Fanfic snippets, musings, reblogs of stuff I like, possible rants, stories, etc. Trans ally, agender ally, LGBTQIA+ ally, really.

Happy Sunday everyone!

First of all, thank you from the bottom of my heart to my four very talented friends who took the time to create something beautiful for me. I am so touched by all of these entries. You each brought your own unique and varied take to the prompts and it was really difficult to choose a favorite. You all did not make it easy! So much so, I almost brought in third party to make the decision for me. 😅

second post lets go

prying minds need to know again. anyway I was curious if ATHU Zelda was aware of or part of any trans/LGBT+ community, and what the general attitude towards trans issues in Hyrule is. Obviously it's going to vary based on region, but due to being a princess I've assumed that at least some people try and tone down any open transphobia around her so they don't get in trouble. Does she know of any trans women in history? Does she admire them?

She does know a few, not all of them admirable. I never hammered down details because it doesn’t impact the plot but they know a lot of history and denial is not wide spread so she’d know some.

Attitudes vary of course but generally speaking Hyrule is mostly chill towards lgbt officially. Which helps with general behaviour but there is a fair share that just don’t get it.

On one hand she gets more kickback because people genuinely believe that no princess means no curse so not believing she’s a girl is reassuring.

On the other hand, people do watch their tongue around generally. That’s where the neutral Highness this and Highness that come in.

Forgot.

She’s unfortunately not part of a community, her social circle is limited to a certain set. Again not hammered down but I’d say chances are she knows at least one or two other transgender people amid her acquaintances.

Chapter 26: Rain is now up!

Preview:

Link bowed. “Your lordship,” he said. “I am Sir Sori, Knight of Hyrule. Might I introduce my Lady wife, Lady Citra, daughter of Lord Whair, Baron of Atun.”

“Your lordship,” Zelda said, curtseying. “To answer your earlier query, we are not expected anywhere. We would be honored to be your guests, but we were hoping to see your beautiful town first.”

“No time, no time!” the Earl said. “You can visit tomorrow, and perhaps the sky will even be kind enough by then to be dry. But for now, we must get you inside, and dry, and changed for the ball!”

Zelda’s eyes widened. “You are hosting a ball this evening, your Lordship? And you would do us the honor of inviting us?”

“With the greatest pleasure,” the Earl said, smiling. “Especially now that you have hinted at such a curious story. A Sea Folk, knighted and married to the daughter of a baron? My other guests will be delighted of your company!”

“We gratefully accept, your lordship,” Zelda said.

Link smiled and bowed, taking the cue. The invitation was unarguably suspect by its suddenness and unexpectedness, but a ball would afford them a far better chance of hearing what was going on in Rain than walking about would have. He would simply need to remain on his guard.

Color for Marela and Saddiqah! (From @amelias-calamity-quintet ‘s fic MoaH)

A go at…trying…to just be a bit looser and not as perfectionist. It’s color for a sketch. Sketch isn’t perfect, color doesn’t need to be either. Did it succeed? ….sorta? Definitely got very into detailing a few things but it was also fun.

Could you maybe reblog this post if you think respecting trans peoples' names and identities is a basic right and not a political opinion?

No pressure. Just seeking some validation of my sentiment. Due to some. people

everybody go home the best tag on this post just dropped

A new champion draws the Master Sword, and the legend begins anew. But the door beneath the Temple of Time remains sealed, lest the Hero can open it once more. Link Sayre, Saddiqah El Amin, and Ambrose head west to Hyrule's forested neighbor, Farona, to seek out the first of the Sealing Stones. But perhaps their quest is not as secret as they'd like to believe.

It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.

There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!

I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.

He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?”

“NEVER!!” the teacher exclaimed. “You will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.” Then he paused. “So would you like to know why should care?”

Several us nodded.

He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. “You practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?” asked the teacher.

“Yeah,” replied Tim. “Almost every day.”

“Do you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?”

“Yeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.”

“But why?” asked the teacher. “Is there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?”

“No, of course not.”

“Then why lift weights?”

“Because it makes us stronger,” said Tim.

“Bingo!!” said the teacher. “It’s the same thing with calculus. You’re not here because you’re going to use calculus in your everyday life. You’re here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.”

And I’ve never forgotten that.

THIS.

When it’s taught right, learning math teaches you logic and how to organize your brain, how to take a problem one step at a time and make sure every step can bear weight before you move to the next one.  Most adults don’t need to know integrals, but goddamn if I don’t wish everyone making arguments on the internet understood geometric proofs.

Scientific concepts broaden our understanding of how the world is put together, which does not mean that most adults ever really understand how light is refracted through a lens or why spinning copper wire creates electricity–and they don’t need to.  But science classes in general are meant to teach the scientific method: how to make observations and use them to draw conclusions, how to test those conclusions, how to be wrong and grow stronger from it.

History isn’t about dates and names of battles, it’s about people, patterns, things we’ve tried before and ought to learn from.  It’s about how everything is linked, how changing one circumstance can lead to changes in fifty others, cascading infinitely.  Literature is about critical thinking, pattern recognition, learning to listen to what somebody is saying and decide what it means to you, how you feel about it, and what you want to do with it.

Some facts matter: every adult should know how to read a graph, how global warming works, some of the basic themes and symbols that crop up in every piece of fiction.  But ultimately, content is less important later in life than context.

The good thing is, students who learn the content are likely to pick up at least some of the context, some of the patterns of thinking, even if they don’t realize it.  (The unfortunate thing is how the current educational system prioritizes content so much that a lot of students, and a lot of adults, don’t see the point in learning either, and teachers are overworked and held to standardize test grading scales such that it’s hard for them to emphasize patterns of thinking over rote memorization, etc etc etc, but that is a whole different discussion.)

I would also add that giving as broad an education to as many as possible gives everyone the opportunity to follow a career that might use calculus. Or colour theory. Or electromagnetism. Or [insert specialism here]. If we gatekeep specialisms, those careers are only available for the ones who were privileged enough to have the background training. That’s why Classics as a degree subject is full of private school kids: it’s not offered in state education.

1 Year Back At Fic

Well, it's officially be a year since I came back to writing GoS and fic writing in general. That's kinda hard to believe. I had left fic writing to focus on original fiction for seven years. And then just. On a random Wednesday decided I wanted to get back to it. And we did. So how's the last year been?

  • Finished Goddess of Secrecy, taking the work from 300k to 408k words
  • Started getting back into Mark of a Hero. The omnibus for the series was at roughly 50k, and is now sitting at 1.57 mil words
  • And started uploading for MoaH again! We're already nearly halfway through book 2!
  • Got through the first round of edits for GoS, bringing it up again to 430k words
  • Set up an AO3 and began migrating for Wattpad (that anniversary is coming up this summer)
  • Hit 300k reads on GoS over on Wattpad! Woo!
  • Got my first 100 kudos work, which from what I've gathered of AO3 is a pretty big achievement, especially for year one
  • Started @expanding-hyrule and connecting with all you lovely folks
  • The reset from Wattpad meant I actually got to engage with other fan creators, and have gotten to read so many fantastic works. I've currently dropped 46 reviews for EH's story spotlights, and there are more to come for sure!
  • Two of my works got spotlighted in EH as well! GoS & MoaH (the only ones out of Wattpad jail until this week), which I'm still super thrilled about
  • Just started the importing process of Restoration Age! It is tempting me to write as well, but we will finish MoaH first
  • Participated in my first fandom events with EH's TBR Bingo and @loz-untold-myths's Light & Time event

It has been an amazing year. My mental health has never been better. I'm working on projects I love, I'm connecting with folks who have been nothing but supportive, and I'm getting to give back to a community that helped me build my craft. I cannot thank you all enough for giving me a chance when I popped up here out of nowhere about a year ago. I'm here for a while yet, there are more stories to tell.

And this is your reminder, it's never too late to start. Just do it! You never know where the road takes you, but it won't start until you start walking!

Epic Fantasy | Teen | AO3 | Ongoing

Synopsis: Hyrule is at peace, or so the Royal Family would have its people believe. Something is afoot in the kingdom, and someone needs to do something about it. Least likely would be Marksmen Link Sayre- a mercenary and monster hunter doing his best to get by. Until a job goes wrong, and he gets roped into the secret plans of Hyrule's princess. Now Link must play the part of the Hero to dive deeper into the mystery, and maybe stumble into a legend of his own.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This story feels so much like a Zelda game it’s hard to believe it’s not part of the franchise! Between unique dungeons, fun and exciting NPCs, and a party of heroes that are absolutely lovable, this story is definitely one to check out. Link is an animal-loving, capable, hilarious hero who is always trying to do his best for the people he loves, and Zelda is a powerful princess with something to prove. Definitely a worthy story to put on your TBR! - abbyz-elda
Mark of a Hero is an epic scale Zelda adventure that expands upon the lands, lore, and people of Hyrule and beyond. These lands outside of Hyrule have the definitive Zelda vibe to them, and they each have their own uniqueness to them as well. Exploring Hyrule and its neighbors gives many opportunities for the Zelda lore to be explored and expanded upon in ways that have been very fun and fascinating to learn and read about. The world of these books are also full of colorful and endearing characters that you can't help but fall in love with -- as well as a terrifying legion of villains you'll love to hate. I've had the amazing opportunity to be an early reader for the series, and I've immensely enjoyed every moment of it! I'm currently on book 4, and I can say that I've been excited to read each and every chapter and to see how the story twists and turns. Through the distinctive settings, the many charming characters, and the compelling plotlines, you can tell that Amelia has put much care into their research and their craft to write this story! - doubtfulloser
A very quintessential and uniquely engaging Legend of Zelda story, Mark of a Hero feels like it is in fact part of the franchise: - it is set in a very vast and detailed world, absolutely full of interesting and unique background and tertiary characters; - it has a really, really cool Link in Link Sayre, mercenary and unwitting pretend hero who we all expect really is not pretend at all; - it has an amazing take on the Princess Zelda, the role, the royal dynamics, and how the one we're following in this story is responding to the challenges it all creates; - it has boss fights and puzzles, and will make you think that this could 100% be a really cool game to play; - it has amazing secondary characters, from a gossipy Zora to a completely ordinary old man, the supporting cast is just an absolute delight. This story is in progress, and it is already epic even though there is a lot left to come. A long read for sure, but it could easily become your comfort fic for a nice long while. - Karama9
