This may be a controversial opinion but I still don’t like Ruby from Sex Education. I think her character development was interesting this season but I can’t seem to move past her previous bullying. She bullies her own best friend, shaming her body and her clothes etc and calls Maeve a cock biter and a slag for years. She NEVER properly apologises for it. That kind of bullying has long lasting effects (which is why I also was never into Adam as a character either) and her having a difficult family life doesn’t absolve her shitty actions. Even her treatment of Otis when they’re together is pretty fucking awful. Sure she gets better and begins to accept who he is, but she is controlling, demeaning and harsh the entire time. She’s embarrassed by him, admits as much and acts as though their entire relationship is her doing him a favour and constantly reminding him that she’s out of his league. Yes she grows and yes Otis acts like a dick too, but the fact of the matter is that their entire relationship is predicated on her viewing herself as better than him and as her being the only person who has any right to make mistakes in that relationship. It’s unequal from the beginning and you also just cannot demand if and when people say “I love you”. It’s like Otis says, you have to come to it in your own time. I don’t think Ruby is all that great and am honestly shocked by people’s reactions to her character arc. I find characters like her, (the bitchy, hot, troubled popular girl) boring and tired and their redemption arcs unearned.
You can’t choose who you’re attracted to. You don’t engineer a relationship.
