown.
What is it: An experience, an event, an inspiration that moves one beyond the vision of the ordinary. Transcendant Transformative
What is it not: Revelation does not provide us with all that…
I was asked to write a statement of faith and because of my trust in a loving and creative Triune God, I re-wrote the ancient faith text, the Nicene Creed, to represent my ever-Reforming faith.
May the 4th be with you!
What a joy to read outside! "To imagine a world without prisons--to become a prison abolitionist--is to join a growing social justice initiative already in motion... It's to link eliminating prisons to revitalizing failing schools, ending homelessness, repairing our broken health care system, overcoming underemployment and unemployment, and ending an economic system based on predation and exploitation." #apeacefulworldispossible #broadenyourpoliticalimagination #broadenyourtheologicalimagination
Save Our Kids (5/2/17): Jordan Edwards, a 15-year old boy from the Dallas-area, was murdered by police on Saturday night, after leaving a party with his friend. He was unarmed and a passenger in the vehicle. The police shot arbitrarily into a moving vehicle of teenagers for some imagined threat that isn’t even flying within the officers’ own department. He is the youngest person killed by police this year. From NBC News:
“As the family struggles to deal with the pointless murder of their child they now have to face false claims of under-age drinking and fabrications about ‘aggressive’ behavior,” Merritt said in a statement.
Merritt said the car, filled with five teenage boys, was trying to maneuver out of a parking spot when a person “appearing to be an office” shouted profanity at them while shining a flashlight and “before the driver could respond the unidentified police officer fired multiple shots at the vehicle.”
“The Balch Springs PD has offered a familiar narrative in the absence of weapons or any indication of actual danger to the officer and any other person. The claim that the vehicle that Edwards occupied when he was shot ‘moved in an aggressive way toward an officer’ is transparently contrived in order to justify a defenseless act of murder,” he said.
Edwards was a straight “A” freshman at Mesquite High School and student-athlete who was loved by his family and peers alike, he said.”
I’m so weary y’all. They keep killing our babies and demanding that we resist non-violently. Who can sit idly by while our children are raised for slaughter in this country? Rest in power, Jordan Edwards. We fight for you now too. #farfromover
I still need to be reminded. #nomorewar #apeacefulworldispossible
The Prophet Isaiah of America Saith
In the days to come God’s justice will extend beyond the heavens encircling galaxies, borders, and flags All peoples and creatures shall recognize such love They will say, “Have you heard? The Not-Yet has become the Now-Is! People who once lived on the streets, now have roofs over their heads. Our bellies are full of food and joy. Prisons are empty! Oil is no longer necessary to survive!” God has given us all these beautiful resources and imparted in us how to use them. World peace agreements will be immediately signed with God overseeing that they are enacted Warheads, drones, tanks, and guns shall be melted into communion tables, tennis rackets, and new bridges. The people of nations will learn gardening skills, they’ll design new musical instruments, and neighbor will care outrageously for neighbor.
Some reminders about Dr. King before tomorrow:
- The United States Government was convicted in court of his murder.
- He spoke out against police brutality, capitalism, and war.
- He believed that white moderates were and are the greatest threat to civil rights, moreso than any hate group.
- He was arrested over 10 times.
- He was considered a dangerous radical by the majority of white Americans.
- He refused to condemn rioters, because “a riot is the language of the unheard.”
- Any white person who voted for Trump who tries to use MLK or his words as a rhtetorical tactic to justify their bigotry and complain about people protesting can personally come to my apartment in the next 24 hours for an ass-kicking.

Luke 1:46-55
And Mary sang, “My soul magnifies the Holy One, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for God has looked with favor on my lowliness. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is God’s name. God’s mercy is for all from generation to generation. God has shown strength with God’s arm; God has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. God has helped oppressed peoples, in remembrance of God’s mercy, according to the promise God made to our ancestors, to Abraham, Sarah, and to all descendants forever.”
