Hiya! :) you told a story in your episode of the Meala podcast about how you got an internship right out of college. Do you have any tips about applying for an internship at an animation studio? Next year is my final year of studying animation in Ireland, and I'm both curious and mortified about how to ask for one (╥﹏╥)

Hey there! For my internship the studio I worked for were scouting for graduates they could train and employ for a show they were about to start producing. So they specifically came to my college to interview students and I got hired after they interviewed me and assessed my portfolio.

My internship lasted about 3 months (it's important that I also include that this was unpaid and mostly involved training, I did not produce work for any of their shows). All of the interns ended up being hired at the end of the 3 months, I was hired as a BG artist and after that I was paid monthly for the duration of my contract.

In terms of contacting studios, really don't be afraid to send them a short email plus your portfolio/website/examples of your work and ask if they take on interns. I would be careful of unpaid vs paid internships, or if you feel they might be taking advantage of new graduates. For example, if they're making you produce work for a show and aren't paying you as opposed to training, because this can happen. So just keep that in mind. If you're unsure maybe mention it to your lecturers or friends and see what they think. But honestly just shoot them an email, the worst they can say is no or not reply. And best of luck in your final year!!
