After a rough day Callie had found herself at Joe’s bar, a place that she hadn’t been in quite a while, with a couple of the other surgeons from the hospital. None the less, Callie knew that she needed this time to cool off from the stressful day she, and the work, had at work. Before heading over to the bar she’d texted her wife, Arizona, to confirm where she would be so that the blonde wouldn’t wait up worrying and have their child in bed by the time she’d arrived home.

At the bar Callie grabbed a table for the small group of surgeons and ordered the first rounds for everyone. “Well that was a doozy!” She had shouted since the place had become a bit noise and she wanted to be sure that she was heard. Not longer after, the noise began to die down again.

Maggie had been invited to go to Joe’s some of the other surgeons to hang out and talk about things. She had gladly accepted since spending time with her collegues was way better than spending it all by herself. As she arrived with Meredith and Alex, Callie was already there. The three walked up to the table and ordered something to drink. Both Meredith and Maggie shouted tequila, which the decided was a genetic thing as they both loved it.  After the noise softened away, Maggie offered a smile to Callie who was standing next to her. “So you guys come here often?”

She couldn’t help chuckling at the other woman’s rambling, not even judging, just genuinely amused. “Yeah, I don’t plan on dying old and dry. I’ll never be ugly, though. Look at this face.” She offered a wide, overly-enthusiastic smile for a brief second, letting it fall away almost as quickly as it appeared. “So I can’t do the boozy-drunk thing without another stint in rehab, but we could still go dancing or something. Arizona told me about this new restaurant downtown. We could hit that place up for dinner and then see where the night takes us?”

Maggie shook her head while she couldn’t help but laugh at Amelia’s comments. Amelia sure had a lot of confidence, or at least always pretended to have with these comical comments of her. “We could totally do some dancing. We should do the dancing. We’ll turn heads in that club and we will make everybody else assure that we won’t die old and dry and that we will never become ugly.” Maggie said. “And I shouldn’t be drinking tonight either if I am already rambling like this.” Her pager went off and Maggie grabbed it to see where she was needed. “I should get my thunder back right now. People won’t take me serious if I talk like this.”

Listening, Addison continued to sip on her drink. She knew if she didn’t pace herself, she would end up getting sick and that wasn’t fun for her or anyone around her. “I keep forgetting they changed the name again..” All that did was remind her of how many people she was losing around her, and how much she missed Mark Sloan right now. After being away for awhile, she knew emotions would be mixed among her return to Seattle.

With a small sigh, the redhead was relieved to know they weren’t here yet. She knew Nancy had e-mailed her but they didn’t have a flight when she last spoke to them. Addison could see Maggie’s curiosity peaking with each questions. Why wouldn’t it? She was curious as to what Maggie’s relationship was with everyone these days as well. Instead of trying to beat around the bush, she decided to just come out with it.  “I’m Derek’s ex-wife… Amelia lived and worked and lived with me until she moved here. She’s always been my little sister.” She said looking into her glass and swirling the rim with her finger.

“Derek’s ex-wife?” Maggie repeated surprised like she didn’t understood what Addison was saying. “God when you think you know somebody.” She said to herself. Maggie realised that although she had been in Seattle for about a year now, and she had been in the lives of Meredith and Derek, there was still so much she didn’t know about them. Maggie sighed and looked back at Addison as she smiled. “I think Amelia appreciates the fact that you are here. I think Derek would too. You seem like a good friend to them.” She spoke. “So I guess you are here for the funeral as well? How long has it been since you were last in Seattle?”

In the end, there is no glory in easy.                 No one remembers easy.                            They remember the blood & the bones                     & the long, agonizing fight to the top.

And that is how you become  legendary.

Accepting the drink, Addison gave the bartender a look and small gesture to add it all onto her growing tab. She still wasn’t sure who Maggie was, but, she didn’t think it would take her long to figure it out. At the extending of Maggie’s hand, Addison shook it with the chance to introduce herself as well. “Addison Montgomery. So, are you new to Seattle or has it just been that long since I was here last? Do you know if any other family has arrived?”

With a slight nod hearing that she was with Meredith and the kids, it made her feel a little better. At least she wasn’t alone, which meant Addison could relax a little as well.

Maggie nodded as a response to Addison’s first question. “Yes I am new here. I’ve been working at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for about a year now. I’m from Boston actually.” She said. It had been a emotional year for Maggie. She found her sister, her father and a whole bunch of other relatives almost a year ago and already she was saying goodbye to her brother-in-law. Although she didn’t knew Derek for that long, they got along pretty well and she missed him already. As she thought about Meredith, Amelia and the kids it would make Maggie even more upset. She wished she could do something for them to ease the pain. She even wished she could take all that pain so they didn’t have to go through something like that. It seemed so unfair, Meredith and Amelia losing another one of their loved ones and Maggie never lost anybody. She knew it wasn’t okay to think like that, but it did seem unfair and she even felt guilty trying to help them when she didn’t knew what it was like to lose someone you love.

“No not yet. I believe Amelia’s other sisters, Liz, Kathleen and  Nancy and their mother will arrive tomorrow early in the morning.” Wondering why Addison was so curious about Amelia and the other Shepherds made her even more curious about this woman’s relationship with them. “May I ask you who you are. I mean I know you are Addison, but what are you to Amelia?”

Addison just studied her for a moment before taking another sip of her drink. She figured she wasn’t going to be the most welcomed person here and it wouldn’t be a shock. She was wondering where his sisters were… Any of them. She knew she hadn’t seen this woman around before and just assumed she was probably another doctor since most of them that were at the funeral were doctors.

“No, I don’t think so. It’s been awhile since I was here… last.  I’m guessing you have no idea who I’m talking about though judging by the look on your face.”

image

“Actually I know Amelia.” Maggie spoke. “If you’re talking about Amelia Shepherd. We are -” She was unsure how to end that sentence. The whole Grey-Shepherd-Pierce family thing was hard to explain to strangers. “Friends.” She decided. It was always save to say friends. Still confused who she was talking to, Maggie offered the redheaded woman her hand. “Margaret Pierce. But call me Maggie. Everyone does.” Maggie smiled politely after the woman had announced her own name. “Uhm Amelia is at home with Meredith and the kids. I hope they catch up on some sleep, that’s probably why Amelia isn’t answering any calls. She will later I guess.” Still unknowingly about the relation Addison had with the Shepherds, Maggie offered her a drink. She believed she came off a little bit strong earlier when she snapped Addison out of her staring.

With a slight jump, the redhead came out of her own thoughts as she downed the rest of her scotch. She had no idea that she had even been staring at her. With a raised eyebrow, she responded to this unfamiliar face. There wasn’t much emotion in her voice as she talked, but a slight distant and blank feeling and tone could be heard. Emotions weren’t Addison’s strong suit and she was feeling rather numb at this point.

“Is there any chance you’ve seen Amelia? Or know where I can find her? She isn’t answering her phone.” As the bartender handed her another drink, she nodded and waited for the response.

image

Maggie had a surprised look upon her face. Was this another person who worked at the hospital and she just didn’t recognize her? She studied the woman’s face again, but she couldn’t think of any moment she should have met this woman. Actually she was pretty sure she would remember somebody who looks like that walking around the hospital. But she did ask about Amelia, not a random thing you would ask a stranger. “Excuse me miss, do I know you?” Maggie spoke as she felt a little awkward in this situation. She hoped she didn’t just asked a question with an obvious answer. She had already have a hard time calling Jo by her actual last name. She didn’t want to ask this question to somebody she had already been introduced too.

A bad dream didn’t even describe this. How could her ex-husband. the man she loved be gone? Would he be gone if she had stayed faithful? Tried a little harder? Not let him get away.. would this had been preventable? The redhead stayed silent and pondered her thoughts as she sipped a scotch.. on the rocks. Was she partly to blame for this tragedy? Obviously, she knew it wasn’t her fault but maybe if they had never divorced he would still be here, but then again he wouldn’t have been happy and found love with Meredith and had the two beautiful kids.

Addison sat there and continued to drink before looking over towards Maggie’s direction. This was a face she didn’t recognize. It had been awhile since she had visited Seattle so a new face shouldn’t be shocking, maybe she knew where Amelia was.

image

Maggie quickly drank the two tequila’s she had ordered and waved at the bartender again. This time she wasn’t going to get some alcohol, because she wanted to stay sober enough to drive back to Meredith’s place after dinner. Suddenly she caught the eyes of a woman staring at her. Maggie looked away a few times, but realised the redhead that was seated two spots away from her continued looking at her. “Excuse me?” Maggie spoke directly to the unfamiliar woman since there was nobody seated between the two of them. “Can I help you with something?” She continued as the other woman seemed to snap out of her gaze.

“Her name is Santana and she works with me in Ortho, we went out to dinner and she is from Southern Florida like me.”

“She sounds great. And you look happy. So I guess you two will continue seeing each other?”
